Re: The 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Thread
Wow! What a qualifying session. The weather had such a huge impact on it with multiple red flags, including 3 in Q3.
That and the lack of pace from Mercedes and the AlphaTauri duo were the biggest surprises.
Alex Albon started the run of red flags when component failure in the right rear caused debris to be dumped all over the track in the second half of his lap in Q1. The Mercedes duo limped into Q2 by the skin of their teeth while the AlphaTauri pair didn't.
Q2 started with the threat of rain predicted for the early part of the session. The big guns all got their first hot laps in and Carlos Sainz, while on another fast lap, lost the rear of his Ferrari and ended in the barriers. The subsequent red flag and then the rain stopped any chance of anyone forcing their way into Q3 and no time to repair his Ferrari.
The final session began with a slowly drying but tricky track. The first red flag came when Kevin Magnussen clipped the white line on entry into turn 12. The flag was thrown as his Haas was in a dangerous position however he managed to extricate himself and return to the pits unaided and with no damage. Valtteri Bottas was next to bring out a red flag with his Alfa Romeo stopping on track around turn 16. There remained just over 3 minutes in the session which could permit, in reality, one out lap and one flying lap. Most of the combatants lined up at pit exit and, with a bit of gamesmanship, Max Verstappen ensured that each driver would only have the one opportunity to set a time. The only outlier was Lando Norris who remained in his pit until the nonsense had cleared the pit exit.
Unfortunately for Lando Norris, on his out lap, he also became a victim of the white line entering turn 12 and finished in the barriers thus bringing out the final red flag and ending the session for all.
