2006 IRL Track Previews

Post by mlittle » Fri Feb 17, 2006 1:09 pm

With about 6 weeks before the season opener in Homestead, here is a brief description of the 14 venues that the Indy Racing League will visit in its' 11th season of competition.....

Round 1--Homestead/Miami Speedway, Homestead, Fla.
1.5 mile variable degree(18-20 degree) banked asphalt oval
Previous pole and race winners.....
2001:Jeff Ward/Sam Hornish, Jr.
2002:Sam Hornish, Jr./Sam Hornish, Jr.
2003:Tony Kanaan/Scott Dixon
2004:Buddy Rice/Sam Hornish, Jr.
2005:Tomas Scheckter/Dan Wheldon

This track is a "champions' track", not in that it's the season finale, but in that of the 5 years the series has visited this site, built on the former grounds of Homestead Air Force Base, the driver who has won the race here(Hornish, Jr in 2001-2002, Dixon in 2003 and Wheldon in 2005) has gone on to win the series title at the end of the season. With 18-20 degrees of variable banking in the turns, drivers have several grooves or lanes that they can use during the race. It's a horsepower track, and even with a sole engine supplier, whichever teams can get their cars up to speed quickly will usually be at the front late in the race.

Round 2-Streets of St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Fla.
1.8+ mile temporary street & airport circuit
Previous pole/race winners....
2005:Bryan Herta/Dan Wheldon

This is a hybrid circuit, with part of it on the property of Alfred Whitted Field and the rest on the streets of St. Pete. This track was the IRL's first foray into road racing, and it was a successful debut. It also saw the debut of the IRL's "Firestone Shootout"; after qualfiying, the top-6 get one last, 10-minute shot at the pole.

Round 3-Twin Ring Motegi, Motegi, Japan
1.5 mile low-banked asphalt oval
Previous pole/race winners.....
2003:Scott Dixon/Scott Sharp
2004:Dan Wheldon/Dan Wheldon
2005:Sam Hornish, Jr./Dan Wheldon

This is a unique track, the Twin Ring Motegi, in that it's almost an Asian version of NASCAR's Darlington Speedway.....egg-shaped, with turns 1-2 longer than 3-4; cars stay glued to the bottom since the track occasionally "loses" the high groove. This track also serves as a last chance before Indy to establish oneself as a championship contender. Do well here, and the momentum will likely help you going into the month of May.

Round 4-Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Speedway, Ind.
2.5 mile, low-banked(9 degree) asphalt oval
Previous pole/race winners......
(listed in the 89th Indianapolis 500 thread.)

The Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Whoever coined that phrase wasn't kidding; it is exactly that. For 89 years, drivers have been coming to the corner of 16th and Georgetown to compete in one of the world's premier sporting events. To win here is to become an instant legend, one whose visage becomes a part of the Borg-Warner Trophy and who'll be talked about for years to come. It's the modern-day version of High Noon in the Old West, only instead of 6-shooters men(and women) bring 650-hp, fire-breathing IndyCars to the track. It's still in the same shape that it was built in in the early 20th century, and it's still in that shape; 5/8th mile straights, plus four turns and two "short chutes"=2.5 miles. Originally paved with bricks(hence the moniker, the Brickyard), it was paved soon afterward. But whether it's the Indianapolis 500(IRL), the Brickyard 400(NASCAR Nextel Cup) or the United States Grand Prix(Formula 1), every driver who comes to this hallowed place has one goal at race's end.....to be the one who gets to "kiss the bricks" as the winner.

That covers rounds 1-4 of the 2006 IRL IndyCar Series season. As the season apporaches I'll covers the remaining rounds, giving readers a little bit of a glance at the venues that the series visits. Have fun, and enjoy! 8) 8)

Rds. 5-8, 2006 IRL Track Previews

Rd. 5-Watkins Glen International, Chemung, N.Y.
3.34-mile natural terrain road course
Previous pole/race winners......
2005-Helio Castroneves/Scott Dixon

For the first time since 1997, the Indy Racing League will travel to a place other than Texas for the season's first race after the Brickyard. This track has a little bit of everything to throw at the drivers.......sharp corners, a lightning-fast esses section, a Spa-style bus-stop chicane, a long carousel turn, and several overtaking possibilites. By now the championship fight will be in full swing, and drivers will be using any and all the monentum they've gotten from Indy to propel them forward.

Rd. 6-Texas Motor Speedway, Arlington, Texas
1.5-mile high banked asphalt oval
Previous pole/race winners........
1997-Tony Stewart/Arie Luyendyk
1998(1)-Tony Stewart/Billy Boat
1998(2)-Billy Boat/John Paul, Jr.
1999(1)-Mark Dismore/Scott Goodyear
1999(2)-Greg Ray/Mark Dismore
2000(1)-Buddy Lazier/Scott Sharp
2000(2)-Greg Ray/Scott Goodyear
2001(1)-Mark Dismore/Scott Sharp
2001(2)-Sam Hornish, Jr./Sam Hornish, Jr.
2002(1)-Tomas Scheckter/Jeff Ward
2002(2)-Vitor Meira/Sam Hornish, Jr.
2003(1)-Tomas Scheckter/Al Unser, Jr.
2003(2)-Gil de Ferran/Gil de Ferran
2004(1)-Dario Franchitti/Tony Kanaan
2004(2)-Helio Castroneves/Helio Castroneves
2005-Tomas Scheckter/Tomas Scheckter

"It's our Talledega." IRL vet Scott Sharp said that during the weekly teleconference last year prior to the 2005 race, and he wasn't kidding. This place is, by far, the toughest track in the series. Speeds range over 215-220 mph., the cars travel in packs two-three wide, and just one little slipup can end your day very quickly. It's a track that has crowned several series champions over the years with wins(Hornish, Jr. in 2001-2002) and has sent champions into retirement with victory(de Ferran, 2003). This race marks the busiest part of the season, and if the Glen didn't mark the beginning of the points battle, this place does.

Rd. 7-Richmond International Raceay, Henrico Co., Va.
0.75-mile low-banked asphalt oval
Previous pole/race winners......
2001-Jaques Lazier/Buddy Lazier
2002-Gil de Ferran/Sam Hornish, Jr.
2003-Scott Dixon/Scott Dixon
2004-Helio Castroneves/Dan Wheldon
2005-Sam Hornish, Jr./Helio Castroneves

The bullring. The name popularly given to RIR, set just outside of Richmond, Va along the banks of the James River has seen the series visit since 2001. It's a tricky short-oval; laps here are generally in the 16 sec. range and the drivers are turning left for 12-12.5 secs. of each lap. The g-loads they face are high for such a short-oval, in the 4+ G range. For most drivers who come here, simply surviving what can be an attrition-filled race is victory enough.

Rd. 8-Kansas Speedway, Kansas City, Kansas
1.5-mile banked asphalt oval
Previous pole/race winners.......
2001-Scott Sharp/Eddie Cheever, Jr.
2002-Tomas Scheckter/Airton Dare
2003-Scott Dixon/Bryan Herta
2004-Buddy Rice/Buddy Rice
2005-Danica Patrick/Tony Kanaan

Set on the Kansas side of Kansas City, this track has seen some pretty amazing things, from Patrick's first-ever pole in 2005, to the sneak-away victory Dare stole from Hornish, Jr. back in 2002. Although this is a horsepower track, the winning drivers here have always found a way to take even the most ill-tempered cars to victory lane. As this race marks the beginning of the second half of the IRL season, teams and drivers have one overriding goal at hand--to win the series championship. Doing well here will go a long way to fulfilling that dream.

Rds. 9-11, 2006 IRL IndyCar Track Previews

Post by mlittle » Wed Mar 01, 2006 10:32 am

Rd. 9-Nashville Superspeedway, Lebanon, Tenn.
1.33-mile moderately banked concrete oval
Previous pole/race winners......
2001:Greg Ray/Buddy Lazier
2002:Billy Boat/Alex Barron
2003:Scott Dixon/Gil de Ferran
2004:Buddy Rice/Tony Kanaan
2005:Tomas Scheckter/Dario Franchitti

On the outskirts of Music City USA, a/k/a Nashville, Tenn. is Nashville Superspeedway, one of two concrete tracks(the other being Milwaukee) on the schedule. There the similarity ends; the concrete here is bumpy and abrasive and will test drivers, especially entering/exiting the turns. Speed's not the important factor here; mechanical grip is. Find it, and you could find yourself in victory lane here.

Rd. 10-The Milwaukee Mile @ the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, W. Allis, Wisc.
1-mile flat-banked concrete oval(w/asphalt patching in the turns)
Previous pole/race winners......
2004:Vitor Meira/Dario Franchitti
2005:Sam Hornish, Jr./Sam Hornish, Jr.

Like the Champ Car race, the IRL's drivers will find that they need cast-iron nerves in order to master the tricky, flat oval. This track harkens back to the days of the roadsters and NA motorsports' long past. With the championship fight in full swing now, those cast-iron nerves come in very handy.

Rd. 11-Michigan International Speedway, Brooklyn, Mich.
2-mile moderately banked asphalt oval
Previous pole/race winners......
2002:Tomas Scheckter/Tomas Scheckter
2003:Tomas Scheckter/Alex Barron
2004:Tony Kanaan/Buddy Rice
2005:Bryan Herta/Bryan Herta

Home to NA motorsports events since the late 1960's, Michigan is a pure speed track; horsepower reigns supreme here(after all, we are a short jump from the auto capital of the US, Detroit!) and the drivers who find the edge of the horsepower envelope will surely be at the front.

Rds. 12-14

Post by mlittle » Thu Mar 16, 2006 2:47 pm

Rd. 12--Kentucky Speedway, Sparta, Ky.
1.5-mile moderately-banked asphalt oval
Previous pole/race winners......
2000-Scott Goodyear/Buddy Lazier
2001-Scott Sharp/Buddy Lazier
2002-Sarah Fisher/Felipe Giaffone
2003-Sam Hornish, Jr./Sam Hornish, Jr.
2004-Buddy Rice/Adrian Fernandez
2005-Danica Patrick/Scott Sharp

By now, the focus is on the frontrunners as the series makes its' way to western Kentucky and the bluegrass country, to what is arguably one of the trickiest 1.5-mile ovals in North America. Here, drivers need both mech. and aero-grip to be fast here. Coupled w/the track notoriously bumpy surface, and it can provide for some wicked fast racing.

Rd. 13-Infineon Raceay, Sonoma, Cal.
2.3+-mile natural terrain road course
Previous pole/race winners......
2005-Ryan Briscoe/Tony Kanaan

Round 13 sees the IndyCar Series make, for this year, its' lone West Coast stop, to Sonoma wine country and Infineon Raceway. Last year saw some interesting things......a near-fight btwn. two of the comeptitors, the winner doing push-ups in victory lane, etc. This track's a pressure-cooker, too, with its's sweeping turns, a twisty esses-sect., a neg.-camber carousel, and, like the rival CCWS, a twin-bill w/the Rolex Series.

Rd. 14-Chicagoland Speedway, Joliet, Ill.
1.5-mile moderately-banked asphalt oval
Previous pole/race winners.......
2001-Jaques Lazier/Jaques Lazier
2002-Sam Hornish, Jr./Sam Hornish, Jr.
2003-Richie Hearn/Sam Hornish, Jr.
2004-Helio Castroneves/Adrian Fernandez
2005-Danica Patrick/Dan Wheldon

The season finale for 2005 brings us to the land of the Blues Brothers, Chicgaoland Speedway. The 1.5-mile oval saw one of the scariest wrecks in recent memory, but it also saw one of the better races IMHO of the 2005 season, and for the first time in its' history, the track will host the season finale. By now, all the drivers just want to make it to the end, fight 300 more miles and then be thankful they survived another season.
