Who's the better driver.....Mark Webber or Will Power???

Post by mlittle » Mon Apr 09, 2007 10:24 am

Now, last year the question was asked......who's the better driver, Dan Wheldon or Jenson Button? This year's question is similar......

Who is the better driver.........Red Bull's Mark Webber in Formula 1 or Team Australia's Will Power in ChampCar?

After watching both races today(the Malaysian GP at 2:30 am US EDT.....    , and the ChampCar Vegas Grand Prix at 4 pm US EDT....   ), my answer to the question is.....without a doubt, Will Power(BTW, Power won the race in Vegas today...... :) :)    8)

Well done to Will Power and more Power to him :D

I can't answer the question as I haven't seen Will Power race but if he has won a race in ChampCar then he must be good!
I'm back and yes supporting Alonso "The Cute" in the Ferrari!

I saw the CCWS race in Las Vegas also (I was there). Will Power did drive a fine race with only one real minor mistake. I also thought that Paul Tracy failed to win the race more than Power took the race, but again, this was the first time ever I saw Will Power drive.

Let me point out that Sebastien Bourdais was slicing through the field like a hot knife through butter despite numerous flat tires which eventually put him into the wall. He no doubt would've won it without those problems...

Let me also point out that former F1 pilot Robert Doornbos came in second for Minardi USA in his maiden ChampCar start. I suspect Mark Webber would be right at the very top of ChampCar series if he were to cross the pond again.

F1 is the highest level of racing. If youre good enough you have to come and try in F1. NIGEL, ALEX, JUAN PABLO and SEBASTIAN are the best examples what happens if an F1 star(past or future) enters Champ Car...

Doesnt really work as well the other way around. I think the Champ Cars are much easier to drive with less precision necessary. No point in comparing DAN to JENSON or WILL to MARK. The F1 guys would drive circles around their CC/Indy counterparts, no matter if in F1 or in the US series...

Multi-part posting, greyhound......

~~Yes, F1 is the highest level of motorsports; however, until the geniuses at 16th & Georgetown decided to split the sport in NA, CART was about as good a racing series in the world other than F1. All four drivers you mentioned(Mansell, Zanardi, Montoya and Bourdais) came to NA and dominated while here[Mansell, having never raced on an oval before 1993, finished 3rd at Indy in the 500 and won four additional oval races at tracks he'd never been too, for instance; all four have won CART/ChampCar titles here[Mansell, 1993; Zanardi, 1997-1998; Montoya, 1999 and Bourdais, 2004-2006]
~~I'd disagree with you as to whether a ChampCar is easier to drive than an F1 car..........on an F1 car, you've got traction control(at least until next year) and other various driver assists; in the Panoz/Cosworth ChampCar, the driver, other than the 'boost' assist built into the engine(the Cosworth XFE-3 turbo engine has 750hp; the boost function adds 50-75 extra hp depending on the specific track), they've got only one driver assist....their right foot.
~~As to comparisons btwn. drivers........in a sense, it's merely a way to spark conversation and get differing opinions....I will say this, though; I'd love to see some of the current top drivers in F1(Alonso, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Massa, Hamilton, etc.) come over to Indy, for instance, and race in the 500, like some of the past greats(Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Denny Hulme, Jochen Rindt, etc.) in F1 used to.
~~As to whether F1 drivers could run circles around their NA motorsports counterparts, I don't know about that; I still remember, back in 1996 IIRC at Estoril, when a brash young F1 driver named Jacques Villeneuve made that very, very ballsy pass around M. Schumacher on the outside going onto the main straight there....Villeneuve IMO would've never tried that had it not been for his oval-track experiences in CART in 1994-1995.

JAQUES would be the exception to the rule, he was young, gifted, hungry and he got a supreme car. He did everything right.

JUAN PABLO also started his F1 racing career coming over from CC but he had F1 experience before.

ALEX was struggling in the poor WILLIAMS.

The traction control doesnt make an F1 car easy to drive, thats a myth and many F1 drivers have confirmed that it is not really decisive. Otherwise why would the best guys still reign supreme?

A Champcar must be easier to drive because it is heavier, more stable and generally doesnt ask for the same degree of precision. Plus I simply cant believe e.g.PAUL TRACY would be right there in F1.

If I had to go eleventy tenths for one hour to save someones life, it sure as hell would not be an F1 car..............Therapy is getting a tad tired...............Champcar is the only option 8)
