This turned out to be a really short session with technical problems with the CCTV equipment. FP2 will be extended by 30 minutes to cover the loss of practice time. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Pierre Gasly as his Alpine had stopped on circuit and was unlikely to be returned to the pits for repairs.

Another disrupted session with first Kevin Magnussen bringing out the red flags after an engine failure on the main straight.
Esteban Ocon then brought out the next red flag of the session when his Alpine had a water pressure problem and stopped in turn 5.
A huge downpour, which appeared first at the hairpin, put most teams back behind the pit wall and the chequered flag was dropped.

The practice session had rain and it caught out Carlos Sainz. On the entry into turn 2, he spun into the barriers resulting to damage to the front and rear of his Ferrari and bringing out the only red flag for the session.

Carlos Sainz looks to have earned himself a visit to the stewards after impeding Pierre Gasly into the final chicane in Q1.
Q2 commenced with most teams going out on intermediates. Alex Albon held in the pits for a short while before a decision to go out on softs. This proved a master stroke in the tactical battle with him finding the sweet spot in the session, making it through at the top of the charts and into Q3.
Most teams got it their banker lap before Oscar Piastri parked his McLaren in the barrier with a bit over 7 minutes remaining in the session. This brought out the red flags and, during the clean up period, the weather turned for the worse ending any chance for an improvement in times.

Carlos Sainz, Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll all incurred 3 grid place penalties for impeding during qualifying.
Nico Hulkenberg incurred a 3 place grid penalty for a red flag infringement.

That huge downpour had a big impact. I thought the meteorologists had warned about it.

It was interesting watching the teams when the change was imminent. You had to be on track at exactly the right moment with an appropriate amount of fuel. More so than normal as the impact on your start position was determined very early in the session.
