New qualifying format for 2006!
Moderators: cmlean, Ed, The Qualiflyer, The Heretic
Does that mean each car will be weighed prior to the commencement of the final 20min qualifying and then returned to that same weight for the race and I suppose how exact will they be in refueling to the starting amount? Will that also show what each teams stratagy is to everyone prior to the start?
Indeed cmlean, cars will be weighed prior to the final 20 minute qualifying session and after qualifying the cars will have fuel added for the race.
This however raises an interesting scenario. Would some drivers just use the 20 minute session as a long practice run and in the final few minutes put on new tyres and qualify on a very light fuel load ? That could create a lot of traffic for those doing a flying lap. There is also the potential of drivers slowing other drivers intentionally.
I was actually surprised that they didn't set a maximum number of laps per session. Allowing unlimited number of laps during the qualifying sessions could be a mistake.
Regarding the strategy, we'd still be guessing but we'll know that the top 10 cars will have at least enough fuel equal to the number of laps they did in the last 20 minutes of qualifying.
The limit of 7 sets of tyres per car per weekend could make things interesting. This practically means 5 sets for Saturday and Sunday. Teams will use 1 set for practice and have 4 sets available for qualifying and the race. If a driver uses a new set for each qualifying session they could have problems during the race but if they save their tyres for the race their qualifying runs could be compromised.
In 2004 the driver was allowed 10 sets for the weekend with 3 sets to be used on Friday while in 2005 the driver was allowed 4 sets for the weekend with 2 sets to be used on Friday
I am sure we'll see a few interesting scenarios at the start of the season but after a few races all the teams would find the optimum approach!

I wish,i can rgt?,that the tv commentators r informed about the amount of fuel left in the 1st 10 cars & how much fuel is gone in the last 10 cars...complete open startegy..beat it,play around it,spoil it

An F1 Idiot!!!
Some changes in the qualifying format...
Apparently the FIA have foundout about some loophole which the teams could exploit..
Apparently the top 10 cars needed to inform the FIA how much fuel they were carrying before the final shootout & then do their qualifying runs & later refuel to the amount mentioned earlier to FIA for the race.
FIA thinks tht teams could cheat with this, informing some amount & then leaking fuel on their out lap for a light run....
FIA will do their calculation based on V8 fuel consumption.....
dont wanna think anymore...

There will be so much loopholes that this format will probably change after a few races.
Already Max admits that cars will run for the entire third session but calls that highly entertaining

I don't think we'll see a flying lap in the 3rd session

I concur Graham.Graham Ross wrote:Do you smell fuelKapel wrote:Some changes in the qualifying format...
