12 Hours of Sebring, Fast Facts-part 2

Post by mlittle » Mon Mar 10, 2008 4:40 am

Evolution of the Sebring Circuit.........................
Although the Sebring International Raceway circuit is located on the grounds of the former Hendricks AFB in Sebring, Fla., the track layout has changed over the past 5+ decades..........
~~1952 to 1983, 5.2 miles: during this time the track included the two long airfield runways; the only major change was the elimination of the Webster Turn in 1967 w/the Green Park Chicane
~~1983, 4.75 miles: a new asphalt section was included as the track bypassed part of one runway, deleting almost a half-mile from the track length
~~1984-1986, 4.86 miles: expansion of the paddock area along the main/pit straight meant pushing the Ullmann straight out further than it had previously been
~~1987-1990, 4.11 miles: deletion of the N/S runway and an additional asphalt section from turn 1 through the esses, which were then replaced by a carousel-style turn
~~1991-1995, 3.7 miles: resurfacing and repaving of parts of the circuit took place during this time, including deleting the old turns 8 and 9 along with the prior Carousel
~~1996, 3.6 miles: relocation of the Fangio chicane closer to the hairpin shortened the track length by a tenth/mile
~~1997, 3.75 miles: due to FIA homolgation requirements prior to an FIA Sportscar Championship race, the entrance and exit of the Ullmann straight were reconfigured, adding just over .1 mile to the track...in addition, turn 17 was repaved with asphalt
~~1998-present, 3.7 miles: following the 1998 FIA sportscar race, the Hairpin was reconfigured into an esses-style turn...in addition, more repaving was done to parts of the circuit

Some random notes from a beautiful Sebring, Fla.....................

~~for the first time since 1972 someone with the last name of Andretti led at Sebring in the 12 Hours; then, it was Il Commendatore himself, Mario.......today, it was 'little ole Marco.......
~~2 hard hits........there were two big crashes so far in the 12 Hours....one involved the Aston Martin DBRS of Paul Drayton, who smashed the tirewalls exiting turn 1; the worst of the two involved an LMP-2 entry driven by Jean-Christophe Ravier, who spun hard off into the armco at turn 11; he was taken to a local hospital complaining of pain in his left shoulder
~~2 retirements of note.......one was the #6 Porsche RS Spyder of Penske Racing, out w/engine overheating; the other was the GT-2 Chev. Corvette C-6R1 of LG Motorsports, whose gearbox, to quote motorsports legend David Hobbs, "done blew up!"

How's this for expressing one's opinions?

Despite all the politics within IMSA and the ALMS, Audi AG, the parent company of Audi Sport North America, confirmed that they would compete in all 11 events of the 2008 American LeMans Series season "in spite of the restrictions placed upon the R10 TDI by series officials in contravention of the ACO regulations."

~~From the :wtf: category............................

~~Brake problems for the Audi's?
During an interview with Globecast Radio's Lindy Hall, Audi Motorsports' Director Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich mentioned that they were having problems with their brakes, namely that their brakes were going soft and that they had to replace the front brake discs twice in the first six hours......

Now why is this a :wtf: question...........I can understand having to change brake discs and having "soft" brakes at, say, LeMans, a 24 hr. race.......but to have them after only six hours at Sebring?
