2007 IRL Rd. 17--Peak Antifreeze Indy 300

Post by mlittle » Wed Sep 05, 2007 12:00 pm

Every season has its' beginnings, and every season has it endings......and the 2007 IndyCar Series season train has reached its' final stop of the year at the 1.5-mile egg-shaped Chicagoland Speedway. Set in the backdrop of Joliet, Illinois, home of the Blues Brothers and just a stone's throw away from the Windy City, Chicago, it is one last chance to make a mark on the season and for Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti, one last chance to fight for the series championship...... :box: :box:

But Chicagoland has been the scence of some pretty interesting events in the past few years.............
~~Three of the closest finishes in series history have occurred on the highbanks of Chicagoland...............
2002--0.0024 sec., Sam Hornish, Jr.(1st), Al Unser, Jr.(2nd)
2003--0.0099 sec., Sam Hornish, Jr.(1st), Scott Dixon(2nd)
2005--0.0133 sec, Dan Wheldon(1st), Helio Castroneves(2nd)
.............and two of the closest 1-2-3 finishes as well......................
2002--0.0596 sec., Sam Hornish, Jr.(1st), Al Unser, Jr.(2nd), Buddy Lazier(3rd)
2003--0.0100 sec., Sam Hornish, Jr.(1st), Scott Dixon(2nd), Bryan Herta(3rd)

~~For the first time in the history of NA open-wheel racing, the fields for both Chicagoland races in 2005 in both the IndyCar Series and Indy Pro Series were led by women(Danica Patrick and Sarah McCune)

Event schedule for the weekend................................
Practice Session #1, 8:10-10 am, 8 September 2007
Practice Session #2, 11 am-12 pm, 8 September 2007
Qualifying Session, 4:30 pm, 8 September 2007
Peak Antifreeze Indy 300, 4 pm, live on ABC Sports
--domestic AM radio courtesy of the IMS Radio Network
--domestic satellite radio on XM Satellite Radio Chs. 144(XM Sports Nation) and 145(IndyCar Racing)
--TV/radio simulcasting courtesy of the United States Armed Forces Network

Good luck to all the competitors this weekend and let's put the wraps on the 2007 IndyCar Series season in style...................... :duel: :duel: :knight: :horn: :horn: :knight: :box: :box: :threat: :drive: :drive: :burnout: :shotgun: :shine: :knight: :knight:

Chicagoland News and Notes.....................

Post by mlittle » Sat Sep 08, 2007 12:01 pm

With the 2007 season finale in the headlights, here's some of the news and notes floating around..................

~~Who will win the title fight? Three drivers--Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan--go into the season-ending Peak Antifreeze Indy 300 with a chance to win the series championship and the $1 million prize that goes with it. For Franchitti, its' a simple thing--win and the title's his. For the Kiwi, its' win and keep Franchitti more than four points back. For Kanaan, its' a little harder--not only does he have to win(and possibly get the 3 pts. for leading the most laps) but he has to hope that Franchitti does 13th or worse and Dixon finishes 16th or worse. All-in-all, it should be an interesting way to wrap up the season!

~~Looking at the entry list for the race, it's a mixed bag.....on the one hand, its' refreshing to see drivers like Marty "Mad Dog" Roth and P.J. Chesson on the list--they're not the best drivers on the circuit, but they're at least competent........on the other hand, Milka Duno is on the other side of the equation--having already demonstrated this year that IMO she doesn't know what in the h--- she's doing out there, but if race control's smart, they'll yank her off the track at the first sign of trouble. I've said it before, she does not belong out there, period.

~~Silly season has officially begun!! Currently, here are the silly season rumors......
--Who will replace Sam Hornish, Jr. at Team Penske should he go to Sprint Cup(currently Nextel Cup) in 2008?
--Will someone have the courage to pick up 2007 IPS champion Alex Lloyd, who recently said on XM Satellite Radio that he is actively searching for an IndyCar ride in 2008. IMO, this cat's got the skills to race IndyCars; someone needs to sign him for '08.
--Will Vision Racing downsize from 3 cars to 2 cars next year? At Detroit, teamm officials confirmed to the media that they have given Tomas Scheckter and A.J. Foyt, IV permission to talk with other teams for next year; if something comes up, it'll go up on the silly season boards.

~~As to the "value" program that Brian Barnhart and Terry Angstadt talked about at Belle Isle.....don't expect any announcements this weekend. What I suspect their plan is goes along these lines of thoughts.....
--Larger prize purses for each individual IndyCar Series race(the Indy 500 not withstanding; their prize payouts are set by IMS officials)
--Additional contingency prize payouts at each event(current prizes of that nature include the Lincoln Electric Hard Charger Award for whoever started the furthest back and led one lap; the Firestone Performance Award for whoever leads at a certain point during the race using Firestone tires; the Argent Mortgage Fast Lap Award for whoever sets the fastest lap during the race and the AAMCO Transmissions Pole Award for whoever qualifies on the pole for a specific race)
--How to insure that, if the prize payouts are increased, the payouts do not adversely affect driver/team contracts(most teams pay drivers a set salary w/bonues for performance, along w/a percentage of each race's purse)

Saturday's Observations...........

Post by mlittle » Sun Sep 09, 2007 4:52 am

With the song "Ride Like the Wind" blastin' on the MP3 player and the laptop propped up on my leg, here are some of the news, notes and observations from the home of the Blues Brothers, Chicagoland(speaking of the Blues Brothers, where's Julian......  )

~~Pack racing is back! One thing I've noticed so far in the two practice sessions is the 4-5 car packs running around the track during the two IndyCar Series practice sessions......case in point, one 5-car pack involving Scott Sharp, Danica Patrick, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti and Vitor Meira. In a display that woulda' put the Blue Angels to shame, those five stuck their cars almost into one large group for roughly five minutes(............    ); first Patrick led, then she slid a groove up and let Sharp take the lead, and so on. Eventually that 5-car pack broke up as Patrick peeled off onto pitlane, but like I said, the way those five were driving, if it was aerobatics instead of racing, the current Blue Angels would be looking for employment!

~~Experienced help for Roth Racing this weekend........One of the biggest surprises so far was seeing Michael Cannon listed as P.J. Chesson's race engineer for this weekend. The reason....Cannon is considered one of the two best engineers over in ChampCar(equal in stature/talent to NHLR's Craig Hampson) and helped engineer A.J. Allmendinger's amazing 5-win run last year. In addition, there were other familiar faces from the rival series as well--FCR engineer Eric Zeto is engineering for Marty Roth this weekend and FCR chief mechanic Butch Winkle(who is Paul Tracy's crew chief in ChampCar) is Chesson's crew chief this weekend; in addition, personnel from FCR and Conquest are helping Roth's team as well(Mod's note.....Conquest Racing ran in the IRL back in 2002, so it is good to see Eric Bachelart's team around, even if it's just helping out another team.)

~~Scratch Kosuke Matsuura from the "driving for your career" card.....while Aguri-Panther Racing didn't say whether they would be bringing Matsuura back for 2008, they said the team's happy w/Kosuke and he has been improving in performance as of late(a good sign!). Rumor has it that they are looking to possibly become a 3-car team for 2008(with Meira, Matsuura and Mutoh).

Race day observations(part 1).................

Post by mlittle » Mon Sep 10, 2007 1:58 am

With the final race day of the 2007 IndyCar Series season now in the headlights, here are a few bits of news and notes to pass along...........

~~New testing facility............IRL officilas announced late Saturdayt that the series will have an open next next month at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Alabama; the test will serve three purposes.....(1)keep teams and crews a little busy during the off-season; (2)allow teams to test new parts from Dallara and Honda and (3)allow teams to evaluate new drivers as needed

~~Other items of note from HPD officials..................
(1)work is still ongoing on the paddle-shifting setup Honda wants to implement next year; reports are it won't be ready in time for the October test at Barber
(2)expect modifications to the engine and exhaust assemblies in order to reduce the noise signature on the Honda Indy V-8 engines; current plans will require an undertray modification but it is expected to reduce noise by around 7-9 dB
(3)HPD is considering bringing back the fuel control settings for the engines in 2008; the reason they took the settings out were due to concerns of engine knocking when the engines were running on the leanest two settings(an unexpected problem that they didn't have when the engines were on methanol.......   ); Honda techs did have the parts to make the changes and bring back the settings but decided not to for fear of not getting every engine changed during the season[better to leave everything as is and wait for 2008 to roll in]

Brief update on the Peak Antifreeze Indy 300................

On the last lap, as both Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti were side-by-side, inches apart, the Kiwi ran out of fuel and both the race win and the series championship fell right into the hands of the Scotsman.........how close was it........Dixon ran out of fuel on the last corner of the last lap of the 2007 season finale; THAT'S HOW CLOSE IT WAS!!!!

More to follow..................

Race day observations(part 2).................

Post by mlittle » Mon Sep 10, 2007 1:25 pm

With the evening sky clear and the day's memories in full view, here are some post-race observations on the race and the season that was....................

~~Interesting finish to the season............who'd thought it? Less than a qtr.-mile to the finish and Scott Dixon runs out of ethanol, and hands the title to Dario Franchitti, who wins his first career open-wheel title(he tied w/Juan Pablo Montoya back in the 1999 CART season, losing to JPM on wins[Montoya-7 to Franchitti-3].....) and, I suspect, finally can let the memories of that fallen title go([on a somber note, not only did he lose the CART title that year, but he also lost his close friend Greg Moore the same day as well..... :( ) Congratulations, though, are in order for Franchitti, for winning the 2007 IndyCar Series championship.......

In an historic twist, IMS president Joie Chitwood gave Franchitti a bronze badge dated 1965 w/the number 1127 on it; it was the number of the chassis Jim Clark drove to victory in the 500 and, as an astute student of motorsports history, it had to be fitting for a fellow Scotsman like Franchitti to receive it.

~~Rather than look at the race as a whole, let's look at the drivers and how each of the 22 did in relation to the race.....................(going from 22nd to 1st)

--Marco Andretti, #26 NYSE Group/C-BOT} suffered suspension failure on lap 35 and crashed; complained of neck pain and was checked at a local hospital(everything was negative BTW); this was his 10th DNF of the 2007 season...........
--Darren Manning, #14 ABC Supply Co.} what can anyone say; you try driving an absolute pig of a car at 210+ mph........
--Tomas Scheckter, #2 Indy Vision on Joost} tire came off early under the first caution period(how does that occur after 35 or so laps.......)
--P.J. Chesson, #76 Dussault Apparel} got parked during the race when both side mirrors came loose after 75 or so laps; managed to get about 93 laps in by race's end.........had one of the better engineers in OWR, Minardi Team USA's Mike Cannon(currently Robert Doornbos' engineer in ChampCar) and if he ever became available, he's the type of engineer a new team like Roth Racing can build on
--Vitor Meira, #4 Delphi} season ended the same as Marco's..........visiting the business end of the SAFER barriers
--Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic/ARTA/TPR} in what might've been his last ICS race, ended early w/electrical problems
--Ed Carpenter, #20 Hitachi Power Tools} they must share the same electrical wirings; he, too, suffered electrical woes
--Milka Duno, #23 CITGO} how she managed to finish 15th w/out Brian Barnhart parking her --- is beyond me........she was not only slow, but didn't get out of faster drivers' way when they came upon her(on two separate occasions, she slowed AND stayed in the middle, forcing drivers around her high and low...........   ).......when the race was over, ABC Sports was interviewing Dario Franchitti's wife, actress Ashley Judd when Judd essentially ripped Duno for her driving, saying "I know this isn't very sportsmanlike, but they need to get the 23 car(Duno) off the track. It's very dangerous; when a car's more than 10 miles off the pace its' not appropriate for them to be racing. People's lives are at stake." (mod's note.........spoken like a true Southern belle, Ashley......    )
--Marty Roth, #25 Dussault Apparel} with Milka driving, Marty Roth actually can race a little bit..........on the other hand, he needs to stick to running his team as an owner only
--Dan Wheldon, #10 Target} his post-Kansas meltdown ends for the year as he took a fast car to the front once again, only to run out of fuel w/less than 10 laps remaining
--Sarah Fisher, #5 AAMCO Transmissions} for having to drive a pig of a car again, she didn't do so bad; she drove cleanly and stayed out of the way.....hopefully, she'll stay w/Dreyer & Reinbold for 2008
--Danica Patrick, #7 Motorola} ends her 2007 season the way it began.....by spinning on pit-in.   Seriously, though, 2007 was a good campaign for the hometown girl(her hometown of Roscoe, Ill. is just a stone's throw from Chicagoland); she ran consistantly w/the big dogs all year and that first win is coming, like Kanaan told her at Detroit last week; she's also earned the respect of her two veteran teammates, Kanaan and Franchitti for both can be tough-as-nails taskmasters but are very good drivers to learn from. 2008 should be a good season for her.

And now, the top-10....................
10th} A.J. Foyt, IV, #22 Indy Vision on Joost} this cat gets' my "Most Improved Driver" award for 2007; he's gone from a backmarker, in-the-way driver to one who can now run with the leaders.......he's also improved his racecraft this year and things can only get better; on the cooldown lap after the checkered flag, he got on the radio and thanked his crew for all their hard work this year and said he hopes to repeat this year's successes in 2008
9th} Buddy Rice, #15 Hard Rock Hotel-Las Vegas} drove a great race for DRR and the team seems to be improving its' superspeedway package far beyond what was expected for this year
8th} Hideki Mutoh, #60 Honda Formula Dream} is this cat for real or what? he mixed it up all day long w/the big dogs, even when a lap down......mark my words; kids like him, Alex Lloyd and a few others currently in IPS or Atlantics are the series' future over the next few years
7th}(R)Ryan Hunter-Reay, #17 Ethanol} ran a steady, strong race, earning the ROY honors despite driving only 6 races this year
6th} Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-11} saw his trophy dreams end w/a flat right rear, but fought back to 6th
5th} Scott Sharp, #8 Patron Tequila} ended his first year w/Rahal-Letterman Racing in solid shape, continuing his IronMan streak on 138 consecutive ICS starts and it looks as though that'll continue into 2008; on a separate note, reports are that Patron will return w/Sharp as well......as far as RLR's season, could we see 'em mix it up w/Penske, Ganassi and AGR next year?
4th} Helio Castroneves, #3 Team Penske} ran a decent race but got caught on one bad pit sequence at 150
3rd} Sam Hornish, Jr., #6 Team Penske} same as Helio; ran a decent race and might've won had both Dixon and Dario ran out of fuel
2nd} Scott Dixon, #9 Target} one corner; one corner.......that's all that stood between him, victory and the series championship..........going into 2008, should Franchitti not return to the IRL, the Kiwi's the early favorite for 2008
1st} Dario Franchitti, #27 Canadian Club} what a way to wrap up the year; he wins the race and the series championship.....interesting enough, did anyone notice that as he was crossing the start/finish line, he was pointing skyward in honor of late friend Greg Moore? Dario's a class act and I bet this win and the series title will go a long way to deciding his future plans........
