BMW Sauber F1 Team with new management

Hinwil,

Following the purchase of the BMW Sauber F1 Team at the end of November and the return of the BMW employees to Munich, Peter Sauber can now present the company’s new management structure. Sauber himself is the new President of the Board of Directors and will lead the Hinwil- based team as Team Principal at trackside. However, he will not take on any operational tasks in Hinwil. The new Managing Director at the team’s headquarters is Monisha Kaltenborn (38 ), who had previously held the post of Head of Legal Affairs since 1998 and has been a member of the Board of Management since 2001. In her former capacity she also looked after relations with the world governing body the FIA, the rights holder FOM and the teams’ association FOTA. An Austrian national, Kaltenborn completed a law degree at the University of Vienna before graduating as a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics.

Alex Sauber (36) is now responsible for the team’s marketing activities. The son of team owner Peter Sauber has worked in Swiss professional football for the last two years with Neue Grasshopper Fussball AG, most recently as Commercial Director. After graduating with a law degree in Zurich, he worked for two years at a firm specialising in sports and media law. Between October 2006 and October 2007 he completed an MBA in Sport Management in Liverpool.

Technical Director Willy Rampf (56) is responsible for the engineering side of the team, while Urs Jampen (62) returns to the post of Finance Director after 18 months away. Jürg Flach (40) joins the Board of Management as Director Operations with overall responsibility for production. The mechanical engineering graduate has been at the company since 1999 and was previously responsible for project management.

“Formula One is constantly changing,” says Peter Sauber. “This division of responsibilities not only meets the demands of the sport, but also freshens things up within the company. I will keep myself informed on all important developments, but will leave operational matters to the management in Hinwil.”

BMW Sauber F1 Team - Pedro de la Rosa

Post by Ed » Tue Jan 19, 2010 10:37 pm

Pedro de la Rosa to race for BMW Sauber F1 Team

Pedro de la Rosa is the BMW Sauber F1 Team’s second driver for the 2010 season. The 38-year-old Spaniard has 71 Grands Prix under his belt and worked with McLaren as a test and reserve driver for seven years. In December the Swiss team had already announced it had signed on Kamui Kobayashi (23, Japan).

“Pedro has spent many years working for a top team at the highest technical level,” pointed out Team Principal Peter Sauber, adding: “We as a team stand to gain from his experience, and the same goes for young Kamui. The combination of a seasoned racer and an up-and-coming young driver has repeatedly proved a very fruitful one. I don’t expect either of them to disappoint in 2010. Of course it is also crucial that we provide them with a decent car; I feel positive about our in-house progress on that front too. We were able to continue work on our 2010 car as scheduled throughout the recent period of uncertainty.”

Pedro de la Rosa: “I always firmly believed I would be given another chance as a team driver. Since the number of test drives were radically reduced, this was what I was working towards. I’m really excited about the season with Peter Sauber’s team, which has been a solid fixture in Formula One ever since 1993.”

Pedro de la Rosa was born in Barcelona (ES) on 24th February 1971. He has lived in Zurich (CH) for several years with his wife Maria Reyes and daughters Georgina, Olivia and Luna.

De la Rosa began karting at the relatively late age of 17, but was immediately discovered and sponsored by the Spanish Automobile Federation. A year later he had already progressed to a single-seater racing car and went on to win the Formula Fiat Uno. After successful stints in Formula Ford, Formula Renault and British Formula 3, 1997 saw him win the Japanese Formula 3000 and GT Championship.

In 1998 he made his debut as a Formula One test driver for the Jordan Team. He contested his first Grand Prix in Australia in 1999 for Arrows, taking his inferior car straight into the points with a sixth-placed finish. He remained with Arrows in 1999 and 2000, moving to Jaguar for the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

From 2003 through to 2009 he worked for McLaren-Mercedes as a reserve driver. Called upon to race for the team in nine Grands Prix, he capitalised on these opportunities. In 2005 he finished fifth in Bahrain and claimed the fastest race lap. 2006 saw him stepping into the breach again: in eight races he managed to pick up 19 World Championship points and took a podium place by finishing second in the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Fresh start!

Unveiling of the BMW Sauber C29 in Valencia

Today, Sunday, on the eve of the start of the official Formula One test drives, the BMW Sauber F1 Team rolls out its Ferrari- engined C29 at the Ricardo Tormo race track in Cheste near Valencia, Spain.

The BMW Sauber F1 Team will line up lean and hungry for the start of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship. Sixth place in last year’s constructors’ standings will serve as a starting point for the new season. The team’s aim is to establish itself at this level despite a lower budget and reduction in manpower. This demands creative thinking and an increased level of efficiency.

Drivers Kamui Kobayashi (23) and Pedro de la Rosa (38 ) will bring to the team a blend of youth and experience. Japan’s Kobayashi made his case with strong performances in two Grands Prix in 2009 and has already recorded his first World Championship points.

De la Rosa has 71 Grands Prix under his belt and has earned his place in the statistics for podium finishes and setting fastest race laps. Plus, he also brings with him valuable experience from seven years as a test and reserve driver with a leading team.

“The last few months have been very intense for us,” says team boss and owner Peter Sauber. “First we had to battle to secure the survival of the team and then we focused on putting a strong set-up in place for the future. The technical preparation of the 2010 car has continued uninterrupted and according to plan since the spring of 2009, despite all the turmoil. We have a long tradition of bringing together an up-and-coming youngster and an experienced campaigner as a driver combination – and it’s an approach that has brought us a lot of success. Pedro has been working at the highest level technically for many years and for a top team, and we can benefit as a team from this experience. Young Kamui also has a lot to offer us, and last year he impressed me particularly in Abu Dhabi.”

For De la Rosa, a long-harboured hope has been realised: “At last I can feel like a proper racing driver again. I’ve really missed the competition out on the track. At the same time, though, I’ve learned a lot technically and on the systems side, and now I want to bring that knowledge to the team.”

Kobayashi can’t wait to tackle his first full season in Formula One: “I’m very proud that Peter Sauber has shown so much faith in me and I’m determined not to disappoint him. My aim is that he will end up being proud of me as well.”

Team structure Peter Sauber (66) will be at trackside for the races in his capacity as Team Principal, while Managing Director Monisha Kaltenborn (38 ) will head up operational matters at the factory in Hinwil. Willy Rampf (56) will celebrate ten years as the team’s Technical Director in April 2010 and is again responsible for the coming season’s car.

Race car

Rampf explains: “The development of the BMW Sauber C29 has seen the team build on the experience gained last year and the improvement in performance over the final third of the season. However, the new regulations banning refuelling during the race and stipulating a reduced width for the front tyres have required significant changes to the car’s design.”

The increased length of the fuel tank means the car has grown longer overall. And because they are slimmer, the front tyres will be more heavily worked, requiring weight to be shifted further towards the rear of the car.

An eye-catching feature of the C29 is its highly intricate raised nose. Also very distinctive is an extremely long undercut at the transition from chassis into underbody. These and other aerodynamic measures also help to ensure optimum airflow to the double diffuser. Further changes were required to integrate the Ferrari engine and, in particular, the Ferrari gearbox.

Pit stops

Over the coming season, the ban on refuelling will add extra importance to one of the team’s traditional strengths: the ability to carry out fast pit stops. Previously, the time needed for the refuelling process was a key factor in determining the duration of a stop. This time element will no longer be an issue from 2010; instead, everything will be down to the speed of the mechanics. The BMW Sauber F1 Team crew have frequently stood out as the fastest workers in the pit lane.

This year’s calendar features 19 Grands Prix – as many as in 2005, the longest Formula One season to date. The Hinwil team will approach the 2010 races and its metamorphosis from a works team into an independent outfit with respect and ambition.

Test in Valencia

Valencia, 1st February 2010

The BMW Sauber F1 Team was happy with the roll-out of its 2010 car today on the Valencia circuit in Cheste. Pedro de la Rosa was at the wheel of the BMW Sauber C29 Ferrari.

Weather Sunny all day, air 10-15 °C, track 11-18 °C
Circuit length 4.004 km
Driver Pedro de la Rosa (ES)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 296.296 km (74 laps)
Fastest lap 1:12.784 min

Pedro de la Rosa “For me it was a very positive day. The car was reliable right from the beginning, which meant we could follow our programme perfectly without wasting any time. Also the car reacted to our changes very well. For me it was a day to get used to not only the new car but also to the team with all the people. And, of course, driving-wise there’s more to come from me as this was only my first day after a long break.”

Willy Rampf (Technical Director) “Overall, we are quite happy with what we achieved today. We started with an installation lap in the morning, checking the mechanical systems, followed by a baseline run in order to stabilise temperatures and pressures. We checked the hydraulic system, the fuel system and the gearshift, and everything worked well. In the afternoon we started with some basic set-up work, also to collect various data. It was a positive day without any noteworthy problems.”

What comes next Tomorrow, Tuesday, 23-year-old Kamui Kobayashi will notch up his first laps with the new car. On Wednesday Pedro de la Rosa will be taking over driving duties again.

Test in Valencia

Valencia, 2nd February 2010 – On the second test day of the 2010 Formula One season, Kamui Kobayashi debuted at the wheel of the BMW Sauber C29 Ferrari. Once again the Valencia circuit in Cheste provided very good test conditions.

Weather Sunny all day, air 5-15 °C, track 6-18 °C
Circuit length 4.004 km
Driver Kamui Kobayashi (JP)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 384.384 km (96 laps)
Fastest lap 1:12.056 min

Kamui Kobayashi “It was definitely a good day. We had no problems with the car and covered a lot of mileage. The car felt good. I enjoyed driving a lot and also working with the team. It was a difficult winter for everyone but they seem to have done a good job; I want to thank them for that. Now it is important to keep working hard for the remaining test opportunities.”

Willy Rampf (Technical Director) “It was another positive day of testing for us. First of all Kamui familiarised himself with the car and the track. We then continued with some basic set-up work and ran the car on different fuel levels. The latter is very important for us in order to be able to compare the results from the track with our results from track simulation. As yesterday, the car was reliable, which enabled us to complete our programme as scheduled.”

What comes next Tomorrow, Wednesday, will be the third and final day of testing in Valencia. Pedro de la Rosa will be taking over driving duties again.

Test in Valencia

Valencia, 3rd February 2010 – The BMW Sauber F1 Team has drawn quite a positive conclusion after the first three days of testing in Valencia with the new car for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship. Along with the F1 teams, an impressive total of 59,100 spectators enjoyed the bright sunshine over the three days of testing.

Weather Sunny all day, air 6-14 °C, track 7-19 °C
Circuit length 4.004 km
Driver Pedro de la Rosa (ES)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 320.320 km (80 laps)
Fastest lap 1:12.094 min

Pedro de la Rosa “After the roll-out on Monday this was my second day of testing with the new car and I’m happy it was another positive one. We learned a lot about the set-up of the car with these tyres, and also about the direction we have to go in with our work for the future.”

Willy Rampf (Technical Director) “We are quite satisfied with the first test. We did exactly 1001 km in total. As well as being reliable, it was important to see that the car responded to changes in the way we expected. The drivers’ comments on the car basically were in line with that, which also helps the team to work in the right direction. In the morning we lost around one and a half hours of track time because of an incident with another car. We had to change the floor, the front wing and the engine cover and to prioritise our programme afterwards. But still it was a good day on the track. Again we were lucky with the weather, which gave us very good and consistent track conditions.”

What comes next This was the third and final day of the Valencia test. The BMW Sauber F1 Team will be testing next in Jerez (10th to 13th February). For the first two days Kamui will be on duty, and Pedro for the last two

Interview with Technical Director Willy Rampf

BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Kamui Kobayashi racked up exactly 1,001 kilometres in the first test of the 2010 season in Valencia. Technical Director Willy Rampf gives his initial verdict.

Question: How happy are you with the reliability of the BMW Sauber C29 after the first test?
Willy Rampf: “All in all we can be satisfied with the reliability of the car. We completed 1,000 kilometres over the three days without encountering any major problems. Of course, we have to make some adjustments and modifications, but that’s what tests are there for.”

Question: Are these all things that can be rectified ahead of the first race of the season in Bahrain or even before the next test?
Rampf: “We will have worked through most of the points before the next test in Jerez. There’s nothing that we need to be seriously concerned about. For example, the rear of the engine cover was singed by the exhaust gases, so we’ll be using a different material for that.”

Question: How are things looking in terms of the car’s performance and competitiveness?
Rampf: “That is even more difficult to assess this year than in previous years. All we can say is that our car is delivering the performance expected based on our simulations and measurements in the wind tunnel. Vastly differing fuel loads make it impossible to draw an absolute comparison with other teams’ cars.”

Question: What are the drivers telling you about the handling of the C29?
Rampf: “The drivers’ comments have been generally positive regarding factors such as braking stability, traction and the car’s responses under widely varying fuel loads.”

Question: The fuel load of the car – and therefore its weight – will vary hugely in 2010. Has car set-up been a problem?
Rampf: “I wouldn’t call it a problem, but it’s certainly a challenge. The cars will run a minimal fuel load in qualifying and then line up for the race with a full tank, but changes to set-up will not be allowed. Finding the right compromise here will be absolutely critical.”

Question: What has changed as a result of the slimmer front tyres?
Rampf: “Generally speaking, their effect is less pronounced than expected. It’s clear that the cars have a greater tendency to understeer, which we can balance out to a certain degree by shifting the weight further back and making the necessary changes to the chassis set-up.”

Question: How is the working relationship between the drivers and the team?
Rampf: “Both drivers are new to the team and so we’re all still getting to know each other. However, the working relationship between the drivers and team has got off to a very good start. With Pedro you can see that his vast well of experience has given him a broad base of technical knowledge, which is extremely valuable for all involved. Kamui gets his impressions across very quickly, which means he can give the engineers the information they need to work out the changes required. All in all, the drivers and engineers are already working together very productively.”

Test in Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, 10th February 2010

The BMW Sauber F1 Team today started its second test of the season in Spain. The venue is the circuit in Jerez, which is faster and more demanding than the Valencia track. However, today’s test was hampered by drizzle and rain after the first hour of running in the morning. 23-year old Kamui Kobayashi (JP) was at the wheel of the BMW Sauber C29 Ferrari.

Weather Dry in the morning but wet after one hour air 10-13 °C, track 11-14 °C
Circuit length 4.428 km
Driver Kamui Kobayashi (JP)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 243.54 km (55 laps)
Fastest lap 1:23.287 min

Giampaolo Dall’Ara (Head of Track Engineering) “Sadly the weather conditions were not as we would have liked. Because of this we had to skip some mechanical and aero testing. Most of the time Kamui was running on intermediates. We did some set-up work, system checks and start practice.”

What comes next Tomorrow Kamui will be driving again before Pedro de la Rosa takes over for Friday and Saturday

Test in Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, 11th February 2010

The second day of testing in Jerez was held in lot better weather conditions as the track dried quickly in the morning. With Kamui Kobayashi being one of the drivers completing in excess of 100 laps and setting the quickest lap time of the day on his final run, the BMW Sauber F1 Team enjoyed a busy and productive day of testing.

Weather Dry track, air 12-18 °C, track 12-26 °C
Circuit length 4.428 km
Driver Kamui Kobayashi (JP)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 456.084 km (103 laps)
Fastest lap 1:19.950 min

Giampaolo Dall’Ara (Head of Track Engineering) “It was a good day of testing as we managed to complete our programme. In the morning we did some aero tests. After the lunch break we concentrated on set-up and tyre evaluation. For most of the day we were running with a high fuel load prior to a run with a lighter car before the end of the session. For tomorrow the weather forecast is not really promising, but we will cope with what we get.”

What comes next: For tomorrow and Saturday Pedro de la Rosa will be on duty at the wheel of the BMW Sauber C29 Ferrari

Test in Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, 12th February 2010

With changing and wet weather conditions today in southern Spain the BMW Sauber F1 Team took the chance to test the C29 in the wet. Pedro de la Rosa was at the wheel and happy to drive the car under different conditions.

Weather Rain on and off from shortly after 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Air 8-10 °C, track 10-12 °C
Circuit length 4.428 km
Driver Pedro de la Rosa (ES)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 256.824 km (58 laps)
Fastest lap 1:20.736 min

Giampaolo Dall’Ara (Head of Track Engineering) “In the morning at about ten past ten it started drizzling and then we had some light rain until 2 p.m. Until a quarter past four we were testing but then we stopped when the rain became too heavy as there was no need to risk anything. In the morning we skipped our usual installation lap and went straight into the programme. We managed to do a baseline run in the dry and later focused on balancing the car in the wet. We scanned different set-ups and worked on the brake system. Pedro’s comments on the car were quite positive in the wet. Nevertheless we certainly hope for better and dry track conditions tomorrow.”

What comes next Tomorrow will be the fourth and final day of this week’s Jerez test and Pedro de la Rosa will continue to drive

Test in Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, 13th February 2010

With the weather conditions improving a lot in the course of the day, Pedro de la Rosa completed 105 laps on which was the fourth and final day of the first Jerez test. Despite changing track conditions the BMW Sauber F1 Team is quite satisfied with what was achieved this week. The overall mileage for the C29 in Jerez was 1,421 km.

Weather Dry track from midday onwards, air 7-10 °C, track 8-12 °C
Circuit length 4.428 km
Driver Pedro de la Rosa (ES)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 464.940 km (105 laps)
Fastest lap 1:22.134 min

Giampaolo Dall’Ara (Head of Track Engineering) “In the morning we started with a long-run of 20 laps on intermediate tyres. We then worked on the mechanical set- up of the car. Around half past two we swap into a tyre comparison programme and in the end we carried out some aero tests. Because of the difficult weather situation this week in Jerez we are a little below expectations in terms of mileage but we still managed to cover all our topics and had no major technical problems.”

What comes next The next pre-season test for the BMW Sauber F1 Team will start on Wednesday next week in Jerez. Pedro de la Rosa is scheduled to drive on Wednesday and Thursday (17th/18th of February). Kamui Kobayashi will take over for Friday and Saturday (19th/20th of February.

Test in Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, 17th February 2010

In constantly changing weather conditions, Pedro de la Rosa, who was at the wheel of the C29, used the day to try out all the different tyre specifications.

Weather Rain on and off all day, air 12 - 18 °C, track 11 - 23 °C
Circuit length 4.428 km
Driver Pedro de la Rosa (ES)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 337 km (76 laps)
Fastest lap 1:23.367 min

Pedro de la Rosa “The conditions were obviously not ideal today, but overall things went well for us, and we were able to complete all the work we had on the programme for today. However, we hope to get in some more laps in dry conditions because we still have a lot of work to do. The weather forecast is not very good for tomorrow, so we have to make the most of every dry window we get.”

Thomas Hunsicker (Test Engineer) “The day was dominated by ever-changing weather conditions. We were able to use all the tyre specifications – wet, intermediate and dry – and worked on optimising the set-up for the various tyres as well as for different fuel levels. In addition, we completed some systems work. The car ran reliably all day.”

Test in Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, 18th February 2010

With constantly changing conditions and a wet track all day, the BMW Sauber F1 decided to limit today’s testing to 8 laps in the morning.

Weather Rain on and off all day, air 10 - 14 °C, track 10 - 14 °C
Circuit length 4.428 km
Driver Pedro de la Rosa (ES)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 35 km (8 laps)
Fastest lap 1:29.691 min

Pedro de la Rosa “With the same mixed conditions as yesterday, it simply wasn’t worth doing much driving today. We have a good understanding of the car, and I’m looking forward to the next test in Barcelona, hopefully on a dry track.”

Thomas Hunsicker (Test Engineer) “We gathered a lot of data yesterday in mixed conditions, which is why it didn’t make sense today to complete a lot of laps just for the sake of running the car. The weather forecast is better for tomorrow. That will give us the opportunity to continue working on our scheduled programme.”

What comes next Tomorrow, Friday, Kamui Kobayashi takes over for the remaining two days of testing in Jerez

Test in Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, 19th February 2010

Due to a problem with the fuel system, BMW Sauber F1 driver Kamui Kobayashi completed just 28 laps today.

Weather Overcast in the morning, sunny in the afternoon, air 9 - 16 °C, track 9 - 25 °C
Circuit length 4.428 km
Driver Kamui Kobayashi (JP)
Chassis / engine BMW Sauber C29-01 / Ferrari
Kilometres today 124 km (28 laps)
Fastest lap 1:22.228 min

Kamui Kobayashi “It was obviously not a perfect day, but I prefer to have a technical problem now rather than in the first race. Although I could only complete a limited number of laps, we learned a few things on which we can build tomorrow.”

Thomas Hunsicker (Test Engineer) “The conditions were good today, but unfortunately we weren’t able to make the best use of them. We lost a lot of time with a fuel system problem. However, the weather forecast is fine for tomorrow, so we should still be able to complete the main part of our planned programme for this test.”

What comes next Tomorrow Kamui Kobayashi will be on duty for the final day of testing in Jerez

We will now analyse the data and draw the relevant conclusions for the next test in Barcelona.”

Thomas Hunsicker (Test Engineer) “After a difficult day yesterday, I’m really pleased with what we achieved today. We worked on the set-up of the car, tested different tyre compounds and did some aerodynamic evaluations. Thanks to the good conditions and the reliability of the car, we were able to complete our overall testing programme for Jerez.”

What comes next The BMW Sauber F1 Team will resume testing on Thursday, 25th February, in Barcelona
