Honda to enter ALMS action in 2007

Post by mlittle » Thu Apr 13, 2006 10:36 am

What was one of the year's biggest rumors came true today on the first day of the 2006 New York Auto Show, as American Honda Motor Co. announced that, starting in 2007, its' motorsports division, Honda Performance Development(currently Division; the name change takes full effect in June 2006), will begin running Acura-badged LMP-2's in American LeMans Series competition. The engines, to be build at HPD's Santa Clarita, Ca. HQ's, will be mated to both Lola B05/40 and Courage C65 chassis'. Here are some quotes from the principles involved.....

Scott Atherton, President/CEO, American LeMans Series:
The American LeMans Series has always featured factory involvement from the most prestigious collection of auto manufacturers in the world. Today, it is with great pride that we welcome Acura. While there are still some details to be worked out, Acura's involvement in the American LeMans Series will have nothing but positive repercussions in the seasons to come. Acura has made a commitment to us, and we are committed to seeing that Acura receives the same return on its' investment as our other teams and manufacturers.
John Mendel, Senior VP-Honda Automobile Operations:
As Acura marks its' 20-year anniversary, I can't think of a better racing series to showcase our technology and performance than the American LeMans Series. Our entry as a full factory team in the series will accurately reflect Acura's position as a leader in automotive performance and technology, and provide us with an arena to compete against other manufacturers in endurance sports car racing.
Robert Clarke, President-Honda Performance Development:
We're looking forward with great anticipation to entering the American LeMans Series. In addition to returning Acura to the international racing stage against other innovative automotive manufacturers, it allows us to continue growing HPD into a world-class performance company.
According to all three, testing of the 3.4-liter turbo V8 will begin, with additional engine/chassis testing alongside. Teams and drivers will be announced in the near future; speculation has it that HPD's former works teams in the Indy Racing League, Andretti-Green Racing and Rahal-Letterman Racing being the teams considered by Honda....(rumor has it that Rahal-Letterman is currently at the top of the list)...

So let's see......Acura, Lexus, BMW, Audi, Mazda, Chevrolet, Aston-Martin, Porsche, Ferrari and Panoz. All-in-all, an impressive list of marques' w/in the ALMS.

McNish, Capello to race for Audi for 3-race stretch

Post by mlittle » Thu Apr 20, 2006 2:49 am

Audi Sport NA announced yesterday that veteran Audi works drivers Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello, who partnered 4-time Sebring(and 7-time 24-Hr. LeMans) champion Tom Kristensen, will race one of the team's Audi R8's for a three-race stretch in the American LeMans Series, beginning w/the upcoming round in Houston, and continuing through both Mid-Ohio and Lime Rock. It won't be as easy, though, as one might think, as both ACO(Automobile Club 'Ouest--the sanctioning body for the 24 hrs. of LeMans) and IMSA(the sanctioning body for the ALMS) have added restrictions to the Audi R8' that American based Champion Racing will use. Those restrictions are.....1: 35 kgs. ballast(the R8's will weigh 935 kgs instead of 900 kgs), and 2: the air intakes for the Audi R8 engines will be seven mm smaller than in previous yrs.

Post by mlittle » Fri May 12, 2006 4:09 pm

Qualifying for the 2006 Lone Star Grand Prix was held this afternoon, and it was a hard-fought session......in the end, it was the Dyson Racing Lola of James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger who took the LMP-1(and overall) pole, but it was a close fight for them. However, it wasn't the Audi R8's of Champion Racing that nearly stole the overall P1.....it was the Penske Mtrspts. Another Audi win in ALMS

Post by mlittle » Sun May 14, 2006 4:49 pm

Somehow, someway, there's always an Audi at the head of the leaderboard overall; for the 48th time since its' introduction to American LeMans Series action, the venerable Audi R8 won, this time w/Allan McNish and Rinaldo "Dindo" Capello at the wheel in LMP-1, cruising to an easy LMP-1 win as the two Dyson Racing Lola/AER's were felled by mechanical woes.

In the LMP-2 class, the Intersport Racing duo of Clint Field and Liz Halliday won their second race of the year, outlasting both Penske Porsche RS Spyders; for Halliday, the win was her 5th in ALMS competition, tying her with Milka Duno for most wins by a female driver in series history.

Meanwhile, in the GT-1 category, it was another day at the office for Corvette Racing as the duo of Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta edged out their Corvette teammates of Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell; with the win, Beretta and Gavin tied sportscar ace Karl Wendlinger for most wins in ALMS history, with 11 wins total.

Finally, over in what is turning into the most competitive class in the ALMS(GT-2), it was the Alex Job Racing Porsche duo of Mike Rockenfeller and Klaus Graf who outlasted the Flying Lizard Porsche of Johannes van Overbeek and Wolf Henzler. Hometown competitors Risi Competizione rounded out of podium w/Mika Salo and Jaime Melo.

Intersport looks to continue winning way at Mid-Ohio

Post by mlittle » Thu May 18, 2006 5:11 pm

Q: When someone asks you, who's "Ohio's favorite son?", who comes to mind?

A: Depends.......in AOWR, that honor would go to 3-time CART champion/1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal, who hails from New Albany, Ohio. If you're referring to sportscar racing, then the honor goes to Marion, Ohio's own, Clint Field.

For Intersport Racing, the next round of the 2006 American LeMans Series amounts to a "home race" for the team, as they're based in Columbus, Ohio, less than an hour's drive from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Of course, the season's already turned into a delight for the team, with wins in the 54th annual Mobil 1 12 Hrs. of Sebring and last weekend's win in the inaugural Lone Star Grand Prix of Houston. For the winningest driver in ALMS LMP-2 competition(14 wins as of Houston), its' another chance to showcase how good the team is......
It's going to be really nice to have all of our friends and family at the track. We always run strong at Mid-Ohio and we look forward to having another good race at the track.
Besides his 14 wins in LMP-2, Field also has one LMP-2 class victory at the 24 Hrs. of LeMans(from 2004), and last year, at the age of 20, became the youngest driver to win an overall class championship in ALMS/IMSA competition.

In addition to Field, Intersport Racing also has one of NA motorsports' rising young talents in California-native Liz Halliday. Her 2nd-place overall finish at the 12 Hrs. of Sebring was the highest-ever for a female driver in ALMS competition, and her 5 LMP-2 wins are the most for any female driver since Milka Duno. When asked about the team's prospects for Mid-Ohio, she replied......
We want to build on the momentum generated at Sebring and Houston, and Mid-Ohio would be a great place for us to do it given how special it is to our team. We know we'll have a lot of people rooting for us, and we'll hopefully respond with our best effort of the season.
So far this year, Intersport Racing leads in the LMP-2 team standings, winning at both Sebring and Houston over the works Porsche Spyders' of Penske Motorsports. As to their chances at Mid-Ohio, which was recently resurfaced, Field had this to say......
It will be nice to have the increased grip that comes with a new racing surface. I'm hoping it will suit our car and am really looking forward to seeing and driving it.
Round three of the 2006 American LeMans Series season, at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, is scheduled for the weekend of May 19-21, 2006. The race itself is set for 1 PM US EDT on CBS Sports.

Historic Day at Mid-Ohio

Post by mlittle » Mon May 22, 2006 5:59 pm

Twice in the history of the American LeMans Series has an LMP-2 entry won the overall race win.......the first to do so was the Dyson Racing entry of Butch Leitzinger/James Weaver at Infineon Raceway in July 2003. Today saw the second time it's happened, as Penske Motorsports' Porsche RS Spyder, driven by Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard won the overall win. In addition to that, the team's sister RS Spyder, piloted by Sascha Maasen and Lucas Luhr, finished 2nd overall, the first time 2 LMP-2 entries have ever finished 1-2 overall. Here are the top-3 results from each class at Mid-Ohio.....

LMP-1/1st}Allan McNish, Rinaldo Capello(#2 Audi Sport Audi R8 ), 3rd overall
LMP-1/2nd}Butch Leitzinger, James Weaver(#16 Thetford/Norcold Lola B06/10-AER), 4th overall

Next stop for the 2006 American LeMans Series........Lime Rock Park, for the New England Grand Prix, set for the weekend of June 30-July 1. However, for many of the ALMS regulars, it is off to the Sarthe circuit in LeMans, France, for the 2006 running of one of the greatest sports-car endurance races, the 24 Hours of LeMans.

Grand Old Lady goes out in style.......

Post by mlittle » Sun Jul 02, 2006 5:03 pm

In 2000, Audi Sport introduced what many in the ALMS paddock referred to as "the Grand Old Lady", the Audi R8, and after six+ years and 48 overall wins in ALMS action, the Grand Old Lady went out in style, winning Saturday's New England Grand Prix with Rinaldo 'Dindo' Capello and Allan MicNish driving. McNish, who was in the car at the end of the race, was unabasheldy emotional in victory lane.....
I'm not an emotional person; my wife can attest to that. But I had tears in my eyes coming out of the last corner, and I tapped the hood of the R8 because she's done aything I ever asked of her; she even saved my life at LeMans. We're looking forward to the R10 TDI but it's still hard to say goodbye because she has been a good part of my career. It was the fitting end the R8 deserved.
McNish took the overall lead from the Porsche RS Spyder opf Romain Dumas with around 30 minutes left, using as Aston Martin DBR9 to slignshot around the final corner leading onto the frontstraight.

Speaking of the RS Spyder, Penske Mtrspts. notched their second cons. ALMS win, finishing 2nd overall(and 1st in LMP-2) with Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhart at the wheel. Their sister car, driven by Sascha Maasen and Lucas Luhr, finished 2nd in class, while the Intersport Racing Lola/AER of Liz Halliday and Clint Field notched third in class.

Meanwhile, it was all smiles in the Aston Martin Racing paddock, as the DBR9 of Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin ended the 12-race winning streak of the Corvette C-6R, taking the class honors in GT-1 over the Corvette C-6R of Johnny O'Connell and Ron Fellows.

Finally, in the GT-2 class, Petersen/White Lightning, using a Porsche Carrera borrowed from a Porsche Supercup team, still managed to win the GT-2 victory(their primary 911 GT3 was damaged at LeMans in the 24 Hours...) with Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmeister in the car. Finishing second was the Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 of Johannes van Overbeek and Wolf Henzler, while Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand finished third in a BMW M3.

Next up for the American LeMans Series.........the series makes its' first-ever visit to the Beehive State, Utah and the 4.5-mile Miller Motorsports Park for the Grand Prix of Utah, July 13-15, 2006...........

Post by mlittle » Tue Jul 25, 2006 9:09 am

With round 6 of the 2006 American LeMans Series season now in the rear-view, let's open the notebook and see what happened.......

~~in LMP-1, the new Audi R10 V12 turbo diesel is 3-for-3, as Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello wrung the R10 for all it was worth, holding off their Audi Sport NA teammates Frank Biela and Emmanuele Pirro to win their fourth race of the season, all but locking up the LMP-1 title with four rounds to go.
~~in LMP-2, Liz Halliday became the winningest female driver in ALMS history, as reliability problems shelved both Penske Porsche Spyders, allowing her and fellow co-drivers Clint and Jon Field to win in LMP-2; Halliday now has 6 class victories, passing Milka Duno, who now sits second w/5 wins
~~the seesaw battle btwn. the Corvette C-6R and Aston Martin DBR9s' continued, with the C-6R winning, as Olivier Beretta and Olvier Gavin held off several challneges from Corvette Racing teammates Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell and Aston Martin Racing's Tomas Enge and Darren Turner to win their 4th GT-1 class victory of the year
