2006 IRL Rd. 6--Bombardier Learjet 500k

Post by mlittle » Mon Jun 05, 2006 5:52 pm

With five of fourteen rounds in the books, the IRL IndyCar Series travels to the heart of Texas for the annual early June visit to the high-banked(26-deg.), 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway, which has hosted more events(15 dating back to 1997) than any other venue in the IRL. Racing at Texas is similar to when NASCAR's Nextel Cup visits Daytona or Talledega; here, with the fast surfaces and high banks, the IndyCars will run in multiple-car packs, with two and three abrest on the backstraight....but if any should touch wheels, the results can be disasterous. Last June, it was then-Panther Racing driver Tomas Scheckter who took the checkers and gave Chevy its' final IndyCar Series victory. It takes rawhide nerves to master the highbanks here, and drivers will need every bit of skill they have if they want to visit victory lane after 200 laps. Here is the event schedule for the Bombardier Learjet 500k(500 kilometers; the race distance is 200 laps, or roughly 300 miles.....(all times are U.S. EDT, -4 Hrs. GMT)

Practice Session #1}3:30 PM, 8 June 2006
Practice Session #2}5:30 PM, 8 June 2006
Qualifying Session}8:30 PM, 8 June 2006
Practice Session #3}3 PM, 9 June 2006
Final Practice Session}8:30 PM, 9 June 2006
Bombardier Learjet 500k}9 PM, 10 June 2006; set for broadcast on ESPN, with radio simulcast on the IMS Radio Network[domestic radio and webcast through indycar.com], as well as on Ch. 145, XM Satellite Radio. The race will also be broadcast via the IMS Radio Network on the United States Armed Forces Network.

As always, I'll have qual. and race reviews, observations, commentaries, and whatever else crosses paths with this ole' internet scribe.   8) 8)

New rivalries in the brewing.........

Post by mlittle » Wed Jun 07, 2006 1:57 pm

Two days after being referred to as an "idiot" by the IndyCar Series' two-most popular drivers, Cheever Racing driver/owner Eddie Cheever, Jr. came back today with some rebuttals of what transpired at Watkins Glen this past Sunday. The first of these incidents occurred on lap 18, when Cheever supposedly hit the #16 Argent/PEAK car of Danica Patrick, sending her into the turn 11 tirewalls; according to Cheever,
She did that all by herself.
Unfortunately, Cheever's in the wrong; spotters on the pitstraight were asked by series officials about it, and they all said the #51 hit the #16, which corresponds with what fans saw from the grandstands along the pitstraight. The second incident, when Cheever ran the #26 NYSE Group car of rookie Marco Andretti off-course at turn 9, has apparently reignited a long-dormant rivalry btwn. Cheever and the Andrettis'(more on that later.) When asked about the second incident, Cheever explained,
To think I would intentionally take anyone out is ludicrous. It's beyond words. It was a racing accident, pure and simple. There wasn't any intent, so I find the accusations incomprehensible.
Cheever added, in what some are saying was a cheap-shot towards Marco,
No single team is the center of the racing universe, no matter how much they seem to think they are. Nobody took them out intentionally, so their accusations look ridiculous.
As to the long-dormant feud btwn. Cheever and the Andrettis'........it began at Long Beach in 1992, when Cheever was involved in an accident with Mario Andretti. Ever since then, it's lain dormant.....until April in St. Pete, when both Mario and Michael verbally trashed Cheever following an on-track incident btwn. Marco and Cheever(as mentioned in the 2006 St. Pete thread in the IRL forum). Ironically, Cheever used his greatest racing victory as a comical foil towards Patrick and Andretti.....
The last time I checked, my name was on the Borg-Warner Trophy; those lobbing accusations at me aren't. I'm not perfect, and neither are they. Let's get back to racing.
Like I said in the Watkins Glen thread......and to think, we're headed to Texas next.   :danger: :danger: :duel: :duel: :box: :box: :argue: :argue: :argue:

Target/Ganassi tops Thursday practice

Post by mlittle » Fri Jun 09, 2006 10:15 am

Under a hot, blazing Texas sun, it was Target/Ganassi Racing that led the combined practice charts, as both Scott Dixon(#9 Target D/H) and Dan Wheldon(#10 Target D/H) both set 214+ mph speeds in practice. Close behind in third was this year's Indy 500 winner, Sam Hornish, Jr.(#6 Marlboro-Team Penske D/H) at 213.932 mph.......qualifying for the Bombardier Learjet 500k is set to begin around 8:30 pm US EDT(7:30 US CDT time).

Qualifying primer............
1}Each driver receives two laps to set their fastest qual. lap
2}If a team withdraws their driver's entry from the qual. line, then that driver must wait until all other qualifiers have made their attempt; however, they will receive only one qual. lap, not two

While qual. approaches, here are a few brief items of notes.....
--for the first time in IRL IndyCar Series history, all the drivers on the grid will be in the same equipment; all 19 entries are using Dallara/Honda indycars
--in order to acclimate themselves to their new rides, series officials allowed Rahal-Letterman Racing drivers Buddy Rice(#15 Argent/Pioneer D/H), Danica Patrick(#16 Argent/PEAK D/H), and Jeff Simmons(#17 Ethanol D/H) an extra 10 minutes of practice time; on the combined charts, Patrick was 10th-fastest(211.814 mph/24.729 sec), Rice was 11th-fastest(211.640 mph/24.750 sec) and Simmons was 17th-fastest(210.170 mph/24.923 sec). RLR interim VP-Operations Ray Leto did mention to the media today that the team will use the Panoz/Honda indycars at Infineon in late August, joining Target/Ganassi Racing as the only teams in the series to use both chassis
