Congratulations to Alonso for his second WDC.
I was at the race and really enjoyed it... and the celebration party!

Comparing what Schumi, Senna and Prost had accomplished at the age that Alonso is today, 25 years, 2 months and 25 days, we found:

These are facts... he has plenty of time to break all the records... and he has also the skills to do it (I don?t know about the will)
He helped Renault to came out of nowhere and will help MacLaren to go up to the top

Yeah but the age of Hamilton & Kovalainen is about to dawn and poor OLD Alonso's time has run out. He knew he'd have to make hay while the sun shone.

If the McLaren is reliable (and there is a big question mark over that!!), next year will be even easier for Alonso as he gains more experience and confidence!

Kovalainen may be a threat as he has a full season of testing but Hamilton will take time. (Kovalainen is about the same age as OLD Alonso )
Assuming the cars are on a similar level, Kovalainen would have a chance in 2008 and Hamilton in 2009 (assuming he does drive next year, otherwise 2010).

(I don't think anyone has ever won the title on debut - except the first one of course )

McLaren's reliability will remain an issue I believe. Now Ferrari with Kimi on the helm is another question mark albeit slightly smaller. I agree that Kovalainen may have a shot at WDC later on but that won't happen before 2009 assuming that he's not of Senna caliber. Despite Snowy's faith in him Hamilton won't be up there until 2010 (earliest). I see Kimi as the favorite for 2007 WDC.

On Sunday Fernando Alonso went back to his hometown of Oviedo where more than 20,000 people filled the streets in celebration of his 2nd World Title.

Addressing the crowd he said:

For me, it is an honour to see the city like this, with the banners, with the support you give me, and everybody in blue and yellow. I want to thank you. You show your support at every race, at every Grand Prix, and I think I can say that I have the best supporters in the world. You see this in other sports, to have the fans chanting, but not in motorsport. Very few drivers can have this, and I am privileged to be one of them.

He then descirbed his season and how great it was to race in Spain in front of his home crowd:

it was a race where I felt different to normal? I gave everything and more in every corner because the people in the stands were supporting me from corner to corner

Then he talked about the latter part of the season when he felt the championship could be lost but was determined to fight back:

Two races from the end, I thought about the possibility of losing the championship, but then I realised there was still a long way to go ? and we had to keep our hope.
There was a lot of pressure, and a lot of anger inside me as well. There had been things we did not understand, that seemed unfair and against the sport, and we had to take victory to show that the sport always comes out on top in the end, and that the good guys do win

He then called on his fans to celebrate and enjoy this time:

All the people of Asturias, and all of Spain, are double world champions. We now need to enjoy these months.

On Monday he went to Viry (Renault F1 engine factory) to thank the Renault employees for the last time for winning the title.

Speaking to the 250 Renault employees (in French) he said:

Thank you, thank you. I want to say thank you to everybody for your hard work. We are all double world champions. We did it together, and it is perfect.
Thanks to you, I have had an amazing engine. The V10 last year and the V8 this year were fantastic. One failure in two years, this year in Monza, it is amazing -- and almost funny when you look back at it. I had a super engine, a great car, and I just tried to drive to the maximum. But we won these titles first of all at Viry and Enstone, thanks to your hard work. So thank you all!

I think perhaps Fernando is the least attractive F1 driver Would that mean the ugly guy wins again? They always have the most attractive girlfriends.

No actually David Coulthard is pretty ugly but probably some people think his cute too.

On the BBC website, Mark Webber said this on Alonso:

If Alonso can get a good car from McLaren I don't think anyone will touch him

He's double world champion when Michael was still around, which is a great feather in his cap and something which I know he's particularly rapt about.

He's the class in the field at the moment, there's no-one who can compete with him consistently.

Webber also reckons it will be a close fight between Alonso and Raikkonen. He also says that Kovalainen will be one of the finds of the season.
