2019 Testing

Post by cmlean » Tue Feb 19, 2019 2:38 pm

Day 1 of testing for 2019 commenced at Catalunya.

Code: Select all

Driver Team Time Tyres
Sebastian Vettel Ferrari	1:18.161	Soft
Carlos Sainz McLaren	1:18.558	Supersoft
Romain Grosjean Haas 1:19.159	Soft
Max Verstappen Red Bull	1:19.426	Soft
Kimi Raikkonen Alfa Romeo	1:19.462	Soft
Daniil Kvyat Toro Rosso	1:19.635	Supersoft
Sergio Perez Racing Point	1:19.944	Soft
Valtteri Bottas Mercedes	1:20.127	Medium
Lewis Hamilton Mercedes	1:20.135	Medium
Nico Hulkenberg Renault	1:20.980	Medium
Daniel Ricciardo Renault	1:20.983	Medium
Reliability seemed to be in evidence for all teams.
A couple of spins into the gravel traps and a fuel pressure failure for Romain Grosjean in his Haas.
Williams will not have their 2019 contender ready until at least Wednesday and are already behind the 8 ball.

I have taken a liberty in naming the tyre compounds
C1: Hard
C2: Medium
C3: Soft
C4: Supersoft
C5: Ultrasoft

So, what have we learnt after the first 4 days of testing.
1. Ferrari look like they have the car for 2019
2. Williams are behind the 8 ball having given up 2days of testing to all teams
3. Mercedes seem to be playing their cards close to their chest. Maybe a bit of understeer to be dialed out.
4. Toro Rosso, Renault, Alfa Romeo and Haas are in the ballpark.
5. Red Bull...... I'm not sure.....Lots of laps but they are holding some back.
6. Racing Point never show their full potential in testing. Perez though is the only one on the pace.
7. McLaren are improving but are not quite there.

Next week, we are back at Catalunya for the next installment of pre-season testing where the times will tumble and new bits will appear on cars for assessment.

In the morning session, Sebastian Vettel stuffed his Ferrari into the turn 3 wall. Driver is ok, the car was a little sad.

So, what have we learned over 8 days of testing?
1. Ferrari have a really nice car and will probably set the pace.
2. Mercedes seemed to be also now on the pace with their revised aero.
3. Red Bull, Renault, Toro Rosso and probably McLaren are all bunched together.
4. Haas, Racing Point and maybe Alfa Romeo as their own group.
5 Williams are at the tail. Take this with a grain of salt as they did miss a significant amount of testing and are an improvement on 2018.

Roll on Melbourne.....
