Recap of ALMS action at America's Spa.....

Post by mlittle » Tue Aug 22, 2006 1:50 pm

After a month's absence, the American LeMans Series returned to the track for round 7, the Road America Generac 500, and, as has been expected, there was plenty of action on the track, starting in the LMP-1 class.......

~~in one of the closest finishes in the history of the LMP-1 category, it was another Audi 1-2 as Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela held off teammates Allan McNish and Rinnldo 'Dindo' Capello and the Dyson Racing duo of Butch Leitzinger and James Weaver. LMP-1 results:
1=E. Pirro, F. Biela....................#2 Audi Sport NA(Audi R10 TDI)
2=A. McNish, R. Capello.............#1 Audi Sport NA(Audi R10 TDI)
3=B. Leitzinger, J. Weaver..........#16 Thetford/Norcold(Lola B06/10-AER)

~~there is a new leader in the LMP-2 class, as Sascha Maasen, now driving with Timo Bernhard, led a Penske Porsche 1-2; rounding out the podium were the privateers of Intersport Racing, as the trio of Liz Halliday, Clint Field and Jon Field finished third. Maasen now leads Halliday and C. Field by 2 points in the class; LMP-2 results:
1=S. Maasen, T. Bernhard.................#6 DHL Global Mail(Porsche RS Spyder)
2=R. Dumas, L. Luhr.........................#7 DHL Global Mail(Porsche RS Spyder)
3=L. Halliday, C. Field, J. Field............#37 Very Berry Exotics/Klein Tools(Lola B05/40-AER)

~~the battle of the mother country v. the former colonies(a/k/a Aston Martin Racing vs. Corvette Racing) continues in the GT-1 category, with the mighty C-6R carrying the day with drivers Johnny O'Connell and Ron Fellows taking class honors; a late tire change for the AMR #007 of Darren Turner and Tomas Enge cost them a certain win. GT-1 results:
1=R. Fellows, J. O'Connell...................#10 Compuware(Chevrolet Corvette C-6R)
2=O. Gavin, O. Beretta.......................#12 Compuware(Chevrolet Corvette C-6R)
3=T. Enge, D. Turner..........................#007 Aston Martin Racing(Aston Martin DBR9)

~~finally, in the GT-2 class, the Petersen/White Lightning Porsche 911 GT3 of Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long got a much-needed victory, beating a large field of competitors, especially the Team PTG BMW E46/M3 of works BMW-North America racers Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand. GT-2 results:
1=P. Long, J. Bergmeister..................#13 Flying Lizard(Porsche 911 GT3)
2=B. Auberlen, J. Hand......................#18 Team PTG(BMW E46/M3)
3=M. Rockenfeller, M. Tiemann...........#14 Bell Micro(Porsche 911 GT3)

Next up for the American LeMans Series..........the always exciting and challenging Mosport circuit in Ontario, set for the weekend of 1-3 Sept. 2006

2007 Acura ALMS entries turn first laps......

Post by mlittle » Fri Sep 01, 2006 5:39 am

Under sunny skies and calm winds, Honda Performance Development began testing its' 2007-spec Acura at the Firebird-East circuit near Phoenix, as Aguri-Fernandez Racing owner(and Rolex Sports Car Series driver) Adrian Fernandez turned over 200 laps on the 1.2-mile circuit; afterwards, he commented,
I can't remember a first test with a brand-new package ever going this well. My first laps in the car were unbelieveable--the sound of the engine, the effortless steering, the brakes. It was a tremendous experience; the car is fast. It felt great from the start, and I was amazed at how quickly we were able to make strides to continually get the car better and better.
In addition, officials from HPD were present; after the day's testing, HPD president Robert Clarke was asked whether HPD was pleased with how things went. Clarke responded,
This test is the first step in the fulfillment of the project that will make Honda Performance Development a full-fledged, self-sufficient research and development company. Our first step was to acquire the infrastructure and facilities necessary to support this effort, and the second was to actually our ALMS engine. We've had the engine on the dynamometer for the past three months, so we expected it to perform reliably, although we weren't expecting 100 percent reliability once the engine and chassis package were combined. To see a car on the race track with an engine completely designed and developed by HPD is a proud and truly historic moment for our company.
Testing is slated to continue throughout the month of September at various tracks around North America; in addition to Aguri-Fernandez Racing, which will run using Lola-built B05/40 chassis', Andretti-Green Racing and Highcroft Racing will also utilize HPD-engines mated to Courage LC75 chassis. All three teams will debut their new rides at next year's 55th running of the prestigious Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring in the LMP-2 class.

Meira, Gidley to drive for Highcroft at Petit Le Mans

Post by mlittle » Sat Sep 23, 2006 4:55 pm

Although Highcroft Racing is not scheduled to run with HPD(Honda Performance Development) until 2007 in the LMP-2 class, its' LMP-1 program has tapped into HPD's driver talent pool, bringing aboard IRL IndyCar driver Vitor Meira and open-wheel "supersub" Memo Gidley for next week's 1000-mile/10-hour Petit Le Mans race; both will share driving duties w/driver-owner Duncan Dayton.
