Post by mlittle » Tue Jul 21, 2009 10:49 am

After an interesting return to Indycar racing on the streets of Toronto, the series heads west, to Edmonton and City Centre Airport for the fifth running of what is becoming one of AOWR's more exciting races, the Rexall Edmonton Indy. The circuit, situated on the grounds of Edmonton's City Centre Airport, is akin to Cleveland's Burke Lakefront on steroids.......lots of steroids......fast, wide straights combined with narrow, technical sections make for interesting racing, no matter what happens....... 8)

Spectators cheered each pass in the flowing corners of Watkins Glen International, the final laps of an underdog headed to Victory Circle and a past winner emerging victorious again on the streets of Toronto's Exhibition Place. Their boos even caught a popular driver off-guard.

Scintillating moves in tight spaces and driver reactions to those that didn't quite work out as intended, race tire strategy and some contentious words were components that made the past two IndyCar Series races so entertaining and compelling. It portends for another thrilling race this weekend in the Rexall Edmonton Indy.

"It's just so competitive at the moment on these road and street courses," says Team Penske's Ryan Briscoe, the runner-up in both of the early July events.

"… it was all about survival," says Justin Wilson of Dale Coyne Racing, who followed a victory on the Watkins Glen road course with fourth place at Toronto.

"There were a lot of drivers taking a lot of risks and that's why so many guys didn't finish," Luczo Dragon Racing rookie Raphael Matos says of the 85-lap Toronto race won by Dario Franchitti.

"It's all about having passing zones," says Ryan Hunter-Reay, who recovered from a DNF at The Glen for seventh place at Toronto.

It's a package deal - experienced road/street circuit racers patiently (and sometimes not-so-patiently) sizing up opportunities that could pave a path to the front; circuits that reward quick and nimble cars; over-the-wall crews providing efficient service; race strategy factoring in full-course cautions and track position; Firestone tire selection; and qualifying position.

Last year, Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon had all those working in his favor on the 1.96-mile, 14-turn Edmonton City Centre Airport course to hold off Helio Castroneves at the checkered flag for his fifth victory of the season.

"Going back and knowing more, you're always expected to do better but it's going to be tough as defending champion to repeat," Dixon said.

Last July, there were nine lead changes - and four times as much overtaking throughout the field - with the "wide open areas," according to Hunter-Reay, serving up "some great racing."

"Toronto has a long backstraight where you can draft that heads up to a first-gear hairpin that makes for some great passing," says Hunter-Reay, who will drive the No. 14 ABC Supply Co. car for A.J. Foyt Racing. "It's all about having passing zones - Toronto has it, Edmonton has it - so I think we should get an exciting race. Toronto is a low-grip, bumpy track much like Edmonton that isn't a finesse track. You grab it by the neck and drive it. You can have a lot of wild cards so during the race it's kind of anybody's game."

Of course, Hunter-Reay is counting on being in the mix. He advanced five positions to finish eighth last year with Rahal Letterman Racing. "We've only been together for a few races, and if you consider the fact that we were taken out on the first lap in two of those races, we've completed Richmond and Toronto," he says. "We're still relatively new together and we're trying to make the car the way I like it on road course, and what was great about Toronto is the entire time during practices we were one of the cars in the mix. That wasn't the case at Watkins Glen. We moved on from the first-round knockout qualifying; that was our goal. I think we could have qualified 10th, but we qualified 12th and ran well during the race. There were a lot of items crossed off the list at Toronto."

EDMONTON, Alberta - Helio Castroneves didn't want to hear any residual boos from Paul Tracy fans this weekend during the Rexall Edmonton Indy. So the Team Penske driver took a proactive approach - wearing an "I (heart) Canada" T-shirt with Tracy's No. 15 inserted in the maple leaf heart at the circuit.

The reigning Indianapolis 500 champion wasn't the most popular IndyCar Series driver in Toronto two weeks ago when his car got tangled up with Tracy's as they competed for second place late in the race on the Exhibition Place course. Sustained boos - something the effervescent Castroneves isn't used to hearing - rained when he returned to pit lane.

"I will use it most of the weekend," he said. "I admire the fans. They're supporting their people and that's the way it should be." Both Tracy and Castroneves said the incident was "one of those racing things."

"He's the last person I would want to tangle with," Castroneves laughed. "It's unfortunate because it cost me a lot of points in the championship. That's what people sometimes don't understand. I was just trying to finish the race."

Tracy, who will be driving the Edmonton Honda Dealers/WoundedWarriors.ca entry for KV Racing Technology, agreed. "I think it cost me a good finish in Canada, but for him it effectively ended his championship run," said Tracy, who finished fourth on the Edmonton City Centre Airport course last year. "To make up that (78-point) difference in last six or seven races is too difficult."

Tracy also represented WoundedWarriors.ca - a nonprofit charity that supports Canadian soldiers wounded overseas - at Toronto. For a donation, spectators can sign Tracy's firesuit. It will be auctioned as a fundraiser.

"I met some of the soldiers in Toronto who had just come back from Afghanistan. They were just so proud to have someone represent them," Tracy said. "Being Canadian and supporting the Canadian troops and bringing awareness is important." July 25 is "Support Our Troops" day, with race fans asked to wear red.

Fifty-one weeks ago, Paul Tracy slid into the seat of the No. 22 Subway/Vision Racing car to start 15th in the first IndyCar Series event in Canada - the Rexall Edmonton Indy. Almost two hours later, Tracy crossed the finish line fourth in the stout lineup -- quite an achievement considering it was his first-ever IndyCar non-oval race and his first since 2002. "It was a good race, and even though it was a Vision Racing effort Derrick Walker was in charge of the car and they were on the pole the year before with Will Power as the driver," Tracy said. "They had a pretty good setup and the car was quick right away.

"I can't take all the credit for it. Derrick did a really good job with the car. The strategy and balance was good. This weekend we have a good chance to do well again."

Tracy returns to Alberta - this time in the No. 15 KV Racing Technology-prepared car that he's driven in three previous races (Indianapolis, Watkins Glen and Toronto). The Edmonton Honda Dealers/woundedwarriors.com are the primary sponsors of the entry for the Scarborough, Ontario, native, who was running as high as second at Toronto before being entangled in a late-race crash.

Tracy says the 1.96-mile, 14-turn Edmonton's City Centre Airport circuit is more physically demanding than to temporary street circuit of Toronto's Exhibition Place. "It's like Cleveland but it is bumpier and the corners are more successive," he said. "You don't have a straightaway and a chicane; you have a whole complex of lefts and rights that are really quick and some really fast, bumpy corners. It is probably the most difficult track we go to this year. It's hard and steering loads are high and grip level high."

Team co-owners Jimmy Vasser and Kevin Kalkhoven believe the 40-year-old Tracy has plenty of racing days ahead, and continue to work on a full-season sponsorship package for 2010. "Paul has had a lot of success at Edmonton and if we can give him a good car he can be pretty competitive," Vasser said. "He did a great job last year. Oriol Servia and Will Power were driving for me last year but at the end of the day PT brought it home in fourth place and surprised a lot of people. The fans know him, he's a marquee name, a historic name and it's great to have PT back."

Tracy would like nothing better than to join the circuit full time. For now, it's one on-track session at a time.

"I'd like to hope it's going to happen but I don't want to get my hopes up," Tracy said. "We are working hard to make it happen. We're going to work hard to try to find a deal, but until we find the money we have a pretty firm commitment for Indy next year with GEICO and probably back to Toronto and Edmonton but we want to run the full season next year if we can. We are working hard to make that happen, but right now we are pretty good on a handful of racetracks. We have to keep working hard over the weekend and put the rest together."

1-2-3 Penske Start at Edmonton

Post by mlittle » Sun Jul 26, 2009 11:55 am

In a start-stop-start season, Will Power will start from the pole in the Rexall Edmonton Indy. The question is will he be able to stay the course with two teammates on his rear wing. "The guy that's going to win this race is the guy that's going to make the least amount of mistakes," said Scott Dixon, who won last year and will start on the outside of Row 2.

Power, competing in his fifth IndyCar Series race of the season, is aware of the challenging and physically demanding temporary circuit. "The starting position gives you an advantage, but you've really got to use it," Power said. "As you can see, in these races, anything can happen. I just hope to have a clean race. I'd love to win one before the next few races that I get to race in."

Power earned his second PEAK Performance Pole Award by posting the quickest lap in the Firestone Fast Six qualifying session -- 1 minute, 1.0133 seconds (116.414 mph) on the 1.973-mile, 14-turn Edmonton City Centre Airport circuit in the No. 12 Penske Truck Rental car. It was the quickest lap of the weekend and came in the final minute of the 10-minute shootout that sets the first three rows on road/street courses.

He'll start next to Ryan Briscoe, last year's pole sitter who recorded his second front-row start in the past three street/road events (1:01.1232) in the No. 6 Team Penske car.

"I would have liked the pole, but the important thing is we're at the front and the car is very fast," said Briscoe, who had recorded the quickest lap of the weekend to advance to the Firestone Fast Six. "It's really handling well around this Edmonton track so it really makes us feel good going into the race.

"I've gone on to finish first when starting in second place before, so hopefully we can make that happen."

Team Penske's Helio Castroneves (1:01.2033) will join Dixon (1:01.2046), driving the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car, on Row 2.

"For a moment, I quite forgot how fun it was to fight for the pole position, but let me tell you Team Penske is awesome," said Castroneves, who posted his best starting spot on a road/street course this season. "They did a hell of a job putting three cars in the top positions. That's what happens when you have three guys that step on the gas, you get excitement and it makes you push as hard as you can."

Graham Rahal (1:01.952), driving the No. 02 McDonald's car for Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing, and IndyCar Series points leader Dario Franchitti (1:01.8344) will share Row 3.

Power, who joined Penske Racing in January as a test driver and fill-in for the St. Petersburg season opener when Castroneves was unavailable because of his federal tax evasion trial, is in the middle of a three-race set in the No. 12 entry. He started second and finished third on the streets of Toronto's Exhibition Place two weeks ago - his first action since placing fifth in the Indianapolis 500 on May 24 - and finished sixth at St. Pete and second at Long Beach (where he started on the pole).

"I'm very happy to have 1-2-3 for our team," Power said. "It just shows what a good team I'm with. None of us have really had to make too many changes this weekend. The cars have been spot on." Last year, with a full-season ride with KV Racing Technology, Power started fifth at Edmonton but the car had a mechanical issue and he finished 22nd.

Franchitti, whose final lap in the second session bumped Raphael Matos from the Firestone Fast Six, is the only driver to participate in all the shootout sessions. Rahal then bumped Mario Moraes from participating in his second Firestone Fast Six. Justin Wilson, driving the No. 18 Z-Line Designs car for Dale Coyne Racing, missed advancing to the Firestone Fast Six for the first time in five road/street course events this season.

"Qualifying eighth was OK, but honestly I expected to make the top six so I'm a little disappointed," said Matos, who started a season-high third at Long Beach. "I had to lift on one of my quick laps because I caught up to traffic, but we'll have a good car for the race. It's a long race and a very physical day. The drivers have to be physically prepared and I feel good there."

Paul Tracy, driving the No. 15 Edmonton Honda Dealers/WoundedWarriors.ca car for KV Racing Technology, was the fastest of Group 1 in the first session (20 minutes all cars) and will start on Row 5 with Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing's Robert Doornbos. Last year, Tracy advanced 11 positions to finish fourth.

Alex Tagliani, driving the No. 34 Rexall Edmonton Indy/Conquest Racing car, will start 17th. "We're definitely not where we want to be on the grid," he said. "It's been tough these last couple of days but I am still confident heading into the race. We've always come back strong. We've had really good qualifying sessions in the last few street course races we've done and we've always encountered some bad luck during the race. I'm hoping that now that we are starting further back, that luck will turn around in the race and we can have a really good finish."

The command has been given............time to go racing!
Drivers will take a sighting lap, then a pace lap; the green flag will fall third time by the start/finish line.
