The official statement from BMW Sauber read:
No official word from Villeneuve on this fuelling speculation that Kubica may be taking over for the rest of the season - depending on how well he does in Hungary. The BMW Sauber F1 Team will take their place on the grid for the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest this coming weekend with a different driver line-up. After his accident at the German Grand Prix last weekend Canadian driver Jacques Villeneuve will not be racing. Test and reserve driver Robert Kubica will take his place. He will be the first Pole ever to contest a Formula One grand prix.
BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen said: ?Jacques has informed us that he is not ready to race after his Hockenheim accident. Robert has made an outstanding impression with the team so far, both in testing and on the Friday of the race weekends. Now we will see how he performs in a Formula One race. However, we have not yet made a decision on who will drive the car either in the remaining races of the season or next year.?
21-year-old Kubica is looking forward to the new challenge: ?I had prepared myself for a whole year without actually competing in any races, so I?m even happier to get this opportunity. And I?m proud that the BMW Sauber F1 Team has such confidence in me. I?m determined not to let them down.

If Jean Todt retires, there are going to be a lot of Queens Council making a lot of money, and a lot of driver movements. Alonso just could be the big loser. I would not like to see that........but it is quite possible. Webbo, and a couple of newbys could do welljacfan wrote:I hadn't thought of that. Though I have read that Jacques may go back to Americas and race there again.

Doubt it, jacfan. F1 Racing asked him that back in the Dec. 04' edition of their magazine and he didn't parse any words about NA open-wheel racing(if I remember correctly, he said that Tony George "ruined" the sport w/the split, and that ChampCar was nowhere near where CART used to be when he both the CART title and the Indy 500 back in 1995.....)jacfan wrote:I hadn't thought of that. Granted.....I honestly wouldn't mind seeing Jacques return to NA motorsports; don't think it's gonna' happen, but you never know these days.....

I can kinda see JV returning to NA and competing in the ALMS. I think that series, which IMHO is on an upswing, would suit his temperment better, but despite his Canadian citizenship, JV, for all intents and purpose is Swiss-French now and thus European. You may see him commentating with Marc Surer on TV1 or whatever the Swiss sport channel is.
