AMBROSE WATCH

Post by Julian Mayo » Tue Dec 06, 2005 7:07 am

Heres the thread to post updates on the Little Aussie Battler as he takes on the might of the USA.
Love him or hate him Ambrose certainly takes an impressive CV to his new career.
In only three years of competing Ambrose compiled the following;
V8 Supercar Champion in 2003, 2004.
65 starts for:
15 round wins
27 race wins
18 poles.
Only once did he finish worse than third. (source Melb Age 6/12/05)

He still has unfinished business however, success at The Mountain still eludes him

I might give watching nascar another go that I know of a driver that is taking part. I've tried to watch it before but gave up after only a handful of laps. I found that drivers names meant nothing to me and I'm not really into oval racing.

The toughest tracks(IMHO) on the calendar that Ambrose will face are(in no particular order):Daytona, Atlanta, Martinsville, Bristol, and Texas. And, just like fellow Aussie Ryan Briscoe had to contend w/a woman for rookie honors over in the IRL IndyCar Series, so will Ambrose in the Craftsman Truck Series; one of the rookie drivers listed is 24-yr.-old Erin Crocker, who had a pretty decent ARCA series season in 2005 but will be transitioning over to the trucks for 2006.

25 races in a season is damn impressive.
Ok, Lewis may win the WDC in 07, but Sato will beat him in 08.

It gets better. If and/or when Ambrose makes it into, say, the NASCAR Busch or Nextel Cup series', he'll be facing a 34-36 wk. schedule, not a 25-race schedule.   8)

Preview.......round 1, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, GM Flex-Fuel 250, Daytona Intl. Speedway, Daytona. Fla.

Q}What do you get when you take 36 trucks, put em' on a 2.5-mile, 31-degree banked oval, and turn them loose for 100 laps?
A}Umm.....One interesting race. Last year saw three multi-truck wrecks, two trucks flip over and crash, and controversy at the end. Safe to say this year's'll be no exception.

As for the race......Nextel Cup veteran Mark Martin will start from pole for tomorrow night's race, with NCTS veteran Bill Lester starting 2nd. Unfortunately, Marcos Ambrose was one of seven drivers who failed to qualify for the race; ironically, if the field had been set strictly on speed, he'd have gotten a mid-pack starting slot(19th fastest of 43 qualfiers). Why did he fail to qualify? NASCAR's qualifying procedures protect the top 30 trucks in owner points from the previous season for this race and the next 4(when they go to Mansfield in May, the top 30 in owner's pts. for this year will be protected), meaning that when qualfying was over, the grid set in the following manner......all entries that made qualifying attempts who were in that top-30 "zone" from 2005 got in, as well as the first 6 who weren't. Because Ambrose is driving a new truck for 2006, it means that, to qualify, he has to qualify on speed. In this case, he came very close, but failed to qualify.   :(

Tell me about it. It's another reason I'm not too fond of the taxicabs. Now, there were 2 reasons they put the current qual. system in...1}to keep NCTS regulars from losing spots on the grid to non-series drivers, and 2}to keep all the sponsors happy.

Put simply.....NASCAR's got the most screwed-up qual. system in the world; I suspect it makes some of F1's ideas on qual. seem rather decent.
