The Week's Storylines..............................
1} 2-way points battle.............With six races left on the calendar, the battle for the championship appears to be a 2-way fight btwn. Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon; can the Scotsman stretch out his 34-pt. lead some or will the Iceman shrink it down more?

2} Local connections............For IndyCar Series drivers Sarah Fisher and Sam Hornish, Jr., Mid-Ohio is a home race as both hail from Ohio(Fisher from Commercial Point, OH and Hornish, Jr. from Defiance, OH); for Rahal-Letterman Racing, Mid-Ohio's their home race as the team is based out of Hilliard, Ohio, just outside the state capitol of Columbus.

Pre-race news and notes...............

Post by mlittle » Mon Jul 23, 2007 3:18 am

~~One bit of good news for the IndyCar Series came yesterday, as Aguri-Panther Racing will field a third IndyCar for current Indy Pro Series driver Hideki Mutoh at the ICS season finale at Chicagoland, joining drivers Vitor Meira and Kosuke Matsuura. Driver lineups for the team will be IIRC,

Vitor Meira, #4 Delphi
Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic/ARTA/TPR
Hideki Mutoh, #60 Honda Formula Dream Project

~~Another storyline going into the race was the return of Andretti-Green Racing to the front of the field, as all four drivers placed in the top-6 for the Firestone Pole Shootout.........Care to guess who led the AGR train?
--Dario? Nope!
--TK? Nope!!
--Marco? Nah.....
--Who's left.......oh, Danica!!

Yeah, that would be correct. After a not-so great race at Watkins Glen a few races back, Patrick put the #7 Motorola car on point during SCQ, then put the car squarely on the front-row in the Shootout. Hopefully, the confidence-building performance in qualifying will give the Motorola team a boost and possibly put Danica in victory lane today.

~~Throttle problems? Twice this weekend a bit of a problem has developed, first with the IPS car of Jonathan Klein Saturday and then in the final warm-up w/Ryan Hunter-Reay's IndyCar. Both crashed when, during braking, the throttles stuck and sent them flying into the tirewalls at different parts of the circuit. Series officials and officials with Dallara have been looking at the problem and think they have a handle on it. What's happening is that, for some reason, if the brakes suffer a failure(brake pedal brakes or a master cylindeer goes bad, for instance) it can send the brake pedal right to the floor and, if the throttle's close enough, can take the throttle w/them. Series tech officials have sent a technical bulletin to all the ICS and IPS teams to check the throttle and brake assemblies throughout the weekend; thankfully, there is an off-week next week, so IRL officials should have a handle on this.

Beginning to form up in rows of 2 for the start; due to the layout of Mid-Ohio, the finish line is on the pitstraight, but the race will start on the long backstriaght past the kink prior to turn 4

Passing the finish line, preparing to start....................cars formed up, entering the Keyhole(turn 2)

GREEN FLAG! GREEN FLAG!!!

And we have a caution!! Full-course caution!
Looks like Patrick went off-course to the outside; she's back on, but down a few spots; Marco's flipped over, second time this year he's gone over this year(including Indy)

Looks like Kanaan clipped the right-rear of Patrick's car; Patrick goes off-track for a moment.....then Kanaan spins and clips Marco, which sends him over; he is okay, but it will be a very animated post-race debrief in the AGR paddock this evening.

Top-3 at the moment are Castroneves, Dixon and Manning; all three have prior experience at this track from their CART days(Castroneves has 2 wins from CART races in 2000 and 2001)

Pits are open now........looks like Kanaan's team are setting up for a stop
