Barkeep, one large iced tea. Did you read Wednesday's USA Today Sports section? There was a brief mention about an Australian Rules Football player.....unless the story was flat-out wrong, it said that the player in question, Brett Backwell, planned to have his left ring finger amputated in hopes of improving his play. Apparently, he broke the finger three years ago and while doctors told him they could fuse the bones together or do surgery on them, he declined....here's his explanation.....
"To chop off a finger, that's a bit drastic," he said in an interview with the Australian Boradcasting Company. "But I love my footy(football), and love playing sport, and if that's going to help me succeed at this level then it's something you've just got to do."
After I read it, the first thing I thought was....
If there's a comp for most bizarre sports news story of 2005, then this one gets my vote.

Itis a bit of an exaggeration Mfer. An Australian who plays rugby league, hurt his finger badly, before the finals last year. He asked the doctors which would heal faster, an amputation, or pinning it. The doctors laughed and thats as far as it went.

I figured as much...I was right, it did sound a bit bizarre, but here's a more bizarre thought, julian--would it have actually helped him become a better football player, or not?

If its the Bronco player Im thinking of, he was already one of the best. What he was concerned about was the angle of the finger from a previous break and how it kept snagging. If they were not able to straighten it with this break, it possibly would have made him a better player, to have it chopped.mlittle wrote:I figured as much...I was right, it did sound a bit bizarre, but here's a more bizarre thought, julian--would it have actually helped him become a better football player, or not?
