Day one is over and Oscar Piastri has come back to play. The question is, has he left his run too late?

Oscar Piastri took the lead from the start and was never headed. He controlled the race from front and, just for fun, set his fastest lap on his final circuit of the race.
Lewis Hamilton has a race to forget. His Ferrari and he are not in sync with each other.
Yuki Tsunoda looked like he had given up his 5th place behind Max Verstappen with a 5 second penalty that pushed him behind Kimi Antonelli. Kimi returned the favour with his own track limit penalty and, aside from both being 5 seconds further back, retained their track positions.

Oscar Piastri had a day to remember in attempting to keep his chance of winning the WDC alive.
If he can win this grand prix, his chances will still be slim but still possible. Maybe he needs Max to send his Red Bull down the inside of turn 1, like Max did last year in Adu Dhabi to Piastri, to ruin Norris' race.

It had to be the race that got away for McLaren.
A safety car was called on lap 7, the earliest opportunity to get to the chequered flag with the two mandatory pit stops. Being permitted to catch up to the safety car means that you have a free pit stop. Of the 19 remaining runners, 17 drivers took this option.
McLaren gambled on another safety car further into the races however no other incidents occurred.
Oscar Piastri drove the wheels off his McLaren managing to get back to 8 seconds behind Max Verstappen and the damage was done. Lando Norris ended up behind both Carlos Sainz and Kimi Antonelli, managing to get past Antonelli on the penultimate lap following an error by the Mercedes driver.
