Ferrari issued the following statement on Felipe Massa's condition

Felipe Massa has undergone surgery this afternoon at the AEK hospital in Budapest and the outcome of the procedure was positive. Now, Felipe will remain under observation in intensive care.

An update on his condition will be issued late tomorrow morning.

Ed wrote:Felipe Massa was hit by debris from Rubens Barrichello's car. He was knocked out and drove straight into the barriers. Reports that he is injured but his injuries are not life threatining.
Luckily he was on his inlap so he wasn't going too fast.

I just watched video from this incident. It is chilling. The only way you can tell Massa is unconscious, beside the fact that he makes no attempt to make the corner, is that his head bobs forward strangely. Thank goodness all drivers use the "Hans Device" otherwise, he may have spinal cord damage from crashing straight into the wall at unbated speed.

After undergoing an operation yesterday afternoon, Felipe Massa's condition remains stable and there were no further complications through the night. He will be given another CT scan today, which will provide more precise information.

Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton on his first win of the season. Starting from 4th that was an impressive result. Even if Alonso didn't retire with the wheel going off, it would have been difficult for him to catch Hamilton after his stop.
Kimi Raikkonen was also impressive finishing in second place.
Mark Webber finished third and has now moved ahead of Vettel and closed the gap to Jenson Button in the championship but after setting the fastest lap of the race, one wonders if chosing the soft compound for the middle stint was the right decision. Second was possible today.
A good result for Nico Rosberg finishing 4th while the pressure continues to mount on Kovalainen who finished 5th after starting in 6th although 2 ahead of him retired!
Timo Glock also had a strong race. Starting 14th (13th) and managing to finish 6th is impressive indeed. He managed to jump his teammate as well as the two Brawns
Jenson Button had an ordinary race, starting 8th and only managing to move up 1 place despite two cars ahead of him retiring. He will not be pleased with this result. Only consolation is that Webber couldn't get first or second and Vettel retired.
Jarno Trulli who started 11th (qualified 12th) managed to score points but he won't be happy that his teammate who started behind him managed to finish two places ahead of him.
Nakajima and Barrichello missed out on 8th place by a second!
Piquet finished 12th, this is probably his last race with Renault. Perhaps also in Formula 1
Well done to Alguersuari for finishing his first Formula 1 race and finishing ahead of his teammate Buemi

Latest on Massa is that he remains in stable condition in an induced coma. He responded to his family earlier in the day.

It is reported that Renault have been suspended for 1 race as a result of Alonso's car losing a wheel and the team not informing Alonso that the wheel was loose.

Was looking good for Alonso for a while but it seems he already had problems then the tyre stuff up! That tyre flying in the air was dangerous but not sure if banning them for 1 race is fair. They should let them race without Constructor points

In total agreement. The news from the hospital sounds good and we can only continue hoping and praying that he will have a speedy and complete recovery.
DotD..... not sure. Webbo, as JM pointed out, was the top non KERS driver. I thought Alonso was going to win for a while but that was short lived. Might have to think about this one a bit longer.

Once again, the Hungaroring produces another interesting result. For sure Fernando Alonso would have pulled out a victory had he not imitated another Renault driver in losing a wheel while leading a race (Rene Arnoux in 1982 @ Zandvoort, NZ).



Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton for a superb victory. He pulled out such a lead, the TV producers stop following his car and showed a lot of other on-track battles. Is McLaren truly back though?

Mark Webber gets 2 thumbs up for capitalizing on his recent form and pulling into 2nd place in the WDC standings ahead of wunderkind Sebastien Vettel.



My Driver of the Day was Lewis Hamilton for making it look like 2008. My DotD runner up was Timo Glock for once again passing the most cars in the race.

My Ironman of the Day was Nico Rosberg who despite the distractions once again quietly came in 4th.

Could it e that Brawn GP is finally out of gas?

My thoughts are with felipe, I hope he is able to return this season and reap the benefits of the much improved Ferrari. Like the McLaren it has come on leaps and bounds in the last few races.

Lewis was in indomitable form yesterday, with considerably more fuel he tore into Fernando's early lead at the rate of a second a lap. Had Fernando managed to retain his wheel he would have been very fortunate to make a top four finish. The way the car ate its tyres betrayed the fact that it was just not up to the job.

Mark Webber's fastest lap 1m21.931s as opposed to Lewis' 1m22.479s would seem to suggest that the McLaren is indeed still 0.5s off the pace of the Red Bull. However Lewis set his fastest lap on lap 16 and Mark on lap 65, a time when track conditions - particularly those found in Hungary - would be more conducive to setting a fast time.

I noticed Lewis make a stab at retaining the fastest lap around the same time as Mark set his fastest. Lewis set the fastest first sector time of the race after having been consistently 0.3s slower in that sector on the previous laps of that stint. He had been conserving his car for quite some time. His middle sector went away from him and he didn't try a fastest lap again after that.

In the early part of the race Lewis was setting 1m22s whilst Mark was setting 1m23s consistently 0.5s slower but Mark was only carrying 1.5kg more fuel!!! Both cars had a car in front of them producing dirty air, this would suggest that McLaren has considerably better race pace than the Red Bull at least on circuits with characteristics similar to Hungary.

If this is the case them Valencia could well favour the Mclaren and perhaps by the time we get to Spa and Monza McLaren will have more aero developments that Lewis can utilise.

All in all it looks as though the Red Bull's have really got their work cut out overhauling the Brawn's even if the Brawn does continue to struggle for developments and pace.

Alonso had a fuel problem prior to his tyre problem and that is the reason for the drop in his pace and for his retirement. Had he not had either of these problems he would have challenged for the win but we'll never know.

So unlucky as the Renault has been so reliable! Oh well at least we know that he has a car that can go fast now and I hope we see him in Valencia
