What About Engines for Melbourne?

Post by Jim Watt » Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:11 am

:D Hello Ed:

I'm thinking about Melbourne already and there are two things that can really affect the race: (1) What in the world gives with Renault engines? :?

The Webbo's terrible black cloud at the start in Bahrain was dismissed by Speed's commentators as some sort of fuel burn off resulting from over filling the tank? 8) It didn't APPEAR to affect his performance in the race, but by the end of lap one it was already too late for Mark to do much (as it was for just about all the drivers ) and what am I supposed to make of RBR's official claim that they had a 'spark plug' problem with Seb V.'s engine!?! :blah2: Sounds mighty fishy to me. 8)

So I guess I'm asking: will RBR use the same engines for Melbourne that they used in Bahrain?

And, (2) Ferrari changed engines for Bahrain before the race. So Melbourne will be the second race for a second set of engines?

Can they use the first set of engines instead? That is, can they re-build the engines they thought were affected by sand and use them again, or, when you change engines, do the rules say you have to toss the old ones out?

Thanks for your thoughts,

The engine regulation for this season (and the last) is fairly straight forward: Each driver is allowed the use of 8 sealed engines for the entire season (last season there were 17 races while this season there are 19!). An engine cannot be rebuilt and the teams have to justify the reason for which a seal may be removed.

Each driver can use their 8 allocated engines whichever way they (or their team) want but if they use a 9th engine then they will drop 10 places on the grid and so on.

Drivers will certainly have to do more than one race on the same engine however the team decides when that will occur (for example it is unlikely that teams will race the same engine for Spa and Monza).

I think many of the teams may opt for a new engine for the race in Melbourne but may practice with the engines from Bahrain as the conditions in Bahrain were hot and sandy.

With 19 races this season, the teams will have to be very careful with regards to engine conservation otherwise the drivers will be heavily penalised towards the end of the season particularly that overtaking seems to become more and more difficult this season and so a driver starting in 11th and lower will not be able to make up a lot of ground.
