Da Matta almost fully recovered

30 November 2006
The racing world is delighted to hear the news that Christiano Da Matta has almost made a full recovery following his horrific crash at a champ car test on 3 August. The 33-year-old suffered a subdural hematoma when his RuSPORT car struck a deer at Road America in Elkhart Lake and was taken to hospital to undergo emergency surgery.

"I'm almost completely recovered, living a normal life and focused on my health," the Brazilian announced. "Due to the physical therapy, I can already move my arm whatever way I want, and I know I just need to work a tiny little bit on my strength."

The doctors have been impressed by his progress since being allowed to leave hospital on the 22 September.

"I'm very happy to be able to do almost all the stuff I would do normally on any given day like playing guitar, running, spinning on my stationary bike, and I really enjoy all the time I've been spending with my family, friends and my girlfriend."
Hello all my mates from the thunderous Down Under and everyone else on this forum. :friends:

This is fantastic news about Cristiano daMatta. I met him when he was just arriving in IndyCars, and he is one hell of a competitor and spirit. To even survive what he went through could be seen as divine providence.

Here's to a fun and safe race season in 2007!

Chris  :drink:

Welcome back, Shorty!!! :) :)

Making his first appearance in the ChampCar paddock since his accident at Road America back in mid-2006, Cristiano da Matta is continuing his recovery and was asked by everyone when he might be able to return to competition.....his reply,
It's up to the doctors. They wanted me to stay out of the car extra time so that my brain would heal fully in case I were to have another accident. I could come back this year but realistically it is too hard to find a ride mid-season so I am targeting 2008. I am working out every day so physically I am in the best shape of my life.
As I said before, take as much time as you need, Shorty....but it is very great to see you back in the paddock. :) :D

Da Matta set to resume racing career.............

Post by mlittle » Sun Feb 03, 2008 10:28 am

After Cristiano da Matta's near-fatal testing accident at Road America back in 2006, there were fears that Shorty might never get to return to the racing cockpit......well, according to the most recent commentary by noted American open-wheel scribe Gordon Kirby, Shorty is indeed preparing to make his return to the sport as part of a Bob Stallings Racing Daytona Prototype over in the Grand-Am Rolex Series alongside fellow ChampCar alum Jimmy Vasser.

Here is the link to the Kirby commentary.........................
