A strange Thread, indeed. It appears that people actually get more excited when it's a Red parade than they do when it's a Blue one!
At least the hated Scuderia incites emotion when they dominate. As they still do, even when they merely race well. Michael's drive, for instance, at Silverstone, had it been turn for turn and lap for lap Identical, only turned in by Webber or Rossberg in the Williams or even Jenson Button in the Honda, would have generated an immense tide of commentary and exhaltation. This thread would have been alive with "I told you so's" and predictions of a New WDC toute suite.
As it is, because second place is taken by SEVEN TIME WDC Michael Schumacher, everyone yawns and says, "Ho Hum. Of course evil Michael, driving for Ferrari --which is especially favored by the FIA and the Gods themselves-- is merely up to his usual nasty tricks, finding yet another way to steal championship points. Probably Fisi was napping and Michael stole is fifth gear or something. He couldn't POSSIBLY have driven a good race."
However, thank the racing Gods, this is the real world of F1, where drivers in clearly inferior cars (like Kimi and Michael) still manage to score points whereas their team-mates find excuses.
Let's try a thought experiment: since Fisi was driving a Renault at Silverstone and since it is evidently revealed truth that the Renault team do not play favorites, his machine was as well prepared as Fernando's. Now suppose the driver of that second Renault had been Kimi Raikkonen, or Michael Schumacher. Do you believe the results would have been the same? Or Michael? Heck, I think even Nico would have made the podium and I'm certain Mark Webber would have as well.
As I said, Ferrari inspires strong feeling whether they are in the championship race or not, Renault, however, except I guess for me, is generally well-liked so even when they win in a walk not only does no one object, no one even gets very excited.
This is too bad because Fernando, obviously, is a brilliant driver and even when he does everything perfectly, as in the past couple of races, much of his success is attributed to his machine. All kinds of excuses are made for Fisi, (and I for one, am beginning to get tired of them. For a long time I was one of the ones who said when Fisi got in a good car it would be goodbye Michael and hello WDC!)
Still, because he's at Renault, not Ferrari, no one claims that he suffers (as Rubens did) from "team orders" or some other malevolent force from the dark side.
I can't believe either Ferrrari, or McLaren, or Renault, or Williams (like Roger Penske in the IRL) ever presents less than the two best cars they can to their drivers. And so part of the thrill for me in the race is comparing the team mates' outcomes.
When this means, as it has for Juan Pablo, that a driver I liked is clearly out-classed, I believe managers (at least those who are competent) up and down the pit lane take notice. Consequently, I expect to see Nico --if not Webber, as well-- in a competitive car next year. This car may be the Williams with Lexus (or Toyota) engines, [wouldn't it be great to see the Williams slide reversed?] but I am secretly hoping Ron Dennis will find a way to put Nico next to Fernando in the Black and Silver Macs!
If Kimi ends up at Renault next year, I hope Michael does too! And I also hope, if Michael stays that he does his valedictory season with Kimi as a team mate; I believe we'd see some great racing, no matter what the WDC outcome is! If it happens, I expect to see a bloody fight for points between the two that will hark back to the days of Prost & Senna.
I know that many believe Michael will not sign if he has real competition and I hope they are wrong. Clearly he will NOT win (or even contest) the WDC this year; his best move, then, would be to pair (somehow!) with Kimi next year and go out in style. I don't see how he COULD pair with Fernando, though...
Alas, probably Jean Todt doesn't have the cojones to confront Michael and demand that he accept a competitive mate. Ron Dennis and Frank Wiklliams I admire precisely because they DO!
I have left out Flavio. On purpose. I am, after all, as afflicted with prejudice as any F1 fan.
My biggest disappointment this year: Honda.
I hope Toyota gets out of F1; they could sell the team to David Richards or Eddie Irvine (or even Eddie Jordan) and maybe we'd see some results from them. But I fear they have inherited the Ford / Jaguar curse.
Isn't there another race coming up soon? In Canada? Let's hope it's a barn burner
