As Milwaukee descends in the rear-view mirror, the stars of the IndyCar Series head south to the land where "everything is bigger"....Texas and the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway, a track which features lightning-fast, close-quarters racing on the 24-deg. highbanks....its' no wonder former IndyCar Series driver Scott Sharp opined that "It's our Talledega."......IMHO, he wasn't kidding. You need both cast-iron nerves and huge brass ..........(Mod's note.....you know what I mean by stones!!!..............    ) to do well at Texas...but be careful, also; one tank-slapper moment or wrongward twitch and you can ruin your day and others in a heartbeat.........

Past Texas IndyCar Series winners................................
~~1997: Arie Luyendyk
~~1998: Billy Boat(1), John Paul, Jr.(2)
~~1999: Scott Goodyear(1), Mark Dismore(2)
~~2000: Scott Sharp(1), Scott Goodyear(2)
~~2001: Scott Sharp(1), Sam Hornish, Jr.(2)
~~2002: Jeff Ward(1), Sam Hornish, Jr.(2)
~~2003: Al Unser, Jr.(1), Gil de Ferran(2)
~~2004: Tony Kanaan(1), Helio Castroneves(2)
~~2005: Tomas Scheckter
~~2006: Helio Castroneves
~~2007: Sam Hornish, Jr.

Event Schedule(all times US CDT; -1 hr US EDT/-5 hrs GMT).............................

Firestone Fast Facts........................

Post by mlittle » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:40 am

~~Event: Bombardier LearJet 550k, round 7 of the 2008 IndyCar Series season
~~When: 9:30 pm US EDT, 7 June 2008
~~Where: Texas Motor Speedway, Ft. Worth, Tx.

Track Facts...............
~~both the frontstretch and backstretch are banked at 5 degrees
~~turns are banked at 24 degrees
~~Texas Motor Speedway is a tri-oval with a dogleg frontstretch

Firestone Tire Facts..........
~~Firestone will be using different tire compounds at Texas than in past years; the tire compounds, according to Bridgestone Motorsports Director Al Speyer, will be the same as those used at Kansas and Homestead this year

Texas Storylines..................................
~~First-time winner? Three times this year(Graham Rahal--St. Pete; Danica Patrick--Motegi; Ryan Briscoe--Milwaukee) a driver has notched their first career IndyCar Series win.....could someone add their name to the list?

~~Don't blink.............over the years, the close, side-by-side racing at Texas has produced very close finishes, including two of the five closest in series history(both occurred in 2002; Jeff Ward beat Al Unser, Jr. to the stripe by 0.111 sec. at the summer Texas race, while Sam Hornish, Jr. beat Helio Castroneves to the line by 96 1/10,000ths of a second in the fall race). In fact, two of the closest 1-2-3 finishes in series history took place at Texas, so don't be surprised if there's another razor-thin finish at the "Texas Supercollider"......

~~Penske dominance........Team Penske, since coming to the series in 2002, has four wins at Texas(Castroneves with 2 wins, along with one win each for Gil de Ferran and Sam Hornish, Jr.). Could either of the Captain's drivers' make it to Victory Lane Saturday night and continue their dominance?

Wheldon injured in practice crash at TMS...........

Post by mlittle » Sat Jun 07, 2008 7:34 am

Image

Updating from tracksideonline.com......TGR's Dan Wheldon was injured during the second practice session today after suffering a hard crash in turn 4; his car then slid into the frontstretch infield and flipped several times....despite the severity of the crash, reports are that Wheldon was alert and awake when the Delphi safety team reached him(a/k/a there was no LOC or Loss of Consciousness) and that he was complaining of ankle pain; he was taken to the infield care center and examined, where doctors found an injury to his right ankle. According to TSO, Wheldon's ankle has been wrapped in ice and immobilized at the moment; no word from series officials as to whether he has been cleared for tomorrow night's race.

Random Thoughts I.......

Post by mlittle » Sat Jun 07, 2008 9:26 am

~~Watching the live video feed(courtesy of the IMS Radio Network), its' interesting to see the crowds building this evening for not just qualifying but for this evening's Craftsman Truck Series race....granted, I suspect, most are arriving to watch the trucks, but ever since mergification, there hasn't been one practice session anywhere where the crowds aren't larger than years past

~~Watching Wheldon's wreck from earlier today, its' a testament to the safety and strength of the Dallara chassis' that that' wreck wasn't as bad as it was........

~~Hearing reports that Roth Racing may have John Andretti stay in the #24 Roth Racing entry for the remainder of 2008.......my question is, instead of having him race in Jay Howard's entry, why don't they have him run the #24, move Howard over to the #25 and take over "Mad Dog" Marty Roth 's ride for the rest of the year?
