Getting Live coverage of F1 (in Australia)

Hi Lloyd,

I flagged this to reply to it earlier but got distracted and you had to go through all the trials with hubcaps, etc ...

You can get live f1 coverage in Australia (at least you used to up until last season! - I am saying this as F1 contracts can change between seasons.)

Last year you could get F1 coverage on the following channels and satellites:

- T?l? Nouvelle Cal?donie (New Caledonia TV in French) - Intel 701 KU Band
(This used to be free to air (FTA) but since mid December it became encrypted. I do believe you can subscribe via LBF) - Race only

- Global TV (Indonesian channel) - Palapa C2 C Band
I believe this is FTA - Qualifying sometimes + Race

- Star Sports (Chinese/English) - Asia Sat 3 C Band
I believe this is encrypted and you need a subscription from Asia. Some say however that the Chinese feed is FTA while the English feed is encrypted (subscription) - Practice, Qualifying and Race.

These are the channels I know that you can pickup on the eastern coast in Australia.

Once the season starts, we'll know if any of this has changed and if any new channels become available.

C band requires the big dish (above 1.8 meter in diameter) while you can get KU band with the smaller dish (70 - 90 cm in diameter)

just ask the cable companies if they can give you the russian channel "Rent TV" the comments will be in russian, but, who cares?? that is bu!! s#$% any case!!

I would love to be able to watch the race live. It will give me the much needed 2 or so hours of extra sleep on race nights

Do you know how much this would cost roughly ?

Tad more info on satelite coverage of F1. Spoke to my brother in law yesterday, he is an electrician, said he has a friend who purchased a dish 1.8 mtr and receiver/decoder box to watch italian football. worked great but the dishes apparently are very good at attracting lightning strikes. He now uses his, (wait for it) as a clothes line.

Cost around Au$4000.
So I will have to rely on channel 10 or see if I can try my hand at disk renovation

It varies depending on the quality of the equipment and whether you get a professional installer or you do it yourself.
Components shouldn't cost more than $700 but to do it yourself you need to know a bit about satellite reception and dish alignment, etc ....

I would imagine this is cost including installation by a professional and it is still too high IMO.
This guy must be very unlucky to have the dish hit by lightning. Was the dish mounted on a roof top of a building or something!

Who are you referring to as a professional installer

It is something I enjoyed doing for just the one time (with the help of a friend). Getting the lock on the satellites was the most frustrating especially if you have a motor so you can pick up a few of them. And all that was on a small dish. The big ones have to be more difficult, naturally!

Perhaps I'll convince management to install one to be hooked to that Plasma in the Lounge

Yes I think $4000 sound like too much. But I believe he had the full shebang system and professionally installed. I have located a site that has answered most of my questions and yes its much cheaper than I had first thought. This is an "all you ever wanted to know about satelite TV" in simple form. Check it
