Watkins Glen events in possible jeopardy

Post by mlittle » Fri Jun 02, 2006 12:51 pm

Practice sessions today for the upcoming Rolex Sports Car Series event, the Sahlen's 6 Hours of the Glen, were cancelled today, according to Grand American officials. At issue, according to the press release, is the contract between Watkins Glen International Raceway and the Indy Racing League, which is also running this weekend. Part of their contract stipulates that, under the U.S. Master Tobacco Settlement, signed back in the late 1990's, no individuals under the age of 18 may compete at any venue where tobacco sponsorship is present. Due to the fact that Roger Penske's team, sponsored by Marlboro(i.e. Marlboro-Team Penske) is an IndyCar Series team, WGI had informed Krohn Racing that 17yo Colin Braun, currently 6th in the Daytona Prototype points stdgs, would be prohibited from competing due to the Settlement. As a response, both Braun and Krohn Racing have filed injunctions agst. both the IRL and WGI, asking a New York state judge to void the contract btwn. the two. As Grand-Am President Roger Edmondson pointed out in the release,
It is important to point out that Krohn Racing and Colin Braun are well within their rights to take this action. It is also unfortunate that the rest of our (Rolex) teams must wait until Friday for a decision on the status of their event. However, we must respect both the decision of the court as well as our race promoter, and are prepared to alter our schedule if neccessary.
A decision on the injunction is expected from NY State Supreme Ct. Judge Judith O'Shea, who is expected to issue a ruling sometime tomorrow. Earlier this year, ironically, during the Rolex weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Braun was also prohibited from competing due to the settlement.

The Sahlen's 6 Hours of the Glen will run as scheduled Saturday as the injunction sought by Krohn Racing(see above) was denied by NYSt. Supreme Ct. Judge Judith O'Shea. The main result was this will be veteran sportscar driver Boris Said will substitute for Colin Braun in the race; the team will also decide on a replacement for Braun when the series travels to Infineon Raceway later this year; Braun will continue to drive for the team at all other Rolex Series events.

Sweet Revenge at the Glen

Post by mlittle » Mon Jun 05, 2006 12:55 am

After having to sit out driver Colin Braun this weekend at Watkins Glen, what did Krohn Racing do? Simple.....they brought in veteran sportscar driver Boris Said to co-pilot the #76 Krohn Racing Ford/Riley along with Jorg Bergmeister, and they went on to win a hard-fought Sahlen's 6 Hours of the Glen. In a race which saw 20 lead changes among 9 Daytona Prototypes and 12 drivers, they managed to hold off all comers to win by 3.5-secs. over the #99 Gainsco entry of Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney.
Here are the top-5 from the Daytona Prototype class.............

DP-1}Jorg Bergmeister, Boris Said............................#76 Krohn Racing Ford/Riley
DP-2}Jon Fogarty, Alex Gurney, Bob Stallings............#99 Gainsco Insurance Pontiac/Riley
DP-3}Wayne Taylor, Max Angelelli, Ryan Briscoe........#10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley
DP-4}Mark Patterson, Oswaldo Negri, Jr.....................#60 Flight Options Lexus/Riley
DP-5}Butch Leitzinger, Andy Wallace.........................#4 The Boss Snowplow Pontiac/Crawford

Meanwhile, over in the Grand Touring(GT) division, unlike the past couple of rounds where the low-end torque of the Pontiac GTO-R's ruled, the Glen is a long, speedster track.......which meant the Porsche 911's had a field day with Porsches' finishing 1-2 ahead of the Pontiac's. Tafel Racing's Wolf Henzler and Robin Liddell won, cutting into the points lead somewhat from points leaders Marc Bunting and Andy Lally. Here are the top-5 Grand Touring results....................

GT-1}Wolf Henzler, Robin Liddell.............................#72 NEC Porsche 911 GT3
GT-2}Randy Pobst, Ian Baas..................................#36 Ajilion Consulting Porsche 911 GT3
GT-3}Paul Edwards, Kelly Collins, Andy Pilgrim.........#64 TRG/i-Rise Pontiac GTO-R
GT-4}Marc Bunting, Andy Lally, R.J. Valentine...........#65 TRG/F1 Air Pontiac GTO-R
GT-5}David Murry, Leh Keen...................................#80 Shoes for Crews Porsche 911 GT3

The Rolex Sports Car now heads for the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the EMCO Gears Classic the weekend of 23-25 June 2006.

Fernandez, Haberfeld win Emco Gears Classic

Post by mlittle » Mon Jun 26, 2006 10:25 am

In a race which saw IMHO one of the most frightening crashes in sportscar racing, two former open-wheelers led the way at Mid-Ohio in the Emco Gears Grand-Am Classic at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Although the duo of Adrian Fernandez and Mario Haberfeld(#12 Lowe's Pontiac/Riley) had one victory already in 2006(from the qual. race in Phoenix), this was their first race win of the year. It took a lot of effort on their part, for they, along with two other DP's, failed post-qual. tech Friday and in the case of the #12, had to start from last in the Daytona Prototype class. At the start, Haberfeld, who started from pit lane of all places, slowly worked his way up to the front, using every passing technique known to man to climb up to the front. Towards the halfway point, Fernandez, who won in the CART series back in 1998, climbed into the DP and continued towards the front, eventually passing the #99 Gainsco Pontiac/Riley of Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney to take the lead, which they never relinquished. Here is the top-5 from the Daytona Prototypes....

DP-1}Adrian Fernandez,Mario Haberfeld...........................#12 Lowe's Pontiac/Riley
DP-2}Jorg Bergmeister,Colin Braun.................................#76 Krohn Racing Ford/Riley
DP-3}Jon Fogarty,Alex Gurney........................................#99 Gainsco Insurance Pontiac/Riley
DP-4}Jan Magnussen, Wayne Taylor, Max Angelelli............#10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley
DP-5}Butch Leitzinger, Andy Wallace................................#4 The Boss Snowplow Pontiac/Crawford

Meanwhile, the GT class saw an interesting race and, like it says at the beginning of the post, one of the scariest crashes IMHO in sporstcar racing. Here's what happened......with about 5 minutes left, the #21 Matt Connolly Mtrspts. BMW M3 driven by Joey Hand got tapped by the #65 The Racer's Group/i-Rise Pontiac GTO-R driven by Paul Edwards as they headed down the long backstraight at Mid-Ohio. Hand got in the grass at driver's left, hit a small rise in the grass, and proceeded to do about 8 end-over-end flips, followed by several barrel rolls until the car came to a stop near the starter's stand. Hand was unhurt, but was kept overnight for observation at Mansfield Hospital; reports are that he was uninjured, but was several shaken up by the accident. At race's end, though, it was the Tafel Racing Porsche GT3 of Robin Liddell and Wolf Henzler who won, followed closely by Edwards and Kelly Collins. Here are the top-5 from the Grand Touring(GT) class.............

GT-1}Robin Liddell, Wolf Henzler....................................#72 NEC Porsche GT3
GT-2}Kelly Collins, Paul Edwards...................................#65 The Racer's Group/i-Rise Pontiac GTO-R
GT-3}Marc Bunting, Andy Lally, R.J. Valentine................#64 The Racer's Group/F1 Air Pontiac GTO-R
GT-4}Dave Lacey, Greg Wilkins....................................#17 SAMAX Porsche GT3
GT-5}Leighton Reese, Tim Gaffney................................#06 Banner Engineering Corvette C-5R

Thursday night saw the return of the Rolex Sports Car Series to the road course at Daytona Intl. Vasser to drive for Blackhawk Racing in season finale

Post by mlittle » Fri Jul 21, 2006 1:12 am

When the Rolex Sports Car Series concludes its' 2006 season at Miller Motorsports Park for the 9-hour Discount Tire/SunChaser GP, Blackhawk Racing will have, for the second time this year, the services of veteran ChampCar driver Jimmy Vasser, as he will pair up with the #99 Gainsco Pontiac/Riley's regular drivers, Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty. Here are some quotes from those involved.............

Jimmy Vasser, co-owner, PKV Racing/driver, #99 Gainsco P/R:
I'm thrilled to be back with the GAINSCO team and I think we've got an excellent chance to run strong and be in the hunt for a victory.
Bob Stallings, owner, Blackhawk Racing:
Jimmy brings good style and leadership along with all his experience and that's why I'm always excited to have him driving the 99 GAINSCO car. We've got three drivers who work together well--they depend on each other to keep the car in one piece, which is what you have to do to win these endurance races. It's really a winning mindset.
Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty, drivers, #99 Gainsco P/R:
(Alex)He's a great guy to have around; he got the car up to speed quick and he's a real asset when we sit down with Kyle back in the trailer to work on our setup. (Jon)This is definitely a solid lineup, and I think Alex, Jimmy and I work together better than any other team. There's a good vibe with the GAINSCO team right now.

Daytona Prototype battle heats up at the Glen

Post by mlittle » Wed Aug 16, 2006 11:50 am

With the Grand Touring class taking the weekend off, it was a vertiable free-for-all at last Friday's Crown Royal 200 for the Daytona Prototypes' as they took to the Watkins Glen short course; after the dust had settled, it was the Ganassi Racing CompUSA Lexus/Riley of Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz who emerged victorious. The points race, meanwhile, tightened as the current points leader, Jorg Bergmeister, saw his 39-point lead over Max "the Axe" Angelelli get chopped down to 19 pts; Pruett and Diaz sit tied for third, just 38 points back. Here are the top-5 from the race..........

1st}Scott Pruett, Luis Diaz............................#01 CompUSA Lexus/Riley
2nd}Ryan Briscoe, Max Angelelli...................#10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley
3rd}Patrick Long, Mike Rockenfeller..............#23 Ruby Tuesday Porsche/Crawford
4th}Oswaldo Negri and Mark Patterson..........#60 Flight Options Lexus/Riley
5th}Rob Finlay, Michael Valiante...................#5 Make-a-Wish/Air Force Reserve Ford/Crawford
