McLaren Penalty

Post by Julian Mayo » Fri Sep 14, 2007 4:13 am

McLaren have been stripped of all their Constructors points for 2007, and have been fined a record amount.
They must also prove there is no "Ferrari Intellectual Property" in the 2008 car, before being allowed to enter.
IMHO, the last honest man in F1 has just been nailed to a cross, I will no longer take an interest in F1.
Thank You Mr Mosely, your personal Vendetta has destroyed F1.

I was one pushing for some form of penalty but I think this is a bit excessive.

10 WCC points & $5m would have been sufficient & sent the right message.

All WCC points & $100m is the biggest penalty ever handed down in motorsport. Next largest was $5m, even that would have been fair.
There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.......

Excessive? It's exorbitant! Also presents some sort of paradox: If the FIA really believes that the so-called stolen info benefited the car, then the drivers who have driven them must have benefited from that as well. Most probably the pilots had had no idea but they may have picked up some extra points because of an advantage due to that particular bit of information. How can one issue a penalty to be perfectly fair? In my opinion the FIA should have penalized McLaren by taking away, say 20 constructors pts at most and as Bundy pointed out perhaps a fine of 5 mil... But what we have now is simply ridiculous. Pity that the season ends this way...

what about honda in 2005?

Post by billou2k » Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:42 pm

The financial penalty seems huge to us but not that much to them. they ll get over it. Actually the fine is "just" 50 millions dollars "because McLaren doesn't have to forfeit any revenue it has earned this season."
Now what i dont understand is that the drivers that have been using a car that illegally benefited (and still does) from a competitor's technology are allowed to continue racing in that same car, and keep all the points they've gained from the beginning of the season.
Does that make sense?
I recall that Bar Honda was found out guilty of infringing unclear regulations about underweight in 2005. The team was stripped of all its points SO were the drivers who were also banned for the next 2 races...
Strangely here, Hamilton and Alonso have no penalty whatsoever: they keep all their points, and they go on racing with an illegally engineered car.
Does it sound consistent to anyone?

The FIA still don't have any evidence that there is Ferrari intellectual property on the car! They have imposed this fine on the basis that the drivers were discussing Ferrari data and knew it came from Nigel Stepney. They have been challenged by Ron to make their judgement stand up in a court of law. to which they replied nuts to you this isn't a court of law and any evidence can be circumstantial, uncorroborated or untrue because we are the FIA we are the F1 LAW and we are immensly pleased to be immensly richer this morning!

If Mc Laren via DeLaRosa and Alonso ( and others) had of been more up front to begin with they wouldn't have found themselves in this position now

:crush: Deception is one thing but covering your tracks afterwards makes it worse
I cant believe how Ferrari are being made out to be the ones at fault.

If the boot was on the other foot the penalty imposed would be seen be most on this site to be not enough.(e.g Ferrari in this position)

Hardly fair I say.

Probably with some but I think the penalty was ridiculous and would even if it were the other way around.
