25 November: The Week at Renault F1: November 25, 2005

This week, keep in touch with the Renault F1 Team and discover a new department in Viry Chatillon, try to understand how we prepare the first winter testing session that will also be the first Formula 1 drive for Kubica and Mondini and review one of the most exciting races of the 2005 season: the San Marino Grand Prix.

The birth of a champion
2005 was a season of firsts: a new Grand Prix in Turkey, new technical regulations and especially the battle between the five time world champion, Michael Schumacher, and the new generation of drivers lead by Fernando Alonso. The San Marino Grand Prix marked the first step in this transition: Fernando Alonso took victory in a fabulous race thanks to his talent and an extraordinary will to win, resisting Schumacher's attacks even though the German was much faster. Back on the track
After a short break, the Renault F1 Team is now preparing its next test session that will take place in Barcelona from November 30 to December 2, 2005. Instead of developing a hybrid car, the Renault F1 Team has decided to be pragmatic and to take benefits from its 2005 success. "From our point of view, we have taken a pragmatic decision not to run an interim car, based on the potential return on investment involved in this type of project" explained Bob Bell. Running will begin with a restricted' V10 to simulate predicted power levels for next year in order to allow tyre testing that will be essential for the 2006 season owing to the new regulations. Formula One Academy
Robert Kubica, 2005 World Series by Renault champion, and the 2004 Renault V6 winner Giorgio Mondini, will both have the opportunity to discover Formula One during the next Renault F1 Team test session in Barcelona. Pat Symonds sets the main target of this test: "We don't expect impressive lap times, we want to ensure they understand how to drive a Formula 1 car efficiently". Let's hope they will both enjoy this extraordinary experience. Click here to read more
