Where should the 2007 United States Grand Prix be held?

Post by mlittle » Sat Apr 01, 2006 12:00 pm

Unless I'm mistaken, there was a news report earlier this month in which Bernie Ecclestone hinted that, in 2007, the USGP, currently held on the road course w/in the hallowed grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, might be held instead in Las Vegas. So my question to the F1 community, is this.......if the 2007 USGP isn't held at IMS, where should it be held?

My vote......Road America. The 4.046-mile road course in central Wisconsin(about 60-75 minutes drive west of Milwaukee, Wisc.), often referred to as "America's Spa"(in reference to Spa-Francorchamps) would be IMHO the best place to hold the USGP. It's a natural-terrain road course that hasn't been ruined by chicanes or other road-course ruining features......it has a good combination of fast corners, slow turns and long straights, and it has great sightlines throughout the facility, regardless of where you're parked during a race weekend.

So, I ask.......if the 2007 United States Grand Prix isn't to be held at IMS....where should it be held?

I agree with you mlittle, Road America would be the best track.

I wouldn't be sorry to see Indianapolis get the chop and that not just because of the problems of last year. I just don't like it as a track.

Too true......for some reason, I am just not a fan of the infield section......

There are a few tracks that I really like, although I dont think they are F1 worthy...tracks like Summit Point Raceway(West Virginia) and the road course at the daytona international speedway..........just a thought........

Definitely Road America.

Mid-Ohio is another candidate.

Why not return to Watkins Glen, Detroit or Long Beach?

Long Beach had a cool atmosphere. It still does with ChampCar [or whatever CART is called these days]. The IRL has been trying to steal it.

Another option would be to build a world class road course in or near Las Vegas. The grands prix there were successful, but the drivers complained about the uninteresting makeshift tracks. Vegas has the hotel space, the flights, the imagination. It really is the perfect place for a Formula 1 race in the USA.

RE, the IRL tried to steal Long Beach last year from ChampCar(CART's successor series) when Dover Mtrspts/. decided to sell the rights to the event.....and Kalkhoven and Forsythe slammed the door shut on George and Co., buying the rights to the event and using CC's resources to promote the event.

If Road America's not available.......there are 2 alternate choices. First would be Laguna Seca(just imagine the looks on Schuey, Alonso and Co.'s faces when they're approaching the Corkscrew.....  ) and the second choice IMHO would be the long course at Sebring(the one used for the annual 12 hrs. race).

I would have suggested Laguna Seca, but I believe the FIA would want to butcher up the corkscrew!

What about New York? I think I've driven that on the PS2 on GT4...with maybe an elevated section going out to Ellis island and The statue of Liberty as a hairpin bend?
