Lewis Hamilton is an "unworthy" World Champion

Post by RE30B#16 » Mon Sep 21, 2009 9:48 pm

I just read this on NewsOnF1:
Sep.20 (GMM) Lewis Hamilton has hit back at claims he is not a worthy reigning world champion because of the 'crash-gate' revelations.

Felipe Massa was almost level-pegging on points with the 24-year-old Briton for the 2008 crown until Singapore, when the safety car triggered by Nelson Piquet's faked crash - and then Ferrari's famously botched pitstop - ruined the Ferrari driver's race.

Massa, who had dominantly won pole for the night race and was pulling away from Hamilton in the opening stint until the Piquet crash, ultimately lost the drivers' crown by a single point.

It has therefore been claimed that, had Renault not cheated, Massa would now be world champion.

But Hamilton told Britain's News of the World newspaper: "I am a worthy world champion. I have got the number one on my car and I deserved it."

How in the heck can Lewis Hamilton be considered an "unworthy champion" because of Renault's "crash-gate"? Hamilton obviously could not have had anything to do with the fake Renault crash, and it is dumb luck that Felipe Massa did not end up scoring more points as a result. Massa and Ferrari had their own screw ups in the race which could have equally caused Massa to miss out on more points.

Nevertheless, Lewis Hamilton is definitely a "worthy" World Champion. Statements like these seem to come from crap slingers and haters, not news reporters. Hamilton is one of the top three drivers in the sport right now and will certainly win multiple WDCs.

What do you think?

Whenever there is a close finish to the championship, people will say had this happened the result would have been different. Now on this particular occasion, whilst it is true that Massa's stop was caused by the safety car condition, he would have stopped a few laps later anyway and the same problem could have occured. So I think there is no substance to this claim.

In my view what lost Massa the championship was his engine failure in Hungary whilst in the lead 3 laps from the end!
But that is racing!
