For the second year in a row, the stars of the IndyCar Series turn their attentions to the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York and the scenic, yet very challenging 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International road course. With the points battle in full swing, all eyes will be on points leader Scott Dixon......can he make it four in a row, or will someone else lay claim to the Argetsinger trophy and the Seneca wreath that goes with it?

Firestone Tire Update..........

Post by mlittle » Thu Jul 03, 2008 7:38 pm

Officials with Bridgestone Motorsports(parent company for Firestone Racing in North America) announced the tire specifications for this weekend's race at Watkins Glen...............
--teams will receive 14 sets of Firestone Firehawk racing tires[10 sets of dry-weather slicks, 4 sets of wet-weather tires]; teams that make it into the third and final round of PEAK Motor Oil Qualifying(a/k/a the Firestone Pole Shootout) will receive one additional set of dry-weather slicks
--the tires for this weekend's race are a new specification for Watkins Glen; the tires were recently tested during an Indy Lights test a week or so earlier during their recent Open Test

Al Speyer, Executive Director--Bridgestone Motorsports:
If June was short-oval month for the IndyCar Series, then July is definitely a road-course month since three of the four events (on the calendar) call for our road-course tire inventory. This weekend we visit Watkins Glen international, one of the most historic and renowned permanent road courses in the United States. The racing is always exciting on this long, winding track with many elevation changes. Being so long and so fast, the Glen is also demanding on tires, which is why Firestone is bringing an updated version of our road-course tires this weekend. We believe our new Firestone Firehawk spec will give the drivers the added durability they desire, while still providing the necessary grip to attack this always challenging and legendary racetrack.

RHR wins at the Glen......

Post by mlittle » Mon Jul 07, 2008 8:36 am

Four times already in 2008(Graham Rahal at St. Pete., Dancia Patrick at Motegi, Will Power at Long Beach and Ryan Briscoe at the Milwaukee Mile) we've seen a first-time winner......add Ryan Hunter-Reay's name to the list as he drove a flawless race to notch his first IndyCar Series win(his third career AOW win, counting wins at Surfers Paradise and Milwaukee) in what was an interesting and sometimes[at least for the frontrunners.......   ] bizarre Camping World Indy Grand Prix........more later this evening.

Back in 2004, Rahal-Letterman Racing last won an IndyCar Series race w/driver Buddy Rice at the wheel in Michigan.......fast forward to July 2008, where, thanks to some smart driving on the part of race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, the team returned to Victory Lane for the first time since Michigan. Taking advantage of a rare case of brain fade from points leader Scott Dixon, whos' late-race spin took both himself and Ryan Briscoe out of contention for the win, RHR quickly dispatched Darren Manning on a late re-start and never looked back as he drove off to victory.

The other major story coming from the Glen was the numerous examples of brain-fade on the part of several IndyCar Series drivers during the course of the race................
~~Dixon's late-race spin and the ensuing crash into him by Briscoe
~~E.J. Viso seemingly running Vitor Meira into the wall at turn 8
~~Enrique Bernoldi spinning by himself at turn 1
~~Milka Duno and A.J. Foyt, IV crashing into each other btwn. turns 8 and 9
~~Danica Patrick's qtr.-spin on pitlane that nearly, it seemed, to take out several TGR crew members
(Mod's note......aren't these drivers supposed to be professionals?   )

In the end, though, it was the Texan, RHR, who finally gave Rahal-Letterman their first win over three years. Rounding out the podium in 2nd was Foyt Racing's Darren Manning and AGR's Tony Kanaan.

Top-10 from an interesting trip to the Glen...................
1st} #17 Ryan Hunter-Reay, 60 laps
2nd} #14 Darren Manning, -2.401 sec
3rd} #11 Tony Kanaan, -4.105 sec
4th} #15 Buddy Rice, -4.811 sec
5th} #26 Marco Andretti, -5.313 sec
6th} #18 Bruno Junquiera, -5.808 sec
7th}(R)#19 Mario Moraes, -8.625 sec
8th}(R)#06 Graham Rahal, -9.456 sec
9th}(R)#27 Hideki Mutoh, -10.179 sec
10th}(R)#33 E.J. Viso, -10.862 sec
