Da Matta out of ICU, continues to recover

Post by mlittle » Mon Aug 21, 2006 12:45 pm

ChampCar officials released a brief statement Saturday concerning the health of RuSport driver Cristiano da Matta, who was injured at Road America back at the beginning of August. ChampCar Chief Medical Officer Dr. Chris Pinderski, who has been in continuose contact w/medical staff at Theda Clark Medical Center, said the following........
Cristiano is still making daily progress while recovering from injuries suffered two weeks ago. Yesterday, he was transferred out of the intensive care unit; we will now begin the process of planning for longer-term rehabilitation which is necessary after significant head injuries.
Continuing updates will be available as they are announced. From the North American Motorsports desk, let's all continue wishing Shorty the best as he recovers from his injuries.

Successful 2-day test for 2nd-generation racer.....

Post by mlittle » Fri Sep 15, 2006 2:35 pm

Besides the continued testing of the new Panoz DP01 ChampCar, there was additional testing activity going on, as Atlantic Championship racer Graham Rahal, so of 3-time CART and 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal, completed a 2-day test w/Newman-Haas Racing, completing over 360 miles of testing Wednesday and Thursday(fastest time on Wed. was 52.4 secs., a 51.5 sec. time on Thurs.). Although Thursday's session was ended early due to lingering showers over Sebring, both Rahal and Newman-Haas officials were pleased with the results. Here are some quotes from those involved...

Graham Rahal, Atlantic Championship driver(MiJack-Conquest):
Everything went really well. I was able to go 9/10ths' faster (today) than yesterday. It was nice to improve. Everything from the data from Sebastien and Bruno's test there told us the areas we could improve and we were able to so I am happy with the progress. Unfortunately the rain ended the test early but we were able to practice some pitstops. To improve made me happy and ended the test on a positive note. I think I like the car a little different than they are used to; I was fairly easy on the rear tires so they could tune the car more. I wasn't going to push the tires too much and force an error but certainly it worked to my advantage. The team were great to work with and I hope I can work with them again in the future.
Brian Lisles, general manager, Newman-Haas Racing:
The team had two good test days with Graham. He learns fast and gives good feedback which is the mark of a good race driver. He was able to run competitive lap times and worked well with the team. We believe he has a great future.
