Shane Dye

Post by jacfan » Mon Jun 26, 2006 6:10 pm

Champion jockey Shane Dye remains in a coma in a Hong Kong hospital after undergoing brain surgery on last night.

Dye, 39, suffered severe head injuries in a race fall at Sha Tin and was found to have bleeding around his brain on arrival at Hong Kong's Prince Of Wales hospital.

Horse racing sources in Hong Kong said the jockey was in an induced coma, but was stable.
What a terrible thing to happen. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shane and his family friends.

He is still in hospital. Doctors had to perform surgery to relieve pressure on the brain. Apparently he is still getting lots of bad headaches but he is determined to get back to racing in a few months.
He suffered serious head injuries in the fall and doctors found bleeding on his brain.

He now has a 12cm wound at the top of his skull where doctors operated to relieve the pressure on his brain.

Dye has a stress fracture in his back, a collapsed lung and abrasions all over his body.

He is on a morphine drip to relieve the pain, a saline drip and has to use an oxygen mask to help him breathe.

He can't eat any solid foods, drops in and out of sleep every few minutes and regularly wakes coughing, spitting and vomiting blood.

A nurse watches over him 24 hours a day in the high dependence unit and a doctor is just seconds away in case of an emergency.
That is a quote from the Herald Sun on July 1.

I am beginning to build up a picture of you in my mind. Body obviously well worn from being stabbed in chest... fallen on by horse... with a spanish dancer attached to one ankle. Plays poker, drives really really fast... probably wrestles crocodiles and other marine creatures, while bringing up three kids and suffering the wrath of the ex.    Forgot to mention better looking than Paul "dot com" Phillips.

Shane Dye had his first time back in the saddle today. He admitted to being slightly nervous but said he was pleased to be back. He won't be racing at this stage as he is yet to get clearance from his doctors.
