With a bit of luck someone will arrive that can dominate the way he has but some how I doubt it. With a bit of luck Lewis Hamilton will help fill the vacuum and give Alonso and Kimi a run for their money in a Mclaren.
I'd rather have two Spaniards racing for McLaren. De La Rosa is a good driver. Hamilton ain't bad either but just like Speed he will need some more time to adapt. I'd very much like to see McLaren to become as competitive as in 2005. At that time their cars let them down. Alonso in a McLaren may prove to be a little too JPM-ish. If the car breaks down a coupla times the young'un will lose all his motivation.

Yeah well, he'll be driving a McLaren mind you. Not the best reliability record

:why: You think Alonso won't be competitive in a McLaren?

F1greyhound wrote:MICHAEL will obviously step down as 8-time WDC, and FERNANDO will be extremely motivated to collect his 2nd crown for MCLAREN next year. In a way, with question marks regarding leadership at FERRARI in 2007 KIMI might find himself in a more difficult situation than he would have expected. Plus FELIPE may not necessarily be any slower and knowing the team for a few years already...

Dont underestimate BMW-SAUBER who are suddenly right there and if pushed NICK could be right there with the boys next season. Wonder if he was under-motivated alongside JAQUES who was pretty much overshadowed by both ROBERT and SEBASTIAN this season...

I feel a great season is awaiting us with the BEST EVER leaving and based on these thoughts FERNANDO looks like being in pole position to run away with the 2007 WDC, especially as he will be a clear No.1 at his team...

Julian,

good that you admit to be usually wrong..

Re.MICHAEL - well, just compare the buzz around his retirement with that of ALAIN, NIGEL, NELSON, DAMON and more recently JAQUES....fetch the difference?? Millions of people are concerned, and I believe the errors he made have not necessarily taken away much of his popularity, maybe they rather added to it - showing he was still just a human being, a genius in a race car but not unfallable, like everybody of us is fallable. Otherwise he would have come close to a racing robot...

Re.FERNANDO and MCLAREN blowing it next year, well if you just would put your money where your mouth is I would love to have a bet with you... :D

Re.REDBULL coming 3rd, beating RENAULT, MCLAREN, HONDA, TOYOTA, WILLIAMS - all of whom have an edge at the moment? Suppose you expect a tad too much of NEWEY... or is it from MARK

On the issue of Michael, I don't see millions being concerned. I think millions will be happy to see him go.

As for the buzz, let me put it this way, if a real sportsman has acheived those records acheived by Michael, there would be a real buzz.

Only time will tell of course but perhaps we could dig this thread out in a year's time and see if people are reminising those days of Michael or have forgotten about him and enjoying the Alonso-Kovalainen- Raikkonen fight :D :D

As for predicting what will happen next year, well Alonso will win the title, the closest will be Kovalainen with Raikkonen and Massa not far behind.
The constructors will be closer and it will depend who will partner Alonso. But again it will be a 3 way between McLaren, Ferrari and Renault.

I don't think Honda and Toyota will be able to match those 3, while all the customer engine teams will be outside the top 5.

Oh and how about this for a prediction (and to bring this back on topic :D ) Michael will return in 2008 but will be blown away and retires for good 5 races into the season.

Alonso has described Michael Schumacher as "the most unsporting driver with the largest number of sanctions in the history of Formula One"

That is very true but I wonder if Alonso should be making such statements at this stage. He doesn't really need any more 'made up' penalties in the final 3 races. I suppose they are not racing in Italy again but I think it may be even more risky in China or Brazil

But then why not, why should he stay quiet and not say what he feels. Actually thinking about it, I think it is good that he said this. It shows he says what he thinks and that reminds me of another cool driver :D
