2007 IRL Rd. 2--Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

Post by mlittle » Wed Mar 28, 2007 2:36 pm

With one round of the 2007 season in the books, it's time to pack up the wagons and head about halfway up the Florida Peninsula to the Gulf Coast and Tampa Bay(okay, to be precise....St. Pete!   ) and the second round of the 2007 IndyCar Series season, the Honda Grand Prix of St. Pete. A hybrid course, the circuit combines sections of Alfred Whitted Field and the nearby streets of St. Pete, giving drivers plenty of challenges.......fast straights, tight corners and chances aplenty. Here is the event schedule for the weekend..............

Firestone Shootout} approximately 10-15 minutes following qual. session
Final Practice Session} 10:15-10:45 am, 1 April 2007
Honda GP of St. Pete} 2:30 pm, 1 April 2007
note....all times are local U.S. EDT/-4 hrs. GMT

Domestic TV} ESPN
Domestic radio} IMS Radio Network(AM), XM Satellite Radio(Ch. 144)

As always, I'll have observations, commentaries, thoughts and other things to entertain readers during the weekend....... :burnout: :burnout:

Fast lap around St. Pete.......

Post by mlittle » Sat Mar 31, 2007 8:46 am

Now that I can catch my breath, here's my description of one lap at speed on the street circuit at St. Pete......... :burnout: :drive: :drive:

One of the more interesting things to do during the race weekend is to get to take a lap at speed; which I got to do, alongside sportscar veteran Butch Leitzinger in a Porsche 911. After a couple of laps to acclimate, we round the hairpin going onto the front straight and as we pass the start/finish line, we're already flat out, heading towards turn one. Just as we pass the 300-ft. marker, Leitzinger pops the throttle even wider(how I don't know....    ) and then jams on the brakes into the corner. Just as quickly as we go through the right-hander at one, it's back on the brakes into two. Now we're no longer on the concrete of the runways at Alfred Whitted Field but now we're on the asphalt of St. Pete. heading down to turn 3 before flying down a medium-length straight down to 4.

Just as I catch my breath for the first time, BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM!! Or, turns 5-6-7-8. :shock2: :shock2: :drive: Essentially a roller-coaster ride, this part of the track goes left-left-right-right. Word of advice.....don't eat or drink anything before going through this part of the course.......

Once through eight, it's back on the gas along the long back-straight heading towards turn 9(the Acura Kink) and turn 10(Honda corner...note; this is where in 2005, Tony Kanaan punted Ryan Briscoe into the tirewalls on the outside of the turn....     ). Flying down this section of the course, every muscle in my stocky 5'9" frame is taut; the concrete walls just seem to get closer and closer and closer as the speed creeps up. At least there's one good thing about this section; unlike the other side of the course, which can feel downright claustrophobic, looking off to the left one can see all the yachts in the marina and docks along the course(Hey, I can see the Honda yacht from here.....!!  ). As soon as Leitzinger jams the brakes through Honda Corner, it's back on the gas down to the 11-12 chicane(and more views of concrete walls!) and finally back to the double-apex hairpin(officially, it's listed as turns 13 and 14, but its' driven as one sweeping hairpin) where Leitzinger somehow manages to light up both the brakes and throttle, steppin' out the rear a bit but going through the corner quite nicely. And that concluded one lap at speed on the St. Pete street circuit.

Granted, St. Pete's not my favorite street circuit(those would be Long Beach and Monaco) but it is a very challenging, technical course that will bite you in a minute if you let it. Good luck to all the drivers this weekend!!

2 in a row at St. Pete. for Spiderman......

Post by mlittle » Mon Apr 02, 2007 12:54 pm

If the intermediate ovals are becoming Dan Wheldon's raison d'etre and road courses like Watkins Glen are likewise for Scott Dixon, then street circuits are that way for Team Penske's Helio Castroneves, who won for the second straight time on the challenging street course on the St. Petersburg waterfront.

Leading all but 5 laps today(the only times he didn't lead were during pitstops.....   ), Castroneves crossed the start/finish line .601 sec. ahead of Target/Ganassi's Scott Dixon(the closest finish on an IndyCar Series road/street circuit) but.....the day's activities belied the finish.....

Highlights and Thoughts on the Race................
~~Oops on the language!! When the post-script for this race is written, I suspect series officials are going to give Kosuke Matsuura a nice "present"(read.... a monetary fine!) for inappropriate language during an interview w/ABC's Brienne Pedigo after getting punted into the tirewalls by Jeff Simmons following a dive-bombing pass attempt by Simmons at turn 4.....The irony over Matsuura's use of the "f-bomb" wasn't in using it(inappropriate, yes, but...IMO Simmons deserved it; he did dive-bomb Matsuura entering the corner.... ); it was the fact that ABC Sports didn't catch it and use a delay on it(lead announcer Marty Reid apologized on-air for Matsuura's language later in the broadcast)....

~~How dominant? How dominant has Helio Castroneves been at St. Pete? Well......how about 135 of 200 laps led in two years.

~~Comeback of the Day Awards.......this award goes to Andretti-Green Racing drivers Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti for their herculean efforts today......for Kanaan, the day began by getting nerfed into the tirewalls by Franchitti, causing him to have to claw his way back to the front and hang on all race.....for the Scotsman, he spent several laps on pitlane as his team repaired some front suspension damage; he fell back two laps but through pit management and opportune passing, found himself back up to 5th by race's end.

Top-10 from St. Pete................
1st} #3 Helio Castroneves....................................100 laps
2nd} #9 Scott Dixon.............................................-.601 sec
3rd} #11 Tony Kanaan..........................................-7.913 sec
4th} #26 Marco Andretti........................................-13.509 sec
5th} #27 Dario Franchitti.......................................-14.594 sec
6th} #2 Tomas Scheckter......................................-25.311 sec
7th} #6 Sam Hornish, Jr........................................-27.072 sec
8th} #7 Danica Patrick..........................................-28.038 sec
9th} #10 Dan Wheldon..........................................-34.390 sec
10th} #15 Buddy Rice...........................................-46.908 sec

Helio Castro-Neves is perhaps the best in the IRL overall, but the competition is strong in this series. Sam Hornish, Scott Dixon, Dan Wheldon, Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti are damn near even with Castro-Neves who IMHO is driving for the best team (Penske isn't as over extended with NASCAR and other series like Ganassi). Marco Andretti is starting to join this group as well. I am very proud of him. He is like the Felipe Massa of IRL right now. Very exciting!!!
