At least he's out of the ICU. First "better" news in a while... I am confident that he'll be okay.Julian Mayo wrote: I am deeply disturbed that he is still not alert

True and that is not the best but since he is no longer in ICU that has to be a good sign. It would be hard to know whether he will ever be back to "normal" but hopefully he will recover enough to enjoy his life even if he never gets behind the wheel of a race car again.Julian Mayo wrote:I am deeply disturbed that he is still not alertgkaytaz wrote:Great news! Update on da Matta' condition........
In case anyone's interested...........
According to both speedtv.com and autoracing1.com, Cristiano da Matta's condition has improved remarkably well over the past week or so; last week, they removed the trach-tube that da Matta had, and he said in Portuguese to his father, "That really hurts!". This week, according to ChampCar's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Chris Pinderski, da Matta has effectively(to use Pinderski's words), "rounded the corner" and is steadily recovering. He's able to walk, albeit a tad shaky; he converses in both English and Portuguese; he talks to his girlfriend regularly now and recognizes friends and family. Quoting Pinderski, when they asked him which team he drives for, "da Matta began talking with everyone about engineers and wings and so forth", meaning he's thinking in racing terms, regardless of whether he makes sense at times. They're hoping to transfer da Matta from Theda Clark Medical Center(Neenah, Wisc.) to a rehabilation center nearby and continue working with him there. Everyone's still cautious about his recovery, but he is recovering, and that's the key here; he is recovering.

I knew the guy would pull through. I simply refuse to lose a good man to such a trivial accident...

Having been front seat passenger in a car which hit a horse "head" on on my side, at the speed he was travelling hitting 300kg of deer is no trivial accident.gkaytaz wrote:Certainly very good news!Julian Mayo wrote:Walking and talking, the ability to recognize people all bode well.![]()

Umm, true. However what I mean by trivial is a tad different: Getting hit by a car or running into a wall is a risk that comes with the racing business. Yet when a deer runs onto the track or a bird flies into your face causing you to crash is a completely different kind of problem. It's trivial cuz it could have been prevented by simply putting a fence around the circuit. Wildlife and F1 racing do not go hand-in-hand (wildlife including bipedal idiots running onto the track during the race).Julian Mayo wrote:Having been front seat passenger in a car which hit a horse "head" on on my side, at the speed he was travelling hitting 300kg of deer is no trivial accident.gkaytaz wrote:Certainly very good news!Julian Mayo wrote:Walking and talking, the ability to recognize people all bode well.![]()

it is hard to fence in kangaroo, tho. Ask the V8Supercar driver who hit one at Mt Panorama while doing 180kmh.
