Sebring Test Day 1.......

Post by mlittle » Tue Jan 23, 2007 2:07 pm

If there is one satisfying sound during the winter chill, it is the '...vrooomm....' of race engines being run in anger during the day; such was the case at Sebring for the first of three tests as the American LeMans Series began its' 2007 Wheels Down Winter Test under clear skies. As expected, some of the fastest times were set by the LMP-2 teams, including Penske Racing, whose Porsche RS Spyders set the fastest times of the session. Close behind was another Porsche RS Spyder from Dyson Racing; meanwhile, in the GT2 category, it was the squad from Flying Lizard Motorsports who posted the fastest time in a 2007-spec Porsche 997 RSR. Below are the top five times from the two sessions...........

Session #1 results..........
1} Fernandez Racing, Lola B05/40-Acura, 1:50.156 sec(120.919 mph), LMP-2
2} Intersport Racing, Lola B05/40-AER, 1:52.231 sec(118.864 mph), LMP-2

ALMS to run on E10 fuel in 2007.........

Post by mlittle » Thu Feb 08, 2007 10:06 am

American LeMans Series officials and officials with the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council(EPIC) confirmed today that, beginning with the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring in mid-March, the ALMS will begin using race fuels that are a 90-10 mix of gasoline/ethanol(the lone exception being Audi, which will continue to use high-grade racing diesel in its' Audi R10) in all four classes(LMP-1, LMP-2, GT-1, GT-2). Here are some quotes from those involved...........

Scott Atherton, President, American LeMans Series:
At a time when alternative fuel initiatives are in the daily headlines, we could not be more pleased to unite with an organization such as EPICto aid in spreading the awareness of renewable energy and the benefits of ethanol in the most demanding environment in motorsports: American Le Mans sportscar racing.
Tom Slunecka, Executive Director, Ethanol Promotion and Information Council:
We are proud to be associated with one of the fastest grwoing brands of motorsports in North America. With television broadcasts in the United States, Latin America and Europe, this partnership offers an incredible platform to market the performance and environmental benefits of ethanol, in a variety of engine types from different manufacturers. This will also be the first time that ethanol-enriched fuel will be used in a 12-hour endurance race.
With today's announcement, the American LeMans Series becomes the second major racing series to use ethanol in its' fuels, following the Indy Racing League's decision to use ethanol fuels beginning in 2006.

Monday Sebring News

Post by mlittle » Tue Mar 13, 2007 11:02 am

There's an old saying..............C'est la plus change, c'est la plus meme.. Roughly translated, it means...............The more things change, the more things stay the same.. Case in point..........Audi set the fastest time in Monday practice for Saturday's Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring.

Indeed, Audi Sport NA with its' two Audi R10 TDI LMP-1's led the timing charts, with the trio of Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Rinaldo 'Dindo' Capello setting the pace at 1:45.177 sec.; their sister car, piloted by Emanuele Pirro, Marco Werner and Frank Biela were close behind. While the 2007 R10 is Audi's next-generation prototype, Kristensen had this to say..........
Visibly you can't see a difference (between this year's and last year's car). But because of the diesel engine and to gewt it drivable, there have been changes to the electronics and taking feedback from the drivers and getting to know the feedback of the different circuit charcteristics. We've improved things in terms of springs and rollbars and the car's closer to its' limits (now).
Meanwhile, over in the LMP-2 category, the top 6 times were all under the reocrd set last year by Penske Racing's Porsche RS Spyder; the fastest times were set by Andy Wallace, Butch Leitzinger and Andy Lally in a Dyson Racing Porsche RS Spyder at 1:46.703 sec; right on their heels, though, was the Andretti-Green Racing Acura ARX-01 entry piloted by Bryan Herta, Marino Franchitti and Tony Kanaan at 1:47.065 sec.

In GT-1 it appears the battle btwn. the mother country(Aston Martin) and the colonies(Chev. Corvette C-6R) with less than 4/10ths' separating the three entrants(two from Corvette Racing and the one DBR9 from Team Modena), while in GT-2 it was a 1-2-3 day for the Ferrari 430GT, with the Houston, Tx.-based Risi Competizione squad leading the way.

Audis' on point at Sebring..............

Post by mlittle » Sat Mar 17, 2007 9:50 am

The field is set for the 55th running of the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, and......surprise, surprise, or maybe, to no one's surprise, a pair of Audi R10's will grace the front row in the LMP-1 category, led by veteran Audi works pilot Marco Werner, who broke the existing class record with a qual. run of 1:44.972 sec.; his fellow Audi pilot Dindo Capello, placed the other R10 in second w/a time of 1:45.326 sec.

In the LMP-2 category, Penske Racing set the fastest time w/Timo Bernhard at 1:46.046 sec.; it would not have sufficed had it not been for a mistake from fellow Penske driver Sascha Maasen, who lost his fastest time when track officials noticed his transponder light was off(IMSA, the series' sanctioning body, requires all drivers to use a distinct transponder light visible on the front of the car). Maasen's mistake, slight as it was, cost him, as his next-fastest time placed his team 9th for the race.

"A tight formation" could well describe the GT-1 category, as both Corvette C-6Rs' and the Aston Martin DBR9 of Team Modena qualified P13-P15; Jan Magnussen in the #3 Compuware C-6R set the fastest time at 1:57.061 sec.; teammate Oliver Gavin will start outside of Magnussen, while Modena's Antonio Garcia will sit just behind Magnussen.

Finally, in the GT-2 category, Risi Competizione's Jaime Melo set the fastest time at a 2:02.548 sec in a Ferrari 430GT, while the fastest Porsche 911 GT3 came from ALMS debutants Rahal-Letterman Racing and Ralf Kelleners, who'll start third in class(23rd overall) at 2:04.001 sec.

Sebring Update...........

Post by mlittle » Sun Mar 18, 2007 7:13 am

From a somewhat warm and sunny Sebring, here is the half-race update of the 55th Mobil 1 12 Hrs. of Sebring................

~~Strong running from the Audis'.........for most of the race thus far, it has been the Audi R10 of Audi Sport North America and Marco Werner who's led the race; meanwhile, the second Audi R10 has just had some awkward luck, especially going in/out of pitlane(2 pit lane violations so far, a new dashboard, new batteries, new starter motor/alternator, etc......  )

~~Strong Acura running...............when Werner and the Audi R10 TDI wasn't leading, one of the new Acura entries from Andretti-Green Racing led twice, as was Fernandez Racing's Lola/Acura in LMP-2

~~Which Corvette team will win? Both Corvette C-6R's have dominated so far, while the privateer Aston Martin DBR9 of Team Modena has kept pace over in GT-1

~~Finally, in GT-2, the Ferrari 430GT's of Risi Competizione and Flying Lizard Mtrspts. have exchanged the lead several times, while Tafel Racing has held onto third for a while now
