08 May: Spanish Grand Prix - Race Report - Toyota

Panasonic Toyota Racing kept up its impressive start to the season at today's Spanish Grand Prix as Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher took 3rd and 4th after an epic race. The pair fought hard all day, running nose to tail for much of the race under the Barcelona sun before Jarno took his third podium in four races. The result keeps the team in second place in the constructors' championship with 40 points.

Close encounters of the third drive
Jarno Trulli took a hard won 3rd place around the Circuit de Catalunya to take his points total for the season to 26 after a race-long battle with team-mate Ralf Schumacher. The pair could barely be separated all afternoon but Jarno ended up edging home for his third podium finish of 2005. The result consolidates his second place in the world championship.

Jarno Trulli (Car 16, Chassis TF105/02)
Race Classification: 3rd Gap: +45.947s (from race winner)
Aggregate Qualifying Classification: 5th Agg Time: 2m 31.995s (+0.574s) Grid: 5th

"This was one of the best races of my career because I really had to fight for the whole of the race to keep ahead of Ralf. Ralf was very quick and probably today he deserved a podium as well as me. But I had a different strategy because my set-up meant that I was quicker with more fuel and a bit slower with less fuel in the car. It meant I had to push really hard throughout, even through the pitstops. I had a problem with the fuel rig at my first stop but in the end everything worked fine so it was a great feeling to finish on the podium again. Toyota has been doing a great job and I can't thank the team enough for the equipment they are giving me."

May the fourth be with you
Ralf Schumacher had a fine drive on his way to an eventual 4th place in today's Spanish Grand Prix. He ran with his nose under team-mate Jarno Trulli's gearbox for two-thirds of the race before finishing a fraction of a second behind. The result moves him up to equal 4th in the championship with 14 points.

Ralf Schumacher (Car 17, Chassis TF105/04)
Race Classification: 4th Gap: +46.719s (from race winner)
Aggregate Qualifying Classification: 4th Agg Time: 2m 31.917s (+0.496s) Grid: 4th

"That was a long, hard race. It's great to score so many points again and in general the race went well. I gained a place at the start and kept pushing throughout the afternoon. Unfortunately I lost ground on Jarno in the first pitstops and from then on I had to push him all the way. It was a busy race but I had no real problems with the car or tyres, so I'm happy with the way it went. It's great for the team that we have brought home 11 points between us today."

Stellar Performance
After taking 3rd and 4th places at today's Spanish Grand Prix, Panasonic Toyota Racing has kept hold of second place in the constructors' championship. Both drivers performed strongly and the team's third podium in four races is another cause for celebration.

Tsutomu Tomita - Team Principal "We're very happy to have made the podium successfully yet again, so I would like to congratulate both drivers for their excellent performances today. Either of them could have come away with the podium, but both earned a lot of points for Toyota. So it was a good race and a good day for the team all round. The reliability of the engine, chassis and transmission was perfect for both cars. So congratulations are due to the aerodynamics department and the manufacturing department, particularly composites, at TMG. It was an almost trouble-free race. We had a bit of a moment at Jarno's first pitstop when some fuel caught fire, but there was no damage to the car. We had been concerned about tyre wear before the race but it was effectively no issue at all. A good day, then, but we still finished behind two of our competitors so we still have a long way to go. Now we have to keep pushing."

Sunday Qualifying

Panasonic Toyota Racing drivers Ralf Schumacher will line up in 4th and 5th positions on the grid for today's Spanish Grand Prix after a tough second qualifying session. Both drivers complained of understeer during their laps and while Ralf was able to maintain his position from yesterday, Jarno dropped onto the third row from his provisional pole. Both drivers remain in excellent shape for the race and they are optimistic that they can take more points for the team this afternoon.

Ralf way there
Ralf Schumacher will line up in 4th place for this afternoon's Spanish Grand Prix, his best qualifying performance of 2005 so far. The German complained of understeer during this morning's lap but he is confident ahead of today's race.

Ralf Schumacher (Car 17, Chassis TF105/04)
Second Qualifying Classification: 4th Lap Time: 1m17.047s (+0.445s) Laps: 3
Aggregate Qualifying Classification: 4th Agg. Time: 2m31.917s (+0.496s) Grid: 4th

"Today was a difficult morning because I had a lot of understeer in the car. We're not sure yet where it was coming from so we'll have to check the data and look into that. I still think we can aim for a good result in the race, especially coming from the second row. Both of us have had a good weekend so far - probably even better than we expected before the event. Now I'm looking forward to the race which will be long and tough. Overtaking is very hard here so a lot of what happens will depend on what strategy teams have chosen."

Give me fiive
Jarno Trulli maintained his record of qualifying in the top five at each of the first five races of the year after this morning's second qualifying session. Understeer put paid to his chances of retaining the provisional pole position he took yesterday but he is hoping for a good result from this afternoon's Spanish Grand Prix.

Jarno Trulli (Car 16, Chassis TF105/02)
Second Qualifying Classification: 5th Lap Time: 1m17.200s (+0.598s) Laps: 3
Aggregate Qualifying Classification:5th Agg Time: 2m31.995s (+0.574s) Grid: 5th

"Like Ralf, I had a lot of understeer this morning and lost nearly half a second because of that. So I wasn't particularly happy with the car and we will have to check the data before this afternoon. But I still think we could have a good race. Here it is important to have a good start and a good strategy and fifth is not a bad place from which to get points and aim for the podium. I'm sure the atmosphere will be great this afternoon with so many Spanish fans here. Now I just have to do the best I can in the race."

Spanish Flying
Panasonic Toyota Racing goes into this afternoon's Spanish Grand Prix confident of another strong points finish after the team secured two places in the top five of the grid.

Dieter Gass - Chief Race Engineer "We had a bit too much understeer with both drivers this morning. We don't yet understand exactly how that happened so we will now have to investigate the data. But I still think were in quite good shape for this afternoon's Spanish Grand Prix. The race will be very tough on tyres and it is normally all about tyre handling. To start with two cars in the top five is quite good and I think we have the right strategy for this race."
