Fernando Alonso - 2006 Formula One World Champion

Post by Ed » Mon Oct 23, 2006 9:51 pm

Congratulations to Fernando Alonso for winning his second Formula 1 Drivers' Title in a row.

Alonso becomes the 14th driver in history to win 2 (or more) titles and only the 8th driver to win back to back titles. The other 7 drivers are:
Michael Schumacher (94/95, 2000 - 2004), Juan-Manuel Fangio (54 - 57), Alberto Ascari (52/53), Jack Brabham (59/60), Alain Prost (85/86), Ayrton Senna (90/91) and Mika Hakkinen (98/99).

This is what Fernando Alonso told the team on the parade lap:
Thank you, merci ? tous, you have done a fantastic job. This is my last race with you guys, this was the final race, and we have won both championships again. Thank you for all these years, it has been a pleasure for me to work with you and to have this success, and I wish you the best for the future.
In celebration of their second 'double', the Renault engineers fired up Fisichella's engine, revved it close to 20,000 rpm and played the Marseillaise, then the Marcha Real followed by God Save the Queen.
We'll update this section with a link to the audio if Renault make it available.

Almost uniquely in modern Formula 1, Alonso has raced with the same car - Chassis R26-03 - since the first race of the season in Bahrain!

And a nice gesture by the Renault mechanics following the race, they collected a number of bottles of champagne and walked down the pit-lane to Super Aguri. The Renault mechanics wanted to congratulate Super Aguri for their dedication during a very tough first season and doing a very good job particularly at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Thanks to YouTube, nearly everything becomes available nearly instantly.

The audio quality isn't too bad either!

Thanks <T-K>

 I don't understand surely La Marseillaise would be more appropriate for an engine of that calibre?

Congratulations to Alonso for his second WDC.
I was at the race and really enjoyed it... and the celebration party!

Comparing what Schumi, Senna and Prost had accomplished at the age that Alonso is today, 25 years, 2 months and 25 days, we found:
World Drivers Champ.: Alonso 2 Shumi 0 Senna 0 Prost 0
Races: Alonso 88 Schumi 38 Senna 18 Prost 4
Wins: Alonso 15 Schumi 2 Senna 1 Prost 0
Poles: Alonso 15 Schumi 0 Senna 3 Prost 0
Podiums: Alonso 37 Schumi 17 Senna 4 Prost 0
Points: Alonso 381 Schumi 109 Senna 22 Prost 3
Fastest Laps: Alonso 8 Schumi 7 Senna 2 Prost 0

These are facts... he has plenty of time to break all the records... and he has also the skills to do it (I don?t know about the will)
He helped Renault to came out of nowhere and will help MacLaren to go up to the top

Yeah but the age of Hamilton & Kovalainen is about to dawn and poor OLD Alonso's time has run out. He knew he'd have to make hay while the sun shone. 8)

Lucky you

Impressive stats and I very much agree that he will make a difference at McLaren!
At this stage he has said 3 Championships would be satisfactory but I am sure he'd want to go further.

If the McLaren is reliable (and there is a big question mark over that!!), next year will be even easier for Alonso as he gains more experience and confidence!

Kovalainen may be a threat as he has a full season of testing but Hamilton will take time. (Kovalainen is about the same age as OLD Alonso  )
Assuming the cars are on a similar level, Kovalainen would have a chance in 2008 and Hamilton in 2009 (assuming he does drive next year, otherwise 2010).

(I don't think anyone has ever won the title on debut - except the first one of course :D )

Fernando Alonso visited the Renault F1 Team factory at Enstone to thank his team-mates.

Here is some of what he said:
I just want to thank everybody, every single person in the team that helped win these two championships. We have had a very tough season, and a very close fight with Ferrari. And at the end, you know, time puts everybody in their place ? and we are in P1 because we deserved it more than the others.
he added
I am now moving on to another team as you know but if I don't have the possibility to win in the future, then I hope you win because you are the best.
Alonso visits his home town of Oviedo on Sunday and next week visits Viry (the other Renault factory - Engines)
