Off-Season Trivia, round 1................

Post by mlittle » Sun Oct 28, 2007 12:12 pm

Here are the first set of off-season trivia questions to peruse, argue, debate and, hopefully, answer......be forewarned, everyone; not all the trivia questions will relate to auto racing. As I am a major fan of science-fiction, rest assured that some of the trivia questions over the off-season will relate to that topic.......hopefully, we'll all have a blast this off-season and I welcome all trivia challengers....... :) 8) 8)

as with the off-season trivia in the NA motorsports section, please PM your answers to me for this first set of questions by midnight US time, 11 November 2007...............

Anyway, good luck to all and let the festivities begin!      :)

(1)In the history of "the Greatest Spectacle in Racing", the Indianapolis 500, 12 Formula 1 world champions have crossed the Atlantic to race at the Brickyard....for one point, name at least five of them.(Name all 12 for 5 points)

(2-4)In the "Golden Era" of North American motorsports, it was common for drivers like A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones and others to race in multiple disciplines(sprint-cars, open-wheelers, sportscars, stock cars, etc). For one point, name the driver who has won the following events.......
2--Indy 500, Daytona 500, the 24 Hours of LeMans and the 24 Hours of Daytona
3--Indy 500, Daytona 500, the 1978 F1 championship and the 24 Hours of Daytona
4--Indy 500, the 24 Hours of LeMans, the Grand Prix of Monaco and 2 F1 championships

(5)In the history of the Indy 500, five women have competed in the event. For one point, name at least one. (For three points, name all five of them.)

(6-10)The next five questions are simple........I'll mention a track corner.......for one point each, name the track that corner's located at.
6--Big Bend Corner
7--the Keyhole
8--Casino Hairpin
9--the Peraltada
10--Subida do Logo

And now the bonus question...........................(two points for either character, five points for both)
The following two fictional characters both share the same three initials.......H. S. H. Here are a couple of clues as to their identity:
1--both are naval officers set during different periods of time(one during the Napoleonic Wars, the other centuries in the future)
2--both are said to possess "the Nelson touch", the ability to inspire and lead those around them and to bring out the best in them(the character trait is named for legendary British naval officer Horatio, Lord Nelson)
3--their respective authors are C.S. Forester and David Weber
4--during the course of their respective careers, both of them lost an eye and an arm in battle

Who are they?

Anyway, good luck!!!!  8) 8) :burnout: :burnout: :drive:

Good questions mlittle. Though I fear I will need more than luck to get very far.
I am not too sure about question 1. Does this mean they hve to have been Formula 1 world champions before they drove at the Indy 500?

Clarification on question no. 1, jacfan......no, they do not have to have been F1 champions before they competed at the Brickyard; several competed at Indy before winning their respective WDC's; others competed after winning their respective WDC's and so forth(ironically, for the first decade or so of the Formula 1 world championship, the Indianapolis 500 was on the F1 calendar, the first and only oval-track race to be on the F1 schedule)

The reason that I Knew Hornblower is because it's a TV series that is being played on TV at the moment. I didn't know about the old film.

I'm glad that I'm not the only person to take part in this quizz.

Don't sweat it; I couldn't find a screenshot from the TV mini-series so I tried to find one of the film....

I'm just glad I extended the deadline 2 days further; both GhoGho and cmlean got their answers in between the old deadline and the extension......

Now if we could just get Julian, jacfan and some of the other regulars to chip in........oh wait, jacfan's sent her answers for the second round in, so that makes four..... 8)
