How this compares to Schuey et al,I have no idea.
Perhaps Ed could inform us.
Julian,

Ferrari didn't publish the times set by Rossi when he tested for them this year. The rumour is that in April his best time was a 59.5 and his best time in August was a 59.2 but as I said this isn't official.

The fastest time this year set at Fiorano was a 57.146 set by Michael Schumacher.

But we all know how misleading these times can be. We don't know fuel loads, track conditions, weather, etc ....
In any case, the fact that he tested again and Ferrari want him to test regularly means that they believe he has potential.

yes, his quote was published in F1i, and the article further stated that Ferrari were not happy that he had made his time public.
One has to assume he waas telling the truth. If so, he is no slouch, and I guess Ferrari would want to keep that quiet.
I would imagine that if he ever does drive for Ferrari, he would bring a major amount of sponsor money on board.

The actual article that is quoted by many sites appeared in the Guardian titled "Ferrari is the ultimate challenge for me".

On his feelings on the first day of testing for Ferrari Rossi says "On my bike I feel free. I have a relationship with the bike. But a formula one car feels like a cage where you cannot move. It is not natural. So I spin the Ferrari twice in my first three laps. Then I stall it. Then one engineer, he say, 'Look, to work, this car has to be driven fast. Understand?' But everything is strange"

But as the day progresses "but I go out again late that afternoon. It is after five and the track is getting dark. I like this. When I am not racing I am light and sunny. But on the track I am dark and aggressive. The Ferrari and me go faster and faster. Then comes my last lap - 59.1 seconds. A lot of people lost their money"

It is an interesting read!

Valentino Rossi has completed a 3 day test for Ferrari at Fiorano (1 day) and Mugello (2 days). Ferrari haven't released times from the test.

This is the 3rd test for Rossi in a Ferrari this year but the first time at Mugello where Rossi has raced on bikes before. Rossi said
Obviously, I already knew the track, even if it is very different sitting in the cockpit from being on a bike. I was able to do around six hundred kilometres, increasing my understanding of the handling of the car on a very different track to Fiorano.
I have to say it was a great experience and I want to thank Ferrari and all the engineers and mechanics who were with me on these fantastic days for once again giving me this opportunity

Apparently Fernando Alonso has come out & said Rossi's testing times in an F1 car are average. Rossi has challenge FA to a duel. They are to each ride/drive a motogp bike, rally car & F1 car & see who comes out on top.

I know where I want my money.

The Latest developement:

If Rossi makes his transition to F1, it will not be with Ferrari, But rather with Red Bull Racing.....

The Say that because of Ferrari's link to RBR by supplying engines, Michael probably extending his contract with Ferrari, and Raikkonen supposedly signed up for Ferrari, That Rossi would be better suited to join F1 with RBR, as it is a more relaxed atmosphere, and Ferrari can watch his performances over the first year.....

DC/Rossi :?:

Valentino Rossi:
No F1, at least for the moment, I am staying where I still have much motivation.
I retain that my work in the motorcycling is not finished. I have still much motivation and I will continue in the MotoGP still for a little while.
I wish to reach the objective that has been given by Ferrari and that objective coincides with the mine - to win the world title!
