When those years start counting 1 ... 2 ... 3 .... 4 .... 5 .... 6 ...

Champions either jump into a competitive car straight away or a year or two later at most. There are exceptions of course

But:

Villeneuve - Straight into Williams
Alonso - Minardi then Renault

Champion material
Raikkonen - Sauber then McLaren

Future champions (if Alonso lets them )
Rosberg - Will move to a competitive team if Williams don't deliver
Kovalainen - Straight into Renault - Speculative but true
