Two races remain in the 2009 IndyCar Series season as the series' makes its' annual pilgrimage to the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan, and the uniquely shaped 1.5-mile Twin Ring Motegi. Built by Honda in the early 1990's as a test track, the oval, built into the side of a mountain, has become one of the more recognizable circuits on the tour ever since CART first ran on the oval back in 1998. However, running well here isn't so much of lighting the tires and going all-out; fuel strategy has become the mantra of the track, where it can either bring you a historic victory(a/la Danica Patrick's win in 2008) or famine(as in when Tomas Scheckter's car ran dry with a lap to go back in 2005).

But this year's race brings an added bit of intrigue to the series; rather than being run in the early part of the season, Motegi now assumes an important part of the championship fight as three drivers, Ryan Briscoe, Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon are all fighting for the series title with two races remaining on the calender; a good result by either the Scotsman or the Kiwi could propel one of them to the fore, while a dominant win by the Aussie could all but wrap up the title.

Twin Ring Motegi is unlike any track the IndyCar Series has visited this year, which will provide a fitting battleground for the championship contenders. Ryan Briscoe of Team Penske has a 25-point lead over Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Dario Franchitti. Teammate Scott Dixon is third, 33 points back.

"It is a tough place, it's demanding," Dixon said. "You still have the main guys running up there. The race car goes off there really bad at some points throughout the race. That is the challenging part."

The 1.5-mile oval features frontstraights each measuring 1,969 feet and 80-feet wide. The frontstretch is banked at 1.7 degrees with the backstretch at 5 degrees. The turns are 10 degrees in banking.

"It is definitely one of the toughest tracks we go to," Dixon said. "It's funny because it is a 1½-mile oval but it is shaped like an egg and very different. Turns 3 and 4 are very difficult but Turns 1 and 2 are so easy and wide open you get a tow going into Turn 3.

"It's completely different than any track we go to. You have half the downforce you would have at Milwaukee or Phoenix. It's really on the edge. There is a big bump going into Turn 3. I think you need to have a lot of confidence on that track. It's a tough track and if you shake your confidence at all going in there it takes a lot of commitment going into Turns 3 and 4. You have to stay committed and some years we go there we are running wide open over 200 miles an hour, which is pretty crazy."

The challenging circuit will reward the driver, team and strategy because all will be equally important.

"Motegi always puts on great shows so I'm looking forward to that," said Franchitti, the 2007 series champion. "All three guys in the championship will be good there in addition to six or seven other people. It's open season really. The different turns offer a challenge to set up the car but it also makes great racing. I think it's cool. The Japanese fans are mad about their racing so the fact we get to go there and it is part of the championship chase, it's good for them and for us."

The Indy Japan 300 was moved this year from April to September, which will provide a different weather variable. Also, nine drivers are expected to make their debut on the racetrack.

"Those guys are having the battle. I'm not in the mix so I can do everything I can to help (Briscoe) out and get him the title," said three-time pole sitter Helio Castroneves, who won the race in 2006. "For the Ganassi boys, they are battling each other for the title. If that becomes an issue, it would be a good issue for us."

This is a fish story with a different angle (or angler as the case may be). Reigning Bassmaster Classic Champion Skeet Reese was a guest of the Indy Racing League and VERSUS pit reporter Robbie Floyd at the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma.

"I had no idea how cool open-wheel racing was," said Reese, who toured the garages and watched much of the race from pit lane. "I've seen it on television of course, but to enjoy a race from up close was totally different. Watching the efficiency of the crews as they turned out 6- to 10-second pit stops and the speed those drivers pushed those cars to was mind blowing. I'm definitely a fan of Indy racing now; I can't wait to watch more."

The next day, Reese invited Indy Racing League president of competition and operations Brian Barnhart and IndyCar Series technical director Kevin Blanch to his workplace - Clear Lake near Kelseyville, Calif., which is the largest freshwater lake in the state.

Almost 30 bass in the 3- to 5-pound range were landed, with Reese taking honors for the day with a 7-pounder. "We had fun all day, but there was a three-hour period that we seemed to catch them fairly steadily," he said. "It was a great day, and I made some new friends as well."

The loudest ovations at Twin Ring Motegi will follow the introduction of drivers Hideki Mutoh, Kosuke Matsuura and Roger Yasukawa for the Indy Japan 300.

Mutoh, of Tokyo, started ninth and finished 11th last year in his first IndyCar Series race at the 1.5-mile oval in the No. 27 Formula Dream car for Andretti Green Racing. Yasukawa, whose family moved to Los Angeles from Japan when he was 2 years old, will compete for the fifth time at Twin Ring Motegi -- this year in a Dreyer & Reinbold Racing car. Matsuura, from Aichi, Japan, is making his first IndyCar Series start since 2007.

"To have Roger and Hideki and me racing at Motegi is very important," said Matsuura, the 2004 IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year who will drive a Conquest Racing-prepared car.

"Three Japanese drivers in that race are great, but I don't care how many Japanese drivers are in the same category because I'm competing against all drivers. If I wanted to compete against Japanese drivers I would be running in Formula Nippon.

"But IndyCar is a top category in America. Everyone wants to drive IndyCar but not everyone has the opportunity. I'm happy to have an opportunity to come back to IndyCar at Motegi. The Motegi race is very important to me and I last raced at Motegi in 2007. That was my most important race but on the first lap, I spun and hit the tire barrier. I was very disappointed with that and I wanted revenge for that race. I wanted to race Motegi again.

"The event is so big - 70,000 spectators coming - it is the second biggest event in Japan behind Formula One. That is why it is so important for me to race there."

Matsuura said after 2007 he didn't know if he would ever get another chance to race in the IndyCar Series. He served as a television commentator for IndyCar Series telecasts for Japanese TV.

"I was getting more and more excited to come back," Matsuura said. "I missed it a lot because my friends are racing here. The schedule at Motegi helped me a lot because this race is in September. If it had been April, it would have been hard to put at deal together because it was so early in the season.

"Because it is in September, it was quite easy for me to negotiate with the team and sponsors."

While Matsuura and Yasukawa will both be enjoying their one-offs, Mutoh is hoping to crack the top 10 in the IndyCar Series standings. He enters the 200-lap race seven points behind 10th-place Justin Wilson.

Preparing for the 13-hour difference...............


Robert Doornbos prepared for the Indy Japan 300 by working in a visit with family and friends in The Netherlands along with working out. Motegi, Japan, is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time.

"Having the time changes, I'm sort of getting used to it, because with traveling from Europe to the U.S. you always go back in time, which is not bad," said Doornbos, driver of the No. 33 HVM Racing car. "But now we actually go ahead into time, which is something new. So you do have to adjust your body, your bio-rhythm. You try to arrive five or six days in advance."

Doornbos says getting the body into a regular exercise routine will help.

"What I like to do is running, cycling, swimming, just a lot of cardio work," Doornbos said. "And I think it's one of the best ways to relax as well after a 12-hour flight, just to move the arms and legs. Just move the body a bit, make yourself tired. And then early to bed and focus on the race weekend."

MOTEGI, Japan -- A Danica Patrick clone? That might be the ticket for the Andretti Green Racing driver at Twin Ring Motegi and all parts Japan this weekend. Swarms of fans followed Patrick, whose victory in the Indy Japan 300 last year gave her the distinction of being the first woman to win a major closed-course auto race, almost everywhere (the restroom was respectfully off-limits) on Friendship Day at Twin Ring Motegi. Pictures and autographs of course were sought, but even singling out a fan with just a wave or smile during a lunchtime session with a growing crowd was enough to elicit applause and giggles.

In addition to hand-crafted gifts fans presented her, Patrick saw her likeness on the 4-foot trophy of Indy Japan 300 race winners as part of a large display featuring Patrick's feat in the Honda Collection Hall at the track. Each winner receives a miniature version. She also had the honor of selecting and naming an alcoholic concoction to be served on race day.

"I love Japan," she said. "Even if I hadn't won here I love coming here. Being in the hotel and seeing little clips from last year brings back such good memories. It does feel different because I always expected to win and knew it would happen but didn't know how it would feel to come back as a winner. It feels really good and I have a little more confidence."

Patrick and her husband, Paul Hospenthal, considered their sightseeing options for Sept. 20-21 in Tokyo only to learn their first choice wasn't an option.

"I just heard today that the fish market is closed on Sunday and Monday and I'm really disappointed because I've been meaning to go every year," Patrick said. "But I love Japan and there is never enough time in one trip to do all the things I want to do here. I wish I had more time."

Qualifying for the penultimate round of the 2009 IndyCar Series championship had an element of danger and suspense that hadn’t been seen since Pole Day at the Indy 500. With two interruptions for crashes by Hideki Mutoh and Helio Castroneves, pole position changed hands four times with Target Chip Ganassi’s Scott Dixon grabbing the top spot on the final attempt of the day.

Dixon entered Motegi 33 points behind fellow Antipodean Ryan Briscoe, but with the extra point awarded for pole, the gap was brought down to 32.

"Championships come down to that one point," said Dixon. "It's definitely heading in the right direction. Last year we were dominating the race and still you could not be on the right strategy and somebody else could win. So we've got to try to keep pushing, but do it I think skillfully to make sure we don't go out there, burn a bunch of fuel, get ourselves in trouble as well. First step is done. Hopefully, we can continue in that direction. But we've still got 32 points to catch up to Ryan. That's a lot of points, unless he has a bad day."

After two quick practice sessions, and with Motegi's history of wet weather conditions, the series moved qualifying up to avoid any chances of encountering rain. With the short turnaround, teams had little time to make drastic changes for time trials and it showed as Dixon’s pole speed of 202.031 was nearly identical to the 202.105 he turned to head the final practice.

Graham Rahal was the first driver out to quality for the Japan Indy 300, setting a four-lap average of 200.689. Rahal held the pole after runs by E.J. Viso, Marco Andretti, and teammate Oriol Servia until Dario Franchitti snatched the top spot with an average speed of 201.395mph.

Franchitti’s speed withstood successive attempts by Tony Kanaan, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Ryan Briscoe, Robert Doornbos, and Hideki Mutoh. Qualifying was paused when the Japanese driver lost the rear of his car entering turn three on his second timed lap and flattened the left side of his car against the SAFER barrier.

The AGR driver extricated himself slowly from his Formula Dream-sponsored car and limped to the ambulance under his own power, favoring his left leg. His first lap of 198.718 was good enough for the fifth fastest speed, but with his place in the series in question for 2010, the Honda-funded driver didn’t strengthen his case by crashing at the Honda-owned facility. He was quickly released from the infield care facility and cleared to drive at his home race.

Qualifying resumed with former IRL regular Roger Yasukawa piloting his sticker-less Dreyer & Reinbold entry, followed by popular 2008 race winner Danica Patrick. Despite a fast warm-up lap, Patrick dealt with slight understeer and a gear change issue on her run, posting an average speed of 200.519 which was good enough for 6th.

Franchitti’s pole lasted until the final lap of Mario Moraes’ run. Just .010 behind the Scot through his first three laps, a monster fourth tour moved the young Brazilian into the top spot with a speed of 201.504, .109 faster than the Target driver.

With ten cars left to make their runs, Moraes watched as Mike Conway, Tomas Scheckter, Rafa Matos, Dan Wheldon, Stanton Barrett, Justin Wilson, and Helio Castroneves took their shots before qualifying was once again interrupted when the Brazilian found the wall. The 2009 Indy 500 winner ran wide into the exit of Turn 4, crumpling the right side of his Team Penske Dallara-Honda before continuing down the stretch of the font straight and coming to a stop at the end of the pit wall. The 2006 Motegi winner will join Hideki Mutoh on the last row.

Once the cleanup was completed, the third Japanese driver in the field, Kosuke Matsuura, achieved a 197.921mph in his Conquest Racing car, followed by oval specialist Ed Carpenter in his Vision Racing machine.

Moraes wasn’t seriously challenged for pole by nine of the last ten drivers remaining, but it was the last qualifier, 2008 IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon, that prevented the youngster from growing comfortable with his first series pole.

Dixon’s first timed lap was the fastest of the 23 cars – a 202.010 followed by a 202.067, another 202.010 and a 202.036 for an average of 202.031.

As the Ganassi and Penske organizations fight for the 2009 driver’s title, Castroneves’ qualifying miscue could not have come at a worse time. With Dixon and Franchitti starting first and third, points leader Briscoe will start fourth, minus the help from his teammate. While the Target duo will be pushing for the win, Penske Racing will have to commit Castroneves to an alternate pit strategy to try and leapfrog the three-time Indy 500 winner to the front of the field. Taking points away from the Ganassi cars is Helio’s sole mission at Motegi.

For Dixon, his pole could spell even more trouble for Briscoe, as the two-time series champion is renown for making better fuel mileage than anyone else in IndyCar racing. If the race stays mostly green, look for Dixon to stretch his tank at least one lap further than the Penske cars, and possibly over Franchitti. Depending on the timing of a yellow, it could give Dixon an advantage his championship rivals won’t be able to recover from.

Beyond the unexpected pace of Moraes, Newman/Haas/Lanigan impressed in qualifying, placing Rahal in fifth and Oriol Servia, in his last race for the team, in seventh. Of the other notables, Dale Coyne Racing showed improvement in their oval program with Justin Wilson putting the Z-Line Designs Dallara-Honda in ninth.

Andretti-Green Racing suffered yet another disappointing qualifying session, placing only Danica Patrick in the top-10. Tony Kanaan’s qualifying position of 14th came at the expense of teammate Marco Andretti who starts 15th. TK’s first three laps showed the 2004 series champion to be behind Andretti, but a strong fourth lap moved him ahead by a scant .003mph. Kanaan's efforts would be for naught after his 7-Eleven car failed post-qualifying technical inspection. He was moved to the rear of the field.

Stanton Barrett returned to Team 3G after Jaques Lazier took his place on the ovals throughout most of summer, and after qualifying last -- nearly 12mph off of Dixon’s pole speed and 6mph off of the next slowest qualifier -- the stuntman-turned-racecar driver is a prime candidate to be yanked from the 1.52-mile oval before he’s overrun by the leaders.
