Sydney GP?

Post by rah » Wed Jun 27, 2007 9:35 am

I read on grandprix.com that our premier has been talking to Bernie about an F1 in Sydney. Is this just to blow smoke up Melbourne or is there a real chance. I guess if Morris is willing to pay for it it can be done. But where? a street race at homebush is my best guess.
Ok, Lewis may win the WDC in 07, but Sato will beat him in 08.

They're not the only ones who've mentioned it; autoracing1.com's "Rumors" page also mentioned it(should be towards the top of the rumors list).............doesn't Melbourne have the Australian GP under contract for a couple more years?

I would say that more than likely , Bernie is trying to pry more money from the Melbourne folks . Seems he's doing that to a lot of folks these days - Indy , Silverstone and anywhere else he thinks it might work .... 8)

I thought Melbourne had it for a couple more years but there have been rumours of other states, including Queensland, wanting it.

Melb has the contract until 2010. I think they are bidding for after that. QLD were rumoured a while ago, but I doubt they can do it without Gov support.

The rumour that I've heard is that they want a night street race in Sydney. This is to keep european TV viewers happy. Melbourne could loss it's GP earlier due to financial reasons.

Melbourne has been asked to have the GP at night but last thing I heard was that Steve Bracks was not inclined to have it at night.

If Bernie Moneystone wants to have it at night, chances are it will be a night-race :)

Geelong is now in the frame for a night race
So we have
Gold Coast (not the Indy track)
Sydney
Melbourne
Geelong.
Any bets on watching Hambone go around at Gularganbone?

Along the waterfront, around the statue thingo, up past the Ford Factory, over the hill and back down to the waterfront.
Fan access should make Silverstone look like paradise.
