A lap around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve..........

Post by mlittle » Fri Aug 03, 2007 5:00 pm

During Thursday's practice sessions in the runup to tomorrow's inaugural Montreal 400k at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Michael Shank Racing drivers Oswaldo Negri, Jr., Mark Patterson and James Pew described a lap at the historic Montreal track..................

Pew:
After you cross the start/finish line, you prepare for the first left hander, going down the gears and using all the apex curbing you can. A quick shot of gas and then down a gear, maybe two for the quick right hander that follows as you try to stay as close to the curbs all the way around. The track goes up slightly here before the exit of the corner.
Patterson:
That second turn has no grip and if not handled well, opens up a neat passing opportunity going into the next right hander.
Pew:
Next is a quick right-hander; hard braking and back down the gears and over the apex curbs. Then there's another immediate direction change back to the left. There are curbs at the track out there and it's just inches to the wall right there. Then you run back up the gears before the next right hander--a sweeping, very fast blind corner.
Patterson:
Hard braking into a 90-degree left hander, sweeping right over a white repair patch onto a more gradual opening right turn that spits you out onto a left-side wall at full throttle. There's an 18-inch strip of grass between the track and the wall--more than enough margin for error. Up through the gears towards the Olympus bridge past the 200, then 100 board, down through the gears past to 50 board. It's dark underneath the bridge, but there's blinding sunlight as you exit the bridge as you go sharply through another chicane. Bang--jump the right-side and then left-side curbs roughly. Like before, there's an 18-inch strip of grass between the track and the wall. This leads to the sweeping, curved Portland-like straight where Kubica crashed during the F1 race. Heavy braking and down through the gears as you approach the best passing spot on the track.
Negri:
One thing notable about this track is that, because this track's used so infrequently, it changes a lot during the weekend; you have to keep up with how it changes. Getting out of the hairpin is very important; getting the power down as soon as possible is very important because it leads to a very long straight, longer than when we raced at Long Beach. Very straightforward here until you get to the tricky "Wall of Champions" corner. I think it's going to be a very good spot for overtaking, but it's also the most unforgiving and dangerous portion of the track. There is no runoff, and if you catch the curbs wrong, you are going to hit the wall, no question about it. From there, it's back to start/finish and you begin another lap......

8 in a row for the Gainsco boys..............

Post by mlittle » Fri Aug 10, 2007 10:06 am

.........8 consecutive poles in Rolex competition, that is, for Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney, who will start on point in Friday's Crown Royal 200 @ the Glen, where for the first of two consecutive races, the Daytona Prototypes will get the track to themselves, giving them a chance to stretch their proverbial legs.

Top-5 from qualifying at the Glen this afternoon......................................
DP-1} Jon Fogarty, Alex Gurney--#99 Gainsco Pontiac/Riley, 1:07.020 sec*
DP-2} Nic Jonsson, Colin Braun--#75 Krohn Racing Pontiac/Riley, 1:07.645 sec
DP-3} Memo Gidley, Max Angelelli--#10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley, 1:07.687 sec
DP-4} Mark Wilkins, Brian Frisselle--#61 Barrick Gold/RBC Centura Lexus/Riley, 1:07.761 sec
DP-5} Christian Fittipaldi, Antonio Garcia--#39 Crown Royal Pontiac/Fabcar, 1:07.858 sec

*--unlike the Sahlen's 6 Hrs. @ the Glen, which used the "long course", the Crown Royal 200 will use the "short course" which doesn't utilize the boot section of Watkins Glen International
