Well it looks as though Loeb has sewn up the championship. The big news is that Chris Atkinson got his first podium in the rally of Japan. He competed in this rally last year which gave him a little bit more confidence.

The 25 year old is the second Aussie to get a podium finish in the WRC ever. The last was Ross Dunkerton who placed third in Rally New Zealand in 1992.

There are big things ahead for this boy. It is only his first season in the WRC.
Ok, Lewis may win the WDC in 07, but Sato will beat him in 08.

My understanding is that he had to produce a high finish in this rally to keep his seat for next season. His bosses have been impressed with his outright speed, in unfamiliar rallies, but expected a strong run, and a finish here, where he has competed before. They are said to be mightily pleased with him.

It would have been good for him to finish in the top ten again, but this would please them no end. Should be interesting to see how he goes next year. He will at least have one year of experience to put behind him.

So she wants to camp anywhere you want then. As long as it is in a Hilton. Not Paris of course.

Gronholm wins '06 opener in Monte Carlo

Post by mlittle » Mon Jan 23, 2006 1:15 pm

For veteran WRC racer Marcus Gronholm, it was a good start to the 2006 FIA World Rally Championship, as he captured his first asphalt-rally win(19th of his career), while reigning champion Sebastien Loeb rallied from a DNF during one of the stages to take 2nd on the podium. In his debut for the "Blue Oval"(Ford), Gronholm essentially crusied to the win, especially when Loeb crashed during SS-6 and was all but eliminated from the rally. However, WRC rules changes implemented this year allowed the Frenchman to return to action(albeit w/a 5-min. penalty) and Loeb scratched and clawed his way from the back of the field to 2nd. Meanwhile, Peugeot's Toni Gardemeister, still looking for a full-time ride this year, collected the last podium spot, finishing third. Here are the top ten results as follows......

1}M. Gronholm, Ford....................4 hrs., 11 mins., 43.9 secs.
2}S. Loeb, Citroen(P)...................-1:01.8 secs.
3}T. Gardemeister, Peugeot(P).....-1:1:23.1 secs.
4}M. Stohl, Peugeot(P).................-1:42.3 secs.
5}S. Sarrazin, Subaru..................-3:20.2 secs.
6}C. Atkinson, Subaru.................-5:02.4 secs.
7}M. Hirvonen, Ford....................-6:29.5 secs.
8}D. Sordo, Citroen(P)................-7:15.2 secs.
9}X. Pons, Citroen(P)..................-7:42.9 secs.
10}G. Panizzi, Skoda..................-9:29.8 secs.
