Long Beach Test Notes

~~~NO PLACE LIKE LONG BEACH FOR BRABHAM
With memories of last year's last-lap pass for an LMP2 victory still fresh in his mind, David Brabham was the quickest driver in Thursday's test session for the Tequila Patron American Le Mans Series at Long Beach. Now in LMP1, Brabham's best time on the Long Beach circuit was a 1:14.226 (95.449 mph) in Patron Highcroft Racing's Acura ARX-02a.
Just as he did last season, Brabham will team with Scott Sharp in search of its second straight overall win in the American Le Mans Series. They were victorious two weeks ago at St. Petersburg.
The cars took part in two separate sessions with qualifying set for Friday afternoon.
Brabham, who set his time in the latter session, went 1.224 seconds quicker than Adrian Fernandez in the Lowe's Fernandez Racing Acura ARX-01b. Fernandez, who has a lengthy history at Long Beach from his CART days, is driving with Luis Diaz in the LMP2 entry that scored class wins at both Sebring and St. Petersburg. Acura held the top three spots of the day with Simon Pagenaud placing third in the de Ferran Motorsports Acura P1 entry that he will share with team owner Gil de Ferran. Pagenaud was the only one of the top three to post his time in the first session.
Intersport Racing's Lola B06/10-AER of Jon Field, Clint Field and Chapman Ducote was third in P1.
Dyson Racing's two Mazda-powered Lola B09/86 coupes were second and third in P2. The entry of Butch Leitzinger and Marino Franchitti were quickest ahead of the sister car of Chris Dyson and Guy Smith.
Olivier Beretta was quickest in GT1 as Corvette Racing continued to prepare for its final American Le Mans Series race in the class. Beretta's time of 1:18.450 (90.310 mph) in the entry he will share with Oliver Gavin was 0.341 seconds better than the sister car of defending race winners Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen. Both cars set their quickest times in the second session.
Corvette Racing will transition to GT2 at Mid-Ohio in August, but not before campaigning the GT1 cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for a final time in June.
Jaime Melo was the fastest GT2 driver in Risi Competizione's Ferrari F430 GT that he will drive with Pierre Kaffer. Melo, who won here two years ago with Mika Salo, turned a lap of 1:21.334 (87.107 mph) to barely outpace Farnbacher Loles Racing's Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Wolf Henzler and Dirk Werner by a scant 0.06 seconds. Both times were from the second session.
Flying Lizard Motorsports' Porsche of Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmeister was third in class but fastest in the first session at 1:21.992 (86.408 mph).
Long Beach Test Quotes
Post by mlittle » Sat Apr 18, 2009 12:39 pm
David Brabham, Patron Highcroft Racing
Acura ARX-02a (LMP1)
"We made some pretty good improvements during the session. We don't have a lot of time here so you have to be sure you get it right. We have some direction for tomorrow so that is the main thing that we really needed to achieve today. Last year was a huge race for us here; it really got our season going. There is a real difference between thinking you can win and knowing you can. That was the case at Long Beach last year and we now enter this weekend with a win already under our belt at St. Pete."
Pierre Kaffer, Risi Competizione
Ferrari F430 GT (GT2)
"It was good. I took the Long Beach circuit from the internet. When you only have a small amount of practice time you have to compromise on some things. It worked very well, I have to say. Long Beach is a special track and it is different from St. Petersburg. I really enjoy the street courses. Long Beach has the rhythm on the corners. It is not as tight as St. Pete. It is quick with more bumps."
Gil de Ferran, de Ferran Motorsports
Acura ARX-02a (LMP1)
"It was very slippery. I guess it's normal on the first day of a street circuit, and we are just working through the tires and trying to understand the tires and have the best setup for the race."
Johnny O'Connell, Corvette Racing
Corvette C6.R (GT1)
"We are excited and sad. It is the end of a very special era. This has been an amazing car. If there was one team that set the bar for other cars in the American Le Mans Series to emulate, it's Corvette Racing. There are amazing teams in GT2 and great drivers in Ferrari, Porsche and BMW. In 2010, all eyes are going to be on GT2. If you think about it, it's a cool change. It used to be prototype, prototype, prototype. Now it's GT2. This is where you want to be."
Bryan Sellers, Team Falken Tire
Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (GT2)
(On preparing for Long Beach on an iRacing simulator) "The simulator is a big help. The track looks the same of course. The biggest difference is that there is risk involved here. On the simulator there is no risk but you can't simulate that. Today has been strictly about getting as much seat time for myself and Dominic, and doing as many laps as possible. But things are going OK so far."
Joey Hand, BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team
BMW M3, GT2
"I hope we can turn it around this week. I brought the whole family with me, so hopefully that will help. I got a fortune cookie a couple of days ago that said 'Your talent is going to be needed this week.' I certainly hope it is. I've also grown a goatee; that's my rally cap. There is really not a lot you can do about the little gremlins that have been cropping up on our end. We think this is our week."
Richard Westbrook, T-Mobile® VICI Racing
Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (GT2)
"I'm excited to be a part of this program. Everyone is working really well, and so is the car. We want to complete the race with bright plans for the future. The pace is OK right now. I am new to the track. Johannes (Stuck) is new to the track so there is a lot of learning. You have to get on with it. We're not here to tell each other jokes. We're here to work and to head in the same direction."
Mike Lewis, Autocon Motorsports
Lola B06/10-AER (LMP1)
"I drove the car at Miller Motorsports Park a couple of weeks ago but this is the first race for me this year. It's a lot of work for cars like this go fast around here. They weren't exactly built for these kinds of tight and nimble street courses. We should be able to do more at Utah."
David Brabham whipped his Acura ARX-02ax around the 1.97- mile, 11-turn Long Beach street course at a record speed of 98.912 miles per hour to take the pole position for Saturday's Tequila Patron American LeMans Series race.
"Long Beach is a pretty special place what with all the great derives that have raced here," Brabham said after his record run. "I put a quick lap down early and we had a sizable gap on Gil (de Ferran), but he got close at the end. To see how close it got was pretty amazing and to beat him is a quite an accomplishment."
Brabham and Sharp co-drove to victory at St. Petersburg two weeks ago and Brabham said winning further inspired his team and boosted their confidence going into this event. "To think you can win and then to get a win under you belt is an inspiration to you and your team," Brabham commented. De Ferran was second-fastest at 98.813 mph in an identical Acura ARX-02a. The hard-charging driver spun his Acura toward the end of qualifying, and timed runs ended at that point in time.
Adrian Fernandez was third-fastest overall and topped the P2 field to take qualifying honors. His one-lap speed in an Acura ARX-01B was 96.874 mph. "It has been a great year for us," Fernandez said. "We are focused on finishing races this season, so we limited our qualification laps to six. Near the end of qualifying, the Dyson Racing Mazda's got close to us, and with that team's experience, they are going to be quite competitive." Chris Dyson and Butch Leitzinger timed fourth and fifth overall and second and third, respectively, in the P2 category.
Olivier Beretta gave Chevrolet Corvette another GT1 pole position in the manufacturer's last race before its transition to the GT2 class. His speed was 90.887 mph. "I raced against this team back in 1999 and I knew it was the team of the future. I am just glad to be with them," he said.
Jaime Melo and his Ferrari 430 Berlinetta GT gained the GT2 pole position with a speed of 88.437 mph. He took the qualifying honors for the second consecutive race and for the 14th time in his career. Twenty-one cars qualified for Saturday's race.
(from ALMS Communications)
~~~In an announcement that defies the current and challenging economic climate, the American Le Mans Series added yet another marquee team Friday with the addition of Rocketsports Racing and Jaguar to the GT2 class. The East Lansing, Michigan-based team reunites with the Jaguar brand by entering a Jaguar XKR for a partial season in 2009 with a full-season championship effort in 2010.

The announcement came Friday at the Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach, Round 3 of the 2009 championship. Earlier this season, the Series added BMW Rahal Letterman’s two-car effort to its grid.

Scott Atherton: “Not only does the Series add another prestigious automobile brand to its already world-class lineup of manufacturers, but the fact that this addition occurs during such a challenging time in our industry makes the announcement truly significant."

“It has been difficult to be out of competitive racing for nearly a year,” said RSR team owner Paul Gentilozzi. “We are most fortunate to be able to return to what we know - winning sports car championships. In particular, winning them in Jaguars. We haven’t spent our time idly; we’ve focused on engineering and construction of the Jaguar XKR. The luxury of time that we traditionally don’t have in this process has been a great asset. We feel like our work with both the American Le Mans Series and the ACO will give us a car that is number one: competitive on the track, number two: representative of Jaguar’s racing history, and number three: economically viable for customers in the GT2 series around the world.”

RSR will be entering the American Le Mans Series with Jaguar as a technical and marketing partner. Jaguar has provided vital engineering, information and support to assist the team in the homologation and construction process. Construction of the Jaguar XKR is near completion at the RSR facility. A parallel engine development process is also underway for the new AJ-133 direct injected 5-liter normally aspirated engine. The company’s plan is to begin testing and development in June and enter the Series mid-summer. RSR will be building at least three XKRs this year and will have cars available for customer use in 2010.

“The addition of Rocketsports Racing and the Jaguar XKR speaks volumes about the status of the American Le Mans Series,” said Scott Atherton, President and CEO of the world’s leading sports car series. “Not only does the Series add another prestigious automobile brand to its already world-class lineup of manufacturers, but the fact that this addition occurs during such a challenging time in our industry makes the announcement truly significant. Paul Gentilozzi is one of the most experienced and qualified people in motorsports and his decision to bring Rocketsports and the Jaguar brand into the American Le Mans Series at this time is the best endorsement we could ask for.

“Looking back over the decades, I believe Jaguar’s finest hours in motorsports have occurred in sports car racing. The timing of its return couldn’t be better. Jaguar can introduce, develop and showcase its technologies and immediately link the DNA of its racecar to the XKR in the showroom in a way that no other form of motorsport can match. We are very proud to be welcoming Paul Gentilozzi, Rocketsports and the Jaguar brand as the newest stakeholders of the American Le Mans Series, and we look forward to seeing them on the track in the very near future.”

Rocketsports has a history of success in sports car racing with 17 IMSA victories and a class win at Sebring. The XKR race car is based on the successful Jaguar XKR Aluminum chassis. Combining stampings, forgings and extrusions, fastened by special rivets and high-strength adhesives, the Jaguar-designed structure offers an excellent platform on which to build a championship-winning racecar. Added to this structure are steel roll cage and reinforcing members providing safety and stiffness in the face of the challenges presented by the demanding circuits and competition in the American Le Mans Series. The all-aluminum AJ-133 powerplant breathing through ACO mandated restrictors will be tuned to last 24 grueling hours at Le Mans and power the Jaguar XKR through the historic hills of Road Atlanta during Petit Le Mans. The carbon fiber body optimizes air flow as permitted in the ACO rules, while also maintaining the design spirit of the beautiful XKR production car.

Rocketsports, Inc. previous competed in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) resulting in 17 victories, including a GTS class win at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1992. Running an Oldsmobile Cutlass in 1992, Paul Gentilozzi was the runner-up in the Drivers’ Championships in the GTS class and the team won the GTO Drivers’ Championship and the Manufacturers’ Championship (Oldsmobile). In 1993, Rocketsports clinched the GTS Manufacturers’ Championship (Oldsmobile). A 1994 effort with Cunningham/Nissan resulted in an overall victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

While RSR and Jaguar may be new to American Le Mans Series competition, they both have a rich history and heritage of performance in the motorsports industry. The same is to be said about their relationship together. Jaguar was re-introduced to the Trans-Am Series by Gentilozzi. In their tenure Rocketsports, Inc. had 66 starts, 31 of those resulted in Rocketsports team wins with an additional four victories by chassis/customer cars. This led to five Manufacturers’ and five Drivers’ Championships from 2000-2006 with Paul Gentilozzi, Scott Pruett and Klaus Graf. Rocketsports also earned a pole and victory (GTS Class) in a Jaguar XKR in 2002 at the famed 24 Hours of Daytona.

The Rocketsports/Jaguar relationship is also significant off track. From 2002-2004, Rocketsports, Inc. built two concept cars which included a racier X-Type and the most powerful road-going Jaguar convertible ever - the 550 horsepower XK-RS. In November 2008, RSR undertook a secret speed trial, taking a 2010 Jaguar XFR to the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The XFR achieved a stunning top speed of 225.675 mph – making it the fastest production Jaguar ever. In the vein of Rocketsports’ work on production Jaguars, RSR is developing high performance aftermarket components for the XKR and newly revealed XFR.

(quoting AP reports from Long Beach)
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP)—Co-drivers Gil de Ferran and Simon Pagenaud raced to their first American Le Mans Series victory Saturday.

The duo won a duel of new Acura prototype LMP1 sports cars, holding off a car driven by St. Petersburg winners David Braham and Scott Sharp until a full-course yellow for a car fire forced the 100-minute race on the temporary street circuit in downtown Long Beach to end under caution.

Former open-wheel star de Ferran, in the car at the finish, came out of retirement midway through last season to start his own ALMS team. He and Pagenaud did not win while racing in 2008 in the LMP2 category. Former Indianapolis 500 winner de Ferran’s last victory came in 2003 at Texas in his last IndyCar Series event.

There were only 6 minutes left in the race when a GT2 Corvette driven by Boris Said burst into flames and filled with smoke. The veteran racer scrambled out of the cockpit and across the track as safety workers sprayed the car with fire extinguishers. Said was not injured, but ALMS officials were not able to clean up the mess in time to restart the race.

Brabham cut de Ferran’s lead from 16 to 9 seconds before the fire brought out the full-course caution. Mechanical problems took the new de Ferran car out of races earlier this season at Sebring and St. Petersburg, but the Acura ARX 02a was flawless Saturday on the 1.97-mile, 11-turn circuit.

A LMP2 Acura co-driven by Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz finished third and won its class for the third straight race this season.
